Chapter 89 - The Past

Lu Qingjiu's heart was hard, but he didn't know how to express it. He wanted to talk to his grandfather again, but the way things were going, it didn't look good for him, and this time Zhu Rong came to Bai Yuehu with the dragon claw, not knowing what it was about.

Zhu Miaomiao, who was in the field with Bai Yuehu, came back early and told Lu Qingjiu that Bai Yuehu had asked her to give her a message that he had to go out on some business, so he would not be back for lunch.

"He was out with the redhead," Lu Qingjiu asked.

"Hmm." Zhu Miaomiao nodded, "What's wrong"

Lu Qingjiu said, "It's alright, I'll make lunch later." Zhu Miaomiao was an ordinary person after all, and it didn't seem to do any good to talk to her about it.

Zhu Miaomiao nodded blankly as she said, "Oh so."

Lu Qingjiu puts on a smile and rolls up his sleeves to cook. The food he ate in the morning was glutinous rice, which was particularly hard to eat, and it was almost midday and Lu Qingjiu had little appetite. But there are still a few mouths to feed, so he's still up to the task of making a hearty lunch.

For lunch, Zhu Miaomiao brought fruit, Lu Qingjiu made steamed rice with pineapples using glutinous rice, and stir-fried shrimps, and the family had left over a portion of prime pork from the previous pig slaughter, which he defrosted and stir-fried with salt-fried pork and half a chicken.

Zhu Miaomiao's mouth watered at the smell and she never put her chopsticks down. She had eaten a lot of fine cuisine before, but she had never tasted such a delicious taste anywhere else. Not to mention the other dishes, even the rice in the bowl was so fragrant, the grains were so clear, sweet and fragrant that she could have finished this bowl of rice without having to eat it.

Lu Qingjiu had something on his mind and his appetite was not so good, but he was happy to see Zhu Miaomiao digging into his rice.

Seeing that Yin Xun and Zhu Miaomiao had almost finished eating, Lu Qingjiu got up and said he wanted to go for a nap and left the table.

"Is Sake not too happy." Zhu Miaomiao poked Yin Xun .

Yin Xun said, "Does it seem like something happened in the morning?"

Zhu Miaomiao told Bai Yuehu about leaving with someone.

Yin Xun said, "It's probably something to do with Bai Yuehu, it's okay, it should be fine when Bai Yuehu comes back tonight, I'm going to wash the dishes, you should go and rest too."

Zhu Miaomiao nodded his head and said hello.

Lu Qingjiu went back to his room and took out the wooden box that his grandmother had left him, which had been re-closed and looked like it could only be opened on Lu Qingjiu's birthday. Lu Qingjiu had already taken out all the contents of the box, including his diary and the scarred scales.

When he saw the scales, Lu Qingjiu suddenly thought of something. When he had given Bai Yuehu a bath earlier, Bai Yuehu had mentioned that each of the dragon's scales was tactile, and that if the scales fell off the dragon's body, they would only remain there if the dragon agreed.

The scales are clearly a reminder of what Grandpa left for Grandma, and the last tie between the two.

Lu Qingjiu could not resist picking up the dragon scale and gently stroking the old scars on it. He thought of the still blood-dripping dragon claw carried by Zhu Rong's hand and felt hard in his heart. Having seen Bai Yuehu in his true form, he had a soft spot for this beautiful and noble creature, and as his grandfather was his last family member in the world, Lu Qingjiu could not help but sigh heavily at the thought of the various wounds that covered his body.

It is two o'clock in the afternoon and the whole courtyard is brightly lit by the glorious sun. Yin Xun and Zhu Miaomiao are both taking a nap, and an air of silence pervades the entire old house.

Lu Qingjiu was about to put down his things and go to bed for a nap when he noticed a butterfly flying by his window. If it were just a normal butterfly, it would have been fine, but this one caught Lu Qingjiu's eye as soon as it appeared, for no other reason than it was so beautiful. The wings were dark blue with a black pattern that at first glance looked like a wandering black dragon. It slowly danced its wings and flew into the window, resting in front of Lu Qingjiu on the black scales that belonged to his grandfather.

Lu Qingjiu looked at it and couldn't help but extend his finger towards it. The butterfly actually flew to Lu Qingjiu's finger the next moment, flicking its wings, as if telling him something.

Lu Qingjiu said: "Are you trying to tell me something?" he asked.

As if it understood him, the butterfly fluttered into mid-air again and then flew towards the window, turning back every now and then as it flew out, as if to let Lu Qingjiu follow it.

Lu Qingjiu remembered that he seemed to have used a similar method when his grandfather had approached him before, and hurriedly followed him out.

The butterflies go on their way, followed by Lu Qingjiu, and one soon leaves Shuifu Village in the direction of the forest.

Lu Qingjiu sent a text message to Bai Yuehu before he left, explaining the situation briefly and asking him not to worry about himself.

The butterfly flew very slowly, as if it was worried that Lu Qingjiu would not be able to keep up. Lu Qingjiu also noticed that as he followed the butterfly deeper and deeper into the forest, his surroundings were gradually becoming unfamiliar, and he had obviously entered a whole new world, which, if he was right, belonged to his grandfather.

The trees that had been flourishing around began to wither, and not even a trace of green grass could be seen on the ground, not to mention other animals and insects. It was as if the world had lost all its vitality, leaving only a silent dead silence.

In the midst of the dead trees, Lu Qingjiu finally saw the person he was looking for and stopped in his tracks, unable to stop himself from shouting the call he had been holding in his heart for so long: "Grandfather".

The man sitting in the middle of the dead tree slowly turned his head back, dressed in black, his eyes closed and with unhealed wounds on his cheeks, and when he heard Lu Qingjiu's voice, he gave a smile and wanted to say something, but remembered that he could not speak in this state, so he beckoned Lu Qingjiu to come over.

"Grandpa, are you all right." Lu Qingjiu hurried over to him.

Ao Run gave a smile and seemed to reach out to take Lu Qingjiu's hand as he had done before, but realised that his right arm was too empty to reach out, and he froze for a moment before he switched to his left hand as if nothing had happened and gestured for Lu Qingjiu to put his hand up.

Lu Qingjiu looked at Ao Run's empty right arm and felt that something had caught in his throat, so he didn't know what to say.

"You're hurt." Lu Qingjiu said, "Zhu Rong said you would die if you didn't go back, I was so worried."

Ao Run smiled as he wrote on Lu Qingjiu's hand, "I won't be going back."

Lu Qingjiu said, "Why?"

Ao Run explained slowly, his fingertips sliding over Lu Qingjiu's hand, very softly and gently, "I stayed there before to redeem myself, but now I have to get out, Qingjiu, you are my grandson and I want you to leave Shuifu Village."

Lu Qingjiu looked at Ao Run blankly: "Why?"

Ao Run continues, "Because only when you are contaminated can you understand what contamination really means." He smiles bitterly and writes: "Pollution is an exaggeration, to be precise, it is simply the complete exposure of your desires."

Lu Qingjiu thought of the red-haired basilisk and shuddered, "The desire of the dragons is to eat the ones they love the most"

Ao Run nodded and continued to explain, "This has been the case since ancient times, in fact it is also the case with humans, except that humans have limited abilities and limited destructive power, so many of them do not have much effect even if they are contaminated, as for the dragons"

The dragons, by nature, are gods. The destructive power of a tainted god can be imagined without words.

Lu Qingjiu continues to listen in silence, there is so much he does not understand, and Ao Run's words only lift the corner of the fog.

"I'm going to tell you what really happened back then." Ao Run wrote, "The answers will be brutal, do you want to hear them too"

Lu Qingjiu nodded in panic, and at the same time he sensed an ominous aura.

"Your grandmother and I had a wonderful time after we fell in love." Ao Run writes, "but then she got pregnant and I fell into the trap and was unfortunately contaminated before I knew the news."

Lu Qingjiu sits down next to him, making it easier for Ao Run to write. For the first time, he feels Ao Run's weakness; instead of the overpowering aura of a dragon, he looks like a foggy mist on the verge of disappearing in the mountains in the early morning.

With Ao Run's slow description, Lu Qingjiu learns what happened afterwards.

The only restriction on being tainted is that they can no longer enter the human realm. The only restriction is that they can no longer enter the human realm. Whatever their personalities, the tainted dragons change their temperament and become irritable, even if they are as gentle as Ao Run. Despite a hundred reluctances in his heart, he chose to leave for fear of hurting his lover. Meanwhile, the Dragons have sent a new tenant, Bai Yuehu.

Back in the Otherworld, Ao Run learns that his lover is pregnant, and he is overjoyed to see the child being born. But he had some sense and knew that if he went to the human world, he might do something irreversible, so Ao Run forced himself to hold back his desire and began to look for a way to suppress the contamination.

According to Ao Run, contamination is in fact the complete reversal of your inner desire and desire for control, which normally suppresses desire, but when contaminated, this suppression cannot have an effect.

The dragon's instinct is to eat what it loves most, so it is only natural that a tainted dragon, too, would be unable to control its desire to eat its lover.

Ao Run also wants to, like, go crazy.

Even when he thought he was losing control, he finally found a way to reduce the contamination by splitting his soul in two and driving it into the other half, the red-haired Ao Run that Lu Qingjiu had met.

Splitting his soul is not an easy task for a dragon, and even Ao Run loses control of his body at some point as a result, but it is good that he is able to sneak off to the human realm when he is awake and see his beloved without fear of hurting her.

Ao Run watched his daughter being born, growing up and finally leaving Shuifu Village at the request of his grandmother. He was disappointed, but realised that it was safer to be an ordinary human than a guardian. She did not want her daughter to repeat the same mistake, so she did not even tell her of Bai Yuehu's existence, which she kept hidden until her death.

Lu Qingjiu did not urge him on, but waited in silence. Having not looked closely before, he realised that the shape of Ao Run's eyebrows and eyes were indeed very similar to his own mother's, especially those eyes that should have been very beautiful but were now two empty holes. Lu Qingjiu took advantage of this gap to look around him and he noticed some butterflies resting on Ao Run's shoulders and back, the same kind of blue butterflies that had drawn him here, which were exceptionally beautiful.

"Are you tired?" Lu Qingjiu asked in a whisper, "You can talk about it another time if you're tired."

Ao Run smiles and shakes his head to show that he is not tired.

Lu Qingjiu said, "But I'm worried about you," he said, smelling the blood on Ao Run's body.

Ao Run sighed slightly, stroked Lu Qingjiu's head with his only remaining left hand, and then began to write: "This life went on until one summer, when you were so big that I had seen you as a child without giving you a hug."

Lu Qingjiu was so upset that he reached out and hugged Ao Run tightly, as if he were hugging his grandmother. He no longer had his parents or his grandmother and Ao Run was his only elder.

"It was a hot summer day and I heard that your mother seemed to want to return to Shuifu Village and thought I would come to the human realm to see her." Ao Run wrote slowly, "Only I didn't expect the uncontrollable accident."

The identity of Lu Qingjiu's mother was unique in that she was neither human nor dragon, but of mixed blood. If a human is contaminated, the spirit is usually suppressed in Shuifu Village, and such a person cannot leave Shuifu Village, which is where the tablets in Yin Xun's house come from. But she is half dragon in her blood. Lu Qingjiu's mother was also unfortunately contaminated during a visit to her family. Ao Run does not describe in detail why her mother was contaminated, and Lu Qingjiu does not ask questions because he senses a great deal of pain in Ao Run's tone of voice.

"Someone is behind the whole thing." Ao Run wrote: "Including me, and including your mother."

Lu Qingjiu's heart seized at his words.

"Your mother wasn't spared and was just contaminated, but presumably because she had dragon blood in her body she wasn't trapped in Shuifu Village and could leave." Ao Run continues, "Your grandmother didn't want her to repeat the same mistake, so she didn't tell the other dragons about it either, and no other dragons knew about it except Bai Yuehu"

Bai Yuehu knew about Lu Qingjiu's mother right from the start, but perhaps because of his promise to his grandmother, he did not tell Lu Qingjiu.

"And then later, it came to that summer." Ao Run's hand began to tremble slightly, and though his expression did not change much, a strong

depressed sadness, "Your mother is back I want to see her, I haven't seen her for a long time"

Lu Qingjiu's eyes reddened at these words and he reached up to wipe his face, suppressing the emotions that were tumbling in his chest, and pressed the back of Ao Run's hand with his other hand, trying to give him some comfort: "Grandfather."

Without replying, Ao Run patted his hand and continued writing, "But then there was an accident."

Lu Qingjiu's mother, suddenly bursting with the part of her bloodline that belonged to the dragons, ate her lover, Lu Qingjiu's father.

When Ao Run wrote this, Lu Qingjiu felt a chill from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head; he had speculated on many possibilities, but never guessed the truth. When he thought about it now, it was true that at some point before the accident, his mother had become much more violent, and he had not thought much about it at the time, thinking that there was a gap between his mother and father. It was only at this moment that he realised what that irritability meant.

Humans are not in the habit of devouring their loved ones, so even if they are tainted, they will not cause much harm to them, at most they will be bad-tempered. But dragons are different. They are by nature greedy creatures and hate to hide all their beloved things in their bellies, never to be coveted by others again.

The mother, who has regained her dragon bloodline, turns into a dragon body and swallows her lover in one gulp without hesitation.

Ao Run, who had arrived in the human world to see his daughter, witnessed all this.

Lu Qingjiu could not speak, he was in a state of great sadness, he could not imagine what it must have been like to see it with his own eyes, let alone with Ao Run's.

"The next thing I knew, she was heading towards the old house." Ao Run writes, "I knew what she wanted to do, she wanted to eat her beloved mother, my love." A sad and kind smile rose to his face as he wrote, "I could not allow this to happen, my love, only I could swallow it myself."

Lu Qingjiu shuddered, "So you ate my mother."

Ao Run nodded, he seemed worried that Lu Qingjiu would become disgusted with him as a result, he grabbed Lu Qingjiu's hand with some apprehension and continued to write, "I was only trying to stop her, but in using my power, the tainted soul used my body, and by the time I regained control of my body again, she was gone "All that remained was a sting of blood and countless broken scales, telling Ao Run what he had done.

Lu Qingjiu knew all about what happened afterwards.

Ao Run, who had eaten his daughter, was severely punished by the dragons, and he did not retort, for he had indeed done so. He did not explain the reason for it, but perhaps it was no longer necessary in his view, for after all, it would have been a shock, not a comfort, for Grandmother to know that her daughter had also eaten her lover.

At that moment, Lu Qingjiu also felt what it meant to know that it was better to know than not to know. He had finally found out how his parents had died, but there was no comfort in it. He looked at the broken and tattered grandfather beside him and reached out to grab his wrist. Ao Run's wrist was cold and his whole body seemed to have lost its temperature.

"Grandpa, go back and talk to them." Lu Qingjiu couldn't bear to see him go on like this, he couldn't bear to see his only relative suffer like this, "Don't go on like this, I am your grandson, I am willing to do right by you"

Ao Run smiled and shook his head as he wrote: "I have come out for a purpose and I will not return until it has been achieved."

"What is the purpose?" Lu Qingjiu asked eagerly.

Ao Run wrote: "I told you that I was contaminated by mistake, and afterwards your mother was contaminated by accident"

Lu Qingjiu immediately understood: "You want to find the person behind it."

Ao Run nods his head.

"Who the hell is he and why is he doing this?" Lu Qingjiu remembered something Bai Yuehu had taught him and said, "Is it something to do with someone on the Candle Dragon side, Grand Master?"

In the middle of his sentence, Ao Run started coughing so hard that he began to dry-heave as if he was trying to cough up his insides.

Lu Qingjiu patted his back to make him feel better, but as he did so, he felt that something was wrong, and upon closer inspection, he realised that the ice-blue butterflies that had been attached to Ao Run's back were becoming more and more numerous. Lu Qingjiu had thought that the butterflies were driven by Ao Run, but upon closer inspection, he realised that they were sucking the blood from Ao Run's clothes and could not be driven away.

"Grandpa, are you all right?" Lu Qingjiu tensed up for a moment, he clearly sensed that something was wrong, "Why are these butterflies getting more and more numerous?"

Ao Run was still vomiting heavily, only after hearing Lu Qingjiu's words, some doubt appeared on his face, as if he wanted to say something, but was interrupted by a violent vomiting reaction.

Lu Qingjiu, who was sitting next to Ao Run, watched as Ao Run's hair began to turn red and his gentle aura was replaced by a wild one.

Lu Qingjiu knew he was dangerous, but he couldn't bear to leave him behind, and when Ao Run stopped gagging and looked up, his face was already covered in a wild, uncontrollable smile, and he grinned, once again making the raspy sound Lu Qingjiu had heard before, "Long time no see, my dear grandson."

Lu Qingjiu frowned at him: "You"

"I'm your grandfather too." He straightened up and came up to Lu Qingjiu, "What, so you don't know me?"

Lu Qingjiu tried to stand up, but he pressed his shoulder straight down and he said, "He told you everything"

"What does everything mean," Lu Qingjiu said, "and what do you want to know?"

The red-haired Ao Run tsked, seemingly a little displeased with Lu Qingjiu's reaction, and tossed his empty sleeve, saying unpleasantly, "Tell him to stop tossing this body, and if he tosses it again and really dies, he'll never know what he wants to know for the rest of his life."

Lu Qingjiu said warily, "You know who's behind this."

"Of course I know." Ao Run laughed loudly as he held out his hand and a blue butterfly rested on it, "Without him, there would be no me, I was created by him, of course I had to know." With a wave of his hand, he grabbed the butterfly into his palm, and it actually turned into a cloud of water emitting cold air directly in his hand.

Lu Qingjiu was about to say something when Ao Run reached out and slapped him on the head, and Lu Qingjiu felt a bone-chilling chill invade his mind.
