It was on one specific occasion that her selfish personality led to an unnecessary incident. One blustery morning, their parents told the sisters to go to the field to do some work. Ngun Nu and her sister did as they were told and worked until midday, when the sun had come out of from behind the thick gray clouds.
The sun shone rather brightly on the sisters, tiring them and making them perspire. "Sister, it's much too hot to be working right now. Let's take a break to look for some white cucumbers," Ngun Nu suggested. "Gladly!" The girls dropped their tools and raced around the field, looking for juicy, tasteful white cucumbers to consume. White cucumbers were the tastiest of the cucumbers and it was very rare to find one.

Luckily, Ngun Nu's younger sister managed to snag a sizable one from the ground in just a few minutes. How mouth-watering it looked! The girl began to nibble on her cucumber, savoring the delicious flavor. Ngun Nu, unfortunately, only found a diminutive green cucumber, that had absolutely no flavor to it. She frowned at hers and glanced over to see her sister's amazing white cucumber.
"Sister, please let me take a bite out of that," she pleaded. Ngun Nu's sister scowled at her and turned her head away greedily. "Find your own! There's plenty around here," was the reply. "But there isn't. There's only one good cucumber in this field and it's the one you're holding. Please, I'm hungry, too. We've been working since daybreak."
"No."
"Please, sister, our parents told us to share ever since we were little kids."
"Which is exactly why I won't share with you. Besides, our parents aren't here right now; they won't know."
Ngun Nu saw that she had no chance of getting anywhere with this rational pleading tactic. She waited a little longer and her stomach grumbled like never before, and that's really saying something. Her sister had been nibbling little bits of the cucumber and by now, it was almost done. Ngun Nu realized that if she didn't do something now, she would have no food for the rest of the day.
So she stood up from where she had been sitting and walked over to a patch of quicksand. "Sister, if you don't let me take a bite out of the white cucumber, I'll allow Quicksand to swallow me." Now, back in the day, you could 'communicate' somewhat with quicksand. In Chin, they called it, 'Chuncung Hlum.'
If you wanted it to swallow you, you simply had to chant, "Quicksand, Quicksand, swallow me, swallow me" (or in Chin, "Chuncung Hlum, ka seng, ka seng"). Ngun Nu's sister laughed scornfully when she heard this. "Go ahead and do that! Then I won't have to worry about any sister telling me what to do," she didn't even bother to turn and look.
Really, the younger sister thought it was some sort of trick to get her to share. Ngun Nu couldn't believe her ears. Was her sister really this ignorant and greedy? Wistfully, Ngun Nu chanted, "Quicksand, Quicksand, swallow me, swallow me; My sister won't share her white cucumber with me" (in Chin, "Chungcung Hlum, ka seng, ka seng; ka nau nih zil a ka cheu duh lo e").
When she finished this chant, the quicksand swallowed her up to her ankle. Again, she asked, "sister, please share the remaining bits of the white cucumber with me." Again, the younger sister answered selfishly, "No way! Find your own!" So Ngun Nu chanted again, "Quicksand, Quicksand, swallow me, swallow me; My sister won't share her white cucumber with me." The quicksand swallowed her up to her stomach.
"Sister, please share the remaining bits of the white cucumber with me," Ngun Nu pleaded. "Nope." Once more, Ngun Nu chanted, "Quicksand, Quicksand, swallow me, swallow me; My sister won't share her white cucumber with me." The quicksand swallowed her up to her neck. Ngun Nu struggled for breath. "Sister, please," she elaborated the 'please.' "Share the remaining bits of the white cucumber with me."
By this time, Ngun Nu's younger sister finally began to show concern. Pacing herself, she turned around to face her older sister neck-deep in the quicksand. Her chestnut brown eyes were brimming with tears. The younger sister almost gave in but she immediately avoided eye contact and once again refused to share it.
"I know it's all just a trick, stop faking and get out of there before something happens," she said firmly. Ngun Nu shook her head to the best of her ability. "It's not a trick."
"No!" Ngun Nu's younger sister practically screamed. A brief, painful silence passed by, followed by, "Quicksand, Quicksand, swallow me, swallow me; My sister won't share her white cucumber with-," the younger sister cut her off.
"Okay, I'm sorry! I'll share the cucumber with you!" she turned around again, her arms ready to pry her sister out and embrace her. But when she turned around, Ngun Nu was nowhere to be found. A couple of strands of hair as black as the darkest twilight took her place. Another silence passed, this one was even more painful than before.
As if to answer to some secret signal, the younger sister shrieked in agonizing remorse. The young girl clawed furiously at the ground, desperately trying to somehow help her sister get out. However, she knew it was no use. Ngun Nu's younger sister sobbed uncontrollably in sorrow, praying so hard for forgiveness. It was a pitiful sight.
Weeping the entire way home, Ngun Nu's younger sister vowed that if there was a way to somehow retrieve her beloved sister from the dead, she would. Even if it meant giving up her own life.
