‘If you sincerely beg for forgiveness at least you have a chance to be with Jiao Mai again,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘She won’t forgive me because I wouldn’t forgive me if I’m her,’ Du Lei Xin said.

Du Lei Xin drank another glass of wine.

‘Big brother, I’ve lost her,’ Du Lei Xin said.

‘Lei Xin, don’t be like this,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘Jiao Mai actually has a soft heart. She’ll forgive you.’

‘She won’t forgive me,’ Du Lei Xin said. ‘What woman would forgive a man if she saw him in bed with another woman, and lost her baby as well?’

‘Go and beg her for forgiveness,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘You won’t know until you try.’

‘Big brother, I promise you I didn’t sleep with the hostess,’ Du Lei Xin said. ‘If I explain the truth to Jiao Mai, do you think she’ll forgive me?’

‘Lei Xin, what you said before, is it true?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘Yes,’ Du Lei Xin. ‘My body has no interest in any woman except Jiao Mai since we became lovers. Last night I drank, and slept on my bed the moment I got home. I didn’t sleep with the hostess.’

Gu Jiao Wu believed Du Lei Xin loved Gu Jiao Mai so Du Lei Xin wouldn’t be unfaithful to Gu Jiao Mai. The problem was he didn’t know if Gu Jiao Mai would believe Du Lei Xin.

Gu Jiao Wu sighed. He wished he could see Qiao Tan Yuan, and ask her if they were Du Lei Xin and Gu Jiao Mai, would she believe he wouldn’t be unfaithful to her.

At the hospital Dr. Locker scheduled Gu Jiao Mai’s leg surgery in a week.

Du Lei Xin brought nutritious meals for Gu Jiao Mai to the hospital every day before her leg surgery. Gu Jiao Mai ignored him, but he didn’t give up.

Mr and Mrs Du visited the elders at the Gu Mansion, and they apologised for Du Lei Xin’s irresponsible behavior.

On the day of the surgery, Du Lei Xin visited Gu Jiao Mai at the hospital as usual.

‘Jiao Mai, after the surgery I promise you can hit me, curse me and spit on me as often as you want,’ Du Lei Xin said and held Gu Jiao Mai’s hand. ‘Jiao Mai, I love you.’

Gu Jiao Mai pulled her hand out of Du Lei Xin’s hand, and she closed her eyes. She didn’t believe Du Lei Xin’s lies. He slept with another woman, and she lost her child. The reason she wanted to walk again was so she could walk away from him, and not see him anymore.

Later in the morning, Dr. Locker performed Gu Jiao Mai’s leg surgery in the operating room.

In the afternoon, Dr. Locker walked outside the operating room.

‘Dr. Locker, how is Jiao Mai?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘The leg surgery was successful,’ Dr. Locker said. ‘The patient will need months of rehab to learn to walk again.’

‘Thank you Dr. Locker,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

Gu Jiao Wu and everyone else were relieved to hear the good news.

In the evening, Gu Jiao Mai woke up and she felt thirsty.

‘Water,’ Gu Jiao Mai said.

‘Jiao Mai, you’re awake,’ Du Lei Xin said and he poured Gu Jiao Mai a glass of water.

Gu Jiao Mai pursed her lips, and turned her head to the side.

Gu Jiao Wu poured another glass of water for Gu Jiao Mai.

‘Thank you big brother,’ Gu Jiao Mai said. ‘Where are the elders?’

Du Lei Xin put his rejected glass of water on the table.

‘At home,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘They were worried sick about you. They wouldn’t leave until after they found out your leg surgery’s successful.’

Hu Zui Ren, Tong Shang Wen and Shen Cheng walked into the room carrying bouquet of flowers, and get well gifts.

‘Jiao Mai, Tan Yuan heard about your surgery and she asked me to send you her get well wishes,’ Shen Cheng said.

‘Really?’ Gu Jiao Mai asked.

Gu Jiao Mai glanced at Gu Jiao Wu who was glaring at Shen Cheng the moment Shen Cheng walked into the room.

‘Yes,’ Shen Cheng said. He held up the wallpaper photo of Qiao Tan Yuan and Xiao Bao on his phone proudly. ‘Jiao Mai, this is a photo I took of Tan Yuan and Xiao Bao when I visited them in Denmark. Xiao Bao is nine months old, and she’s starting to say simple words like mama.’

Gu Jiao Mai looked at Xiao Bao’s adorable smiling small face, and she wondered if her child would have looked as adorable as Xiao Bao.

‘Jiao Mai, take good care of yourself,’ Shen Cheng said. ‘I believe you’ll be running soon.’

‘Thank you,’ Gu Jiao Mai said.

Shen Cheng left first, and Gu Jiao Wu followed him outside.

‘Big brother?’ Shen Cheng called.

‘Phone,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘What?’ Shen Cheng asked. ‘Big brother if you want to call someone there is a public phone booth outside. I have somewhere I need to be.’

‘Shen Cheng!’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘Phone.’

Gu Jiao Wu snatched Shen Cheng’s phone, and he took out his phone.

‘Big brother, what are you doing with my phone?’ Shen Cheng asked.

Gu Jiao Wu stared at the photo of Qiao Tan Yuan and Xiao Bao on Shen Cheng’s phone. Qiao Tan Yuan and Xiao Bao were dressed in winter clothes, they wore matching scarves around their necks and they were smiling. Qiao Tan Yuan was his woman, and Xiao Bao was his daughter. He activated his and Shen Cheng’s blue tooth, sent the photo to his phone and erased the photo on Shen Cheng’s phone.

‘Big brother!’ Shen Cheng said. ‘Why did you erase my photo?’

Gu Jiao Wu returned Shen Cheng’s phone, and he looked coldly at Shen Cheng.

‘Stay away from Tan Yuan,’ Gu Jiao Wu warned.

‘Big brother, now there isn’t anything between you and Tan Yuan,’ Shen Cheng said.

‘That is between me and Tan Yuan,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘You better stay away from Tan Yuan and Xiao Bao. You won’t ever get my permission to be Xiao Bao’s father.’
