Scarlet Rose [ABO] – What Happens When the Villain Dies at the Beginning? (40)
The Zerg invasion was finally thwarted with the death of the Intellinsect. The Zerg lost many members and fled back to their planet. It would take a long time for them to recover.
The Empire would have a long period of peace.
Although the Empire won, it was a victory at the cost of tens of thousands of soldiers as well as countless weapons and ammunition.
Of course, their final victory was in large part due to one person's sacrifice.
It was because he stood up at the critical moment and died with the Intellinsect that caused the state of the battle to turn.
A month later, the Emperor held a memorial for the soldiers who died fighting.
Eight soldiers in full uniform carried a coffin, which was covered by the flag of the Empire. They marched at the front of the parade.
Citizens stood on the sides of the streets to send the soldiers off. They had roses in their hands as they watched the last journey of the hero who saved them.
A knight who broke through the darkness to bring light was born and buried here.
That was what the young Emperor had written on the hero's tomb.
Not long ago, the Emperor announced the abolition of all laws that were discriminatory against Omegas.
He added “Omegas are allowed to partake in politics and the military” into the legislature, formed the Omega Protection Association, and severely punished all acts that were considered harmful to Omegas.
Although these new policies would impact the interests of some of the aristocrats, no one dared to come out and say so.
Because without that Omega's sacrifice, they would have long become a feast for the Zerg.
Moreover, Payne had complete support from the military, so none of the ministers dared say anything.
After the memorial, Payne returned to the palace.
After experiencing such a battle, the young Emperor not only garnered a lot of support, his entire demeanor changed.
He became more mature and steady, not showing his emotions. Even though his lover died, he didn't show any large emotions.
It was an appropriate appearance for a ruler to have.
The Emperor immediately went to his hall when he got back.
In front of his hall, there was a large rose garden with many different types of roses.
Every midnight, when he opened the window, he could not only smell the intoxicating scent of flowers, he could also hear birdsong.
But it was not midnight and the window was not open.
In front of a French window, there stood a person in a black cloak. His face was bare.
His reflection on the window was identical to the person in the coffin from the memorial just now.
Payne quietly approached him and hugged him from behind, kissing the side of his ear. “I thought you would go to the memorial.”
Blood Owl smiled at himself in the mirror. “It would feel too strange to attend my own funeral. And plus, it'll be unlucky.”
“I've already done everything I told you.” Payne stopped pretending to be kingly and showed some childish grievances on his face, “When are you going to fulfill what you promised me?”
“Are you sure you want the leader of the underground forces to be your queen?” Blood Owl turned around, pointing at Payne's chest as he smiled, “Aren't you scared that your ministers will know and unite to overthrow you?”
“Nope.” Payne frowned indifferently. “They won't dare do anything to me. Scarlet Rose also did a lot in the battle against the Zerg. As long as your subordinates are willing to submit to the government, I can give all of them decent positions.”
Blood Owl shook his head in disgust, “No need. Thank you for your good intentions, but they're used to being free and won't like being bound by so many rules. Everyone should be responsible for the prosperity of the country. Since they live on this planet, they can't just watch their home be destroyed.”
“What about you? Do you also want freedom and don't want to be by my side?” Payne furrowed his eyebrows in sadness, acting like a husband being abandoned by his wife.
“No one doesn't like freedom, and no one would be willing to be a nightingale raised in a cage.” Blood Owl stroked Payne's face, his gaze becoming more gentle, “And the person you love is an eagle, not a nightingale, right? Why would you force him to be with you all the time? It's enough as long as you know that you're in my heart. I'll visit often.”
“Then when did I first appear in your heart?” Payne seemed to have been convinced and his eyes sparkled with joy.
Blood Owl kept him guessing, “Longer than you think.”
Payne blinked, “Can it be longer than the first time we met? Maybe when we were in school?” He thought about their first meeting and smiled sweetly. “Love at first sight?”
Blood Owl shook his head. “No, not love at first sight. It was longer than that. Maybe from a previous life.”
Payne knew that he was deliberately humoring him, but what could he be unsatisfied with upon hearing such romantic things from him?
“I also love you. No matter if it's our previous life, or this life, or next life, or the life after that, I'll always love you.”
Blood Owl put his hand on Payne's shoulder, where he had left a bite mark, and slightly smiled, “Me too.”
They kissed in front of the window. Through the window, there were a bunch of vibrant, blossoming red roses, just like their passionate love.
The ending of a scene did not mean that the entire story was over.
The temporary departure only laid the ground for the next meeting.
