The next afternoon, Wu went to the supermart, 'generously' spent on a ton of food and went to department stores to buy some clothes for his mother, he returned home with bags of stuff.
Wu's mother discharged the moment her condition got better, she didn't want to stay in the hospital; one, she was bored, second of all, she was worried that her children found out about her condition. So she refused to go to the hospital unless she was feeling really unwell, the doctor was being transported every day to her house to check on Wu's mother.
Wu said once he stepped into the house, 'Mom, why did you lose weight again?'
'Diabetic patients are always skinny when it comes to my age.'
'But you weren't this skinny back then?' Wu's heartaches, 'Did you skip your meals? Don't listen to the doctors, you can eat if you want, don't compromise your nutrition because of your diet.'
She smiled warmly, 'Who cares about nutrition at my age? As long as I'm not starving.'
'That's not true, the older you get the more you should take nutritious food.'
Wu took everything in while he was talking, he opened the fridge and wanted to the food in, then he realized the fridge was totally stocked. He just bought a new huge double door fridge, that's because he couldn't seem to fit everything in. Who knows, now after changing a new fridge, the fridge is always filled with food.
And he also found out there are a few expensive tonics like Cordyceps and birds' nest.
'Mom, who bought all these?'
She replied, 'Da Chi! The food there, half of it were all from Chi.'
'When did he come?' Wu asked.
'Chi always come, he came a few days ago too, he said he changed his job and he has nothing much to do, so he always comes here spend time with me.' Afraid that Wu will have wild thoughts, so she quickly added, 'Chi said he likes the food I prepared, he always have dinner before leaving.'
Wu kept quiet with a gloomy face.
Wu's mother noticed that Wu was staring intently at the tonics, she complained, 'These tonics are not really good, Chi always reminded me to add some of that when I prepare soups, but I don't really like the taste of it. If it wasn't a gift from Chi, I would've thrown them away already.'
'Don't throw them away!' Wu's eyes bulged, 'These are premium ingredients, it costs over 10 thousand per pound.'
When she heard this she almost fainted, 'What did you say?'
Wu quickly assured her, 'Nothing, don't be so anxious, Chi's uncle sells these so it's free, it's free...' He slowly sat her down.
Even so, Wu's mother still grumbled, 'But that must be some premium goods as well, Chi never buys second-grade things. If I say, you have Chi as a friend is really the best thing that's ever happened in your life, it's better than you marrying a wife.'
Wu scorned: Just because of him I didn't have the chance to get a wife, that's why he's so good.
The two went back to her bedroom, Wu took out the clothes he bought for his mother, 'Now it's getting cold, I bought you some thicker clothes, I got them in your usual size, now it would look bigger if you wear it?'
Wu took it out and measured it briefly.
Wu's mother hit him on his hand, 'This boy, why did you spend money again? I didn't even bear to wear the thermal wear you bought for me last year.'
Wu then suddenly recalled, that was bought by Chi, along with the set that he was wearing now. This felt as if it has just happened yesterday, but one year has passed, he actually got together with Chi for a year already. Time flies...
As he was blanking out, Wu's mother pinched him.
Wu was hissing in pain, 'Mom, what are you doing?'
'Why did you spend on these unnecessary things?' Wu frowned, 'I didn't buy you a bouquet of flowers or a ring, these are practical stuff, why do you keep caring about that money? I tell you, I got a raise again, the leader said he feels I have the potential, my bonus is double the amount I got last year!'
After hearing this, Wu's mother brightened up, 'Again? Oh my, look at my son! Wait a while, I'll go prepare some good food.' After saying this, she happily trotted out to the kitchen.
After two weeks, Wu suddenly noticed that the kitchen was a lot cleaner. The walls were covered with cement, but now it was lined with white tiles. Although the stove is still the old one, there's a new cement pit that is used to hold wood, so there wouldn't be wood shaving all around the place. It's a small change but it's really practical.
Of course, Wu is well aware of who did this, he even thought about these kinds of stuff.
'You can go watch TV, I can manage my own,' Wu's mother's hands were trembling from carrying the basin of water, but she suppressed it and tried to chase Wu away.
Wu didn't leave, 'No worries, let me help you, I can cook a little now,' he rolled up his sleeves as he was saying.
Wu's mother pressed on his arms, she said firmly, 'Ever since you were born, did I ever let you do chores? No matter how badly we are doing, I never let my precious son do anything! Your pair of hands are meant to write, now go out.' Wu has heard this a lot of times now.
'I haven't studied for a long time, why do I need to write?' Wu refused to go.
But she was more stubborn than him, 'Your hands can't be used to do such chores, they need to earn a lot of money, go go go... Go out now or I will hit you.'
'This woman, you have a bad temper,' After Wu left the kitchen for a while, Wu's mother took out her phone and dialled the doctor's number.
'You don't need to send me dinner tonight, I will make something for myself at home.'
Doctor said, 'Then you still need to report to Chi, if not we would be responsible for anything that happened to you.'
'Yes yes, I know.' Wu's mother clumsily hung up the call, then she placed it into her apron and never touched it since.
Actually, for this period of time, there are people who took care of her meals, the doctor will send three meals over to her every day, this minimizes her work and also her diet can be taken care of and monitored. But she didn't want Wu to know about these, even though it has taken a toll on her hands after kneading out the dough, but she doesn't feel any fatigue, she even feels great inside, she felt even better than having a painkiller. My son has blossomed, he is doing so well.
When they are having their meal, Wu's mother was afraid that her son might notice anything, plus her mood is really good so she ate more than she used to. In the end, she was suffering from indigestion, she was having constant stomach pains until the night. Wu was sleeping so well beside his mother. Whenever she felt uncomfortable, she would turn her head and look at her son, after staring at her precious son for a while she felt better.
Wu woke up in the middle of the night to go to the washroom, when he came back he noticed his mother has curled up into a ball, her expression isn't good as well. He reached out to her face and he felt her face was covered with sweat.
'Mom, what's wrong?' Wu's heart tensed.
Wu's mother waved her hand, 'Nothing, I just dreamt about your father, I dreamt that he was growing cucumber in our yard. His body was as strong as always, just like when he was in his younger years, I was too happy so I woke up.'
Wu then felt relief, he crawled back to his spot, his round eyes were staring at the ceiling, 'I miss my father too.'
She said, 'I really want to meet him soon.'
'What are you saying?' Wu frowned, 'Are you cursing yourself?'
'I stay at home alone every day, I was really bored, there's no one I could talk to.'
Wu felt something pulled on his heartstrings, 'Mom, I'll buy a huge house, then we will move in together? Here is really far from my office, it's too troublesome to travel back and forth.'
'What nonsense are you talking about?' Wu's mother grabbed his hand, 'Don't think that your pay has raised you could start spending it! Save it first, wait till you have enough money. Even if you did buy it now, I wouldn't move in with you. I don't beat to leave this yard, to leave your dad. No matter how torn down it is we have lived here for 50 over years, I would even die in here.'
Wu knew he couldn't change her mind, so he shut his mouth up.
'I'm just waiting for the day when my son marries a lady, just like the girl in that picture, what is she called again?' She couldn't remember no matter how hard she tries, she always mentions her name, but now she has totally wiped that out of her mind.
Wu simply replied, 'Mom, I'll marry a girl that's much prettier than her.'
After hearing this, her pain has reduced significantly, 'That's good to hear.'
Wu added, 'I will buy a big house, you will move in there, don't reject me again, you will have to stay there no matter what. If not who else will take care of your grandson? Don't forget, you still have a grandson, a chubby one, he will feel like soft tofu in your arms...' As he was imagining, by the time Wu turned his head over, his mother has already fell asleep.
