INSPIRATIONAL MUSINGS 21 Waking Up Early is Something Achievers Have in Common

"It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth and wisdom"

— Aristotle

I can still remember the sound of the bell at 5:45 am every morning for three years when I was in the junior secondary class in Unity Secondary School Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria (renamed Ekiti Government College, Ado-Ekiti). It was such a horrific experience at the time because the beds weren't exactly comfortable coupled with other issues like mosquitoes and human distractions, so you would barely have the kind of sleep you desired before the bells rang.

This experience made me dislike the habit of waking up early, I was actually coerced into getting used to it by circumstances I had no control over or so I thought at the time. The moment I got promoted to the senior secondary class and I became a "stakeholder" so to say, it was the first thing I discarded of as quickly as possible.

As a senior secondary class student, that was an express ticket to flout rules and regulations, actually it was a big relief to have the liberty to add at least an extra hour or an hour and a half to my bed hours. I never had to follow any routine of waking up early till several years later, this time I had to get used to it in a hard way. A reminder of the principle of going through your trials as at when required so you don't have to go through as twice as much after you must have been punished by life initially. The punishment is often like a double jeopardy, which is getting punished twice for the same offence, that's a topic i will want us to treat on another day.

Let's have a quick look at achievers that are early birds: Apple CEO Tim Cook is known for getting up and sending out company emails according to Gawker's Ryan Tate. By 5 AM he can be found in the gym. And he works late too, priding himself on being the first in the office and the last out. Also, Disney C.E.O. Bob Iger told the New York Times he gets up at 4:30am every morning. He takes the quiet time to do a number of things, claiming to read the papers, exercise, listen to music, look at email, and watch TV all at once. Even though it's quiet time, he's already multitasking.

Same for former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W Bush Jnr, the first Bush would get up at 4 a.m., gorunning, be in the office by 6 a.m. and stay up until 2 a.m. "He was a horror," said a former White House nurse who had to try to keep up with him. The second Bush kept a similar schedule, going to the office by 6.45 a.m. and often holding meetings at this ripe hour, according to The New York Times.

So did W. Bush's cabinet member, Colin Powell put in"perfectly appalling" hours, arriving to the office at 6 a.m., and not leaving until after 7 p.m., according to his former students. Condoleezza Rice, the former secretary of state of the United States of America woke up every day at 4:30 a.m. in order to get to the gym before work. Let's bring it home, the richest black man in the world, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, wakes up by 5 am everyday.

Why You Must Wake Up Early Daily to Pursue Your Dreams

It increases productivity: when you rise early you are a step ahead of competitors because you will have more time in the mornings to attend to many issues before anybody, whilst others are still trying to settle in at 9am at their different desks, you have probably had 90 minutes to plan and write down the tasks for the dayamongstothers.

You have time to exercise in the morning: your health is more important than any money you want to make or goals you plan to achieve. If you don't take care of your body it won't be long before you breakdown completely, this is something achievers have known over the years, they spend time to work out almost on a daily basis. It boosts your immune system and also increase energy levels, it helps focus at work and helps mental alertness. It also helps your mood.

It provides time for meditation: If you pay attention to spirituality like me then being an early bird helps you to meditate on the word of God and pray early in the morning, this refreshes your soul and build your faith, you face the day with more confidencehavingafeelingyoucanachievewhateveryousetyour hearttodoonthatparticularday.

It helps you conquer physical and mental laziness: since you rise early having conquered the urge to be in bed whilst others are atworkorontheirwaytowork, you will have more time to read, to work and to improve yourself generally. Excessive sleep or irregular sleep schedule has a way of reducing your level of concentration, leading to mental laziness. Waking up early makes you more disciplined, and once you improve on your level of discipline, there's a lot you can achieve on a daily basis.

Makes you more consistent with what you do: consistency makes you follow a pattern, when you are used to doing the same positive thing every day, progress is inevitable. Once a pattern of progress is established, getting things done will come naturally to you, in the process you will turn out to be a very result oriented person. It also helps your drive. You become self-motivated in the process.

Waking up early is one of those good habits you have to make a part of you to become a better person in life. It improves your health and it also provides the time you need to attend to family matters, since many things compete for our time these days. You can practice the habit for a year, I promise you will be surprised how your level of productivity will so much experience a boost, and work won't be a burden anymore, it even helps further when you enjoy what you do. Also since you can achieve improved mood levels through exercise as a result of waking up early, you will become a happier person, a lot of people will notice it and commend you for it.
