Counter Attack Chapter 186

The weather is getting colder each day, Wu needs to manually heat up his house, so his house is never as warm as his apartment. He felt uncomfortable after blowing under the air-conditioner for so long,  but if he uses an electrical heater he was worried that his mother would get electrocuted, so now he could only start a fire in the fireplace when he reaches home, he would also go to sleep earlier so he could avoid suffering in the horrible winter nights. 

Tonight, Wu couldn't sleep.

His bed was warm enough, his back was even sweating, but his limbs were freaking cold, he just can't seem to warm them up.

He reached his hands under his mother's blanket, her hands were perfectly warm and toasted, so he grabbed her hands trying to warm up his hands, after a while, he stretched out his legs as well, in the end, his entire body is under his mother's blanket.

Wu's mother was holding onto Wu's hands, she called out unconsciously.

'Da Chi.' 

Wu's body froze, he stared right at his mother's face.

'Mom, are you awake?'

She didn't reply.

Wu hugged her to sleep for a while, he suddenly found out that her body isn't just warm, it felt a little too hot as well. Wu placed his palm on her forehead and he was taken aback by the temperature.

'Mom, mom...'

He called her several times but she didn't respond to any of it.

Wu quickly went down the bed and changed his outfit, he then carried his mother into the car and to the hospital.

He has been waiting outside the emergency room for an hour already, Wu has planned out everything in his mind, it felt like there was a huge boulder weighing down in his heart, he can't even cry it out. He only wore a shirt and his suit pants out, the hand that was holding onto a lighter was trembling uncontrollably, he finally managed to lit up his cigarette after a while.

The doctor walked out and told Wu, 'The patient has made it through, but she would need to stay in the hospital for observation.'

Wu's hanging heart finally was at ease.

The next day, Wu's mother has been moved to a normal ward, even though she isn't as mobile as she was at home, at least she doesn't need to suffer from the cold, plus there would be nurses around her all the time, Wu wasn't as worried when he goes to work.

At noon, Wu was feeding his mother some birds' nest porridge.

She only had two mouthfuls before calling out the name again.

'Da Chi.'

Wu's heart clenched, asked, 'You still remember who is Chi?'

She pointed at the bowl in his hands, shaking her head.

In her head, she didn't have a complete image of Chi left, because Chi hasn't been visiting her for the past month, but she still remembered the tonics that Chi gave, she remembered that she didn't like the taste of it.

In the evening, Wu's eldest sister and her husband have come to the hospital, they even brought their daughter who was currently studying in university along.

'Brother, we three will look after mom tonight, you can go back and have some rest.'

Wu said, 'It's fine, I'll keep an eye on mom, don't you guys have work tomorrow?"

'It's Saturday tomorrow, we both don't have to work tomorrow, our daughter is also currently having a break.'

Wu looked at the two only beds in the ward, he then finally agreed to it unwillingly.

The room he had in the office was too big, Wu didn't want to go back there so he went back to the clinic.

It was already 11 at night, the chilling wind was blowing, the basketball court on the other side was empty, all that was left was the uninviting lights from the street lamps. Wu grabbed a basketball and went onto the court alone. He was jumping all over the court, a simple and light dunk, he got both his hands on the hoop.

'1, 2, 3, 4...'

He kept counting on and on, but Wu was still hanging on the hoop, there wouldn't be a broad shoulder catching him from the ground anymore, there wouldn't be a neck that he could ride on anymore.

"Hey, look over here, why are my arms so muscular? Why are they so strong? Hey, because I ate the legendary muscle pills. Hey, look at these pills, a packet for ten dollars, eat it every day, every month, every year, you will...I forgot the rest of it."

"I know."

"You know it? You've heard it before too? What's the rest of the sentence?"

"Grow two big and heavy balls."

"I miss my dad."

"Don't worry, you still have your godfather."

"What the hell, since when I'm your son?"

"Jealous is my son, you're its brother if you're not my son who else will be?"

"Do you believe I will poke a hole on your neck with my dick?"

"Don't need to, you just use your two balls, you can make a crater with one of those."

Wu picked up the ball and dragged his sad ass towards the clinic, right when he just arrived at the entrance, he suddenly felt that his foot was heavier, he looked down and was surprised.

Jealous was wrapping itself around his leg, its eyes were shut, it looked very tired and exhausted.

When Chi said that they will never meet, Wu was so good at holding his tears back, but when Jealous came back to him, he noticed that it was covered in snow, his tears were suddenly flowing out.

'Where did you come from?' Wu asked.

Jealous couldn't reply him, it was only slithering up his leg.

Normally Jealous' body was already cold, now it felt like it was freezing, Wu's legs were trembling at the touch of it. He quickly pulled Jealous out of his pants and wrapped a towel around it. 

Snakes have hibernation periods, Wu was thinking of whether to make a hibernation spot for Jealous, or to send him back immediately.

After a while, there was the sound of a car stopping at the entrance, Wu looked up and saw Lian standing at the door.

'Did Jealous come to you?'

Wu nodded, 'It just came, are you bringing him back now?'

Lian shook his head, 'It will only become a burden if it goes back, you can keep it, let it hibernate at your place.'

'Did you purposely let it out?' Wu asked.

Wu replied, 'No, I just noticed that it was missing so I came out to search for it.'

Wu was puzzled, 'Isn't it always sticking around Shuo?'

'Snakes have souls as well, it sees you guys as its family, but as for Shuo, he was just like any other snakes, he's just a friend. He has been around Shuo all the time because it feels fresh and neat, it can play around him for a few days, but it doesn't last long around Shuo. It was already sick of the environment at home, it was hiding all day long so I reckon it will escape from the house someday.'

Wu realized, every time when he converses with Lian, he felt better inside.

'Is there any present?' Wu reached out his hand.

Lian came in empty-handed just now, not sure when and how he managed to come up with a popsicle.

Wu was utterly shocked, 'Oh my god, do they still sell these treats? I used to eat these when I was little.'

He then grabbed it over and appreciated it in his hands.

Then he took a bite out of it, 'Ha! It's sweet!'

Such a huge popsicle, Wu felt embarrassed to eat it all alone, Wu then broke it into halves and gave Lian the longer one.

Lian refused, 'I don't want it, you can have it.'

Wu was glad, 'I was just waiting for you to say this.'

Lian looked at Wu quietly.

You really are smarter than Shuo.

Before leaving, Lian brought out a huge box of popsicle from the car and gave it to Wu.

'Bring these to your mother, she will be very pleased.'

After saying that, he then left.

The next day, Wu brought the popsicles to the hospital, just as Lian said, Wu's mother was so delighted when she saw this sweet, she was happier to see anything else.

Now in Wu's mother's head, the image residing in her memory was all from a few years back, she has completely reverted into being a child again, she never asked if Wu is getting a wife or not, she never asked is Wu has enough money to buy a house, she only knew how to smile when there was a popsicle in her hands, she would show off to anyone that she saw.

Wu was also in a great mood, so he decided to treat Lian a meal.

The two were eating out in a restaurant near the hospital.

They were chatting away while eating, Wu kept on praising Lian's brilliance.

'I think you're really something else, you said that if I dressed up as my dad my mom would be very happy, she really did; you said my mom would like the popsicles, she really loved them.'

Lian just simply nodded without any expression.

Wu probed, 'Such a man like you, do you have any girlfriend?'

'No one wants a boyfriend like me.'

'Why?' Wu was confused.

Lian replied, 'My job requires high confidentiality, I would go on missing for days, no one likes a boyfriend who goes missing every other day.'

Wu utterly despised the thoughts of those fools.

'If there's a little mystery, there would be more fun in life, the relationship wouldn't then go bland. I see you know a lot of skills and tricks, you can do magic as well, plus you're quite clever, you can think of anything...'

He quietly listened to Wu, then he spoke.

'I have someone in mind already.'

Wu's eyes bulged, 'Who?'

'If I were to say it's you, do you believe it?'

Even though Wu doesn't buy it, his heart was still thumping insanely.

Lian didn't say anymore, Wu didn't continue asking as well, the two were just digging into their food, eventually, Wu already had 2 full bowls of noodles.

'Waiter, can I get another bowl please,' Wu said.

Lian looked and him and asked, 'You eat so much?'

Wu said, 'I can eat three bowls usually.'

Lian kept quiet.

After the noodles were served, Wu was slurping them in happily, not sure if he was thinking of the smiley face of his mother, or he thought about the confession from Lian just now, he has a great appetite now.

But when he was down to half of the bowl, Wu suddenly stopped.

Lian asked, 'Why did you suddenly stop?'

Suddenly, a despairing feeling rose to his throat, Wu couldn't swallow his food.

'Did you eat something wrong?' Lian asked.

Wu shook his head.

Lian didn't continue asking his questions, he continued eating his food.

Wu suddenly realized that every word that Lian said was very true and real.

At this very moment, no matter how many popsicles he ate they couldn't get rid of this horrible feeling in his stomach, no matter how much skills he had they couldn't entertain him anymore, no matter how many surprises he had they all seem boring to him...

Some people are just suitable to be admired, he will only appear in your dreams when you're at your happiest, making you overfilling with bliss. But when part of your heart has been dug empty, or entirely, all those so-called surprises and heart-throbbing moments aren't enough to fill that void in your heart.

Because he is imperfect, that's why you can grab onto a corner of his heart and keep it in your palms.

Understanding is more important than intelligence.

What he needs, is the two words that someone asks when he was left with half a bowl of noodles.

"Something wrong?"

Wu continued eating, stuffing the rest of the noodles down.

After having the meal, Lian told Wu, 'I will be leaving any time soon, I will bring Shuo with me.'

Wu was feeling dispirited all of a sudden.

'Will you return to visit me?'

'I will.'

Before starting his car, Lian took another look at Wu through the window.

'You're stronger than Shuo, the security you need can only be given by Chi, and the security that Shuo needs, it can only be me.'
