   Chapter 56 Assassination

Huo Liuyun couldn't follow everything Yun Qi was saying, but he caught the word 'bitch'.

His gentle smile vanished, and his expression turned dark. When he looked at the women around him, there was disgust in his soft, bright eyes, "How dare you insult Miss Feng? Is this how ladies act? Miss Feng is my guest here!"

The cowering women had never seen Huo Liuyun mad, and they were dumbfounded. They understood that the Crown Prince, who was always gentle, could become angry. They all trembled in fear.

Yun Qin strolled calmly over to Yun Canglan admiring Huo Liuyun at that moment, turning to Yun Qi, "Not bad, I think he got your point. He might have potential and be worth cultivating."

Yun Qi looked unhappily over at Yun Qin and replied, "He is of royal descent and graduated from the Royal School. Would his concubines dare offend our Mistress if he had not allowed it?"

Huo Liuyun looked worried when he heard the exchange, "Please Miss Feng, my concubines wounded you with their lack of etiquette and manners, please forgive them. Let me make it up to you, with a celebration at the palace to welcome you, what do you think?"

Yun Canglan looked at Huo Liuyun's handsome face. His smile was for all appearances as mild as the warm wind. She showed a leer in the corner of her lip, "My Crown Prince, no, I don't like noise, forget about it. However, since I'm a guest in your palace, please keep your concubines quiet, or Yun Qin and Yun Qi will be furious."

Both Yun Qin and Yun Qi had a look of disdain when they glanced at their mistress.

"You're the boss." Yun Qin and Yun Qi cheered up for there was going to be some fun.

'What? He waits for my instructions to requite my favors? He really doesn't play it by ear.'

She was free this evening, "Ask him to do it tonight."

The dark, windy night would have no moon making it the perfect backdrop for an assassination.

When the sunlight began to slip to the horizon, the lights at the imperial palace of Can Kingdom came on. The mood was heavy with a haze in the air around, and it was dimmer than during the day.

Outside each exquisite palace of the Crown Prince's Eastern Palace and the Emperor's Western Palace, there was a Yinjun Lantern. The beauties housed in the palaces waited, hopeful yet sadness in their eyes as they anticipated a visit from the Crown Prince or the Emperor.

Guards with sabers passed by the palace gate in a straight row, their armor raising a cloud of dust while clanking loudly.

d a modest palace, and within seconds there came a deafening, heart-rending cry.

"Ahh...As..assassin..."

Came the warning alarm shouted, and spreading like a firecracker in the air, across the quiet Eastern Palace. Footsteps approached from afar, as the peaceful night turned to chaotic noise and panic.

Huo Liuyun hearing the commotion too led troops to the palace. When he arrived, a masked man in black was fighting the palace guards.

"What's happened? What is this assassin doing here?" Huo Liuyun stood just outside the brawl demanding to know, his voice deep, and his expression was harsh.

It was apparent though; the assassin was here to assassinate.

The chief guard on night duty rushed to him, "My Crown Prince, the assassin had murdered Lady Yuan, and carries her head in the parcel he holds."

Huo Liuyun noticed that the assassin was holding a package, which was oozing a thick scarlet red intermittently. The murderer was skilled in kung fu, dealing efficiently with a dozen guards while gripping his parcel tightly in his hand.

The headless remains of a woman scantily clothed was laying on the steps of the palace. Crimson blood dripped down the stairs, forming a pool. The glow from the lights gave it an eerie appearance.

Huo Liuyun stood his mouth agape at the alarming sight.

Lady Yuan was the newest concubine. Her father was the Minister of Works. He had little real power, but he had many connections because of how long he had remained in office. He would require an explanation from the Royal Court when he discovered his daughter was murdered.

"Catch the assassin, bring him to me, dead or alive!"

More men joined the fray as Huo Liuyun barked his orders out, and after a while, the assassin struggled.

"What's all the buzzing, is the Crown Prince rehearsing for a play?"

The voice was a surprise to hear, but pleasant and the fighting stalled while guards searched for the source.

Looking down from a nearby roof were three people. Their clothes fluttered in the wind.

Dressed in red against the wind, was an imposing figure. The wicked grin gave a subtle natural appeal, while the moon glow cast from behind, gave the illusion of holy radiance. Embroidered in black silk against the red, was a Phoenix which stretched from the back to the front of the dress. The phoenix reared its head high, worthy of the title King of birds. Red tassels on hairpin danced as a spirit, waving in tune to the night wind. An open White Jade Fan flashed, and the moonlight added brilliance and beauty to the fan's radiant light.

Identical twins stood quietly beside the Night Phoenix. The handsome faces seemed superior. Their white clothes, billowing as they did, gave them an appearance of floating in the air.

The three of them seemed to absorb the light of the world as they stood there. Through small movements, they charmed the audience now below.

The Night Phoenix was the most outstanding masterpiece, with pride that boasted dominion of heaven and earth. Though laughing, there was an undertone of murder.

"Mister Night Phoenix?" Huo Liuyun breathed in wonder.

'He cuts a fine figure of a man dressed in red. His White Jade Fan makes jianghu quiver with fear, His hairpin will save the world. The Medical Sage and Poison Sage devotedly accompany him.'

There was no need to ask the name, just one eye; people knew that he was Night Phoenix, the top member of the Nine Prominent Figures of the world.
