Tragedy of Rain 29 Chapter 29: Rainfall part 1

The metal was slick and jet black, like a starless night. The grooves left behind during forging could be seen as ripples. It was castle forged using the finest iron ingots available. Remon had overdone it, taking time to design it to not only fit her fine physique but to use it as a weapon. Large sections in the chest and back were open to reveal flesh to her adversaries, easily turning their eyes away from the silent curves of sharpened metal that made the edges in the gauntlets that extended to her forearms. The revealing armor would also allow herself plenty of breathing room to cast fire without damaging or tarnishing it.

She looked at the metal plates in fascination and touched it to feel how cold and smooth it was.

"It gets you aroused just looking at it doesn't it?" Tristan spoke behind her humorously.

Rain ignored him and spoke directly to Remon who seemed proud of his work, "How did you get my measurements?"

He blushed, "I took the liberty while you were recovering..."

There was a long pause before asking the next question on her mind. "Even my bust size?" She looked at him curiously.

He didn't answer, the look of shame his only testimony.

Rain sighed and disrobed in the middle of the armory. The silk robe, which had just barely shielded her supple skin, slid from her shoulders down to the floor. Remon immediately seemed confused. She could only imagine what was going through Sir Tristan's mind.

"What are you doing?" Tristan spoke alarmed.

"Well it's not like you both haven't seen everything," she scowled at him. The armor wasn't easy to put on, it was made up of several layers of iron plates with small patches of chainmail. Thin leather padding had been grafted to the inner layers to make it sit comfortably against her skin. She let Remon help her by showing how to interlock each section and adjust the belts to tighten or loosen. It took nearly 30 minutes before her transformation was complete.

"What do you think?" Remon seemed pleased with himself. Maybe a little too pleased.

Rain flexed her arms and moved her hips. She wished it could be a little more flexible. There was something else about it that she didn't sense at first. She felt raw power deep within herself as if it were in abundance. She clenched her fist and fire danced across the gauntlets. The light of the fire mixed with the jet black to make it appear like it was melting. Normally she would sense her power starting to wane as she continually used it, but so far it felt like it was growing.

"This feels strange..." Rain looked at the blacksmith who was nodding to himself.

"Whats strange?" He asked.

"My magic...I've never felt so much energy."

"What do you mean?" Being a man of science Remon had a hard time understanding the nature of her abilities more so than anybody.

"It feels like there's a well inside me that is being filled to the brim." It was the only way she thought to describe it.

"Was there anything different with the metal you were using?" Tristan asked Remon. He didn't seem to have any idea to what he was referring.

"Doesn't it feel so good little diva?" Rain heard the sour voice and turned around.

"What the hell!" She seemed suddenly frightened. Remon and Tristan looked at her in alarm. Rain expected to see her old friend Zane, but his voice was changed. Like it was sickened. She felt a cold sweat down her brow. Maybe the random surge of power didn't come from the armor at all. Maybe it came from something else?

"What is going on?" Before Remon could get an answer the ground shook above.

It was as if the earth was splitting in two. Chaos erupted above them like a reaper come to harvest. The trio froze as the noise of a crescendo of muskets rang out sending sparks of light towards an unseen foe only to be followed by larger explosions. Rain could already smell the smoke underground. More vibrations continued.

"Artillery? When the hell did they get artillery. We need to get up there now!" Tristan drew his sword and rushed up the stairs to reach the surface. Dusk and mold dropped from the ceiling of their cellar as more bone crunching noise shook from above.

Rain followed, ignoring the smell of death. The doors to the caller opened revealing hundreds of men screaming in disorderly panic. The sounds of incoming ordnance created an almost liquid sound as it descended from above. Each impact sounded as if a hammer were meeting a rotting surface. The sounds of each shell made her stomach sick. A shell landed close to the entrance, its shockwave pushing her back down the stairs. Sir Tristan nearly fell down as well, half his body planted into the earth while his legs still scrapped the wooden steps. A grotesque substance coated him and rolled down the stairs to her feet. There wasn't a word in any language she knew to describe how it smelled.

Each thud was followed by another and another until her ears sang a tune of piercing rings. Rain gritted her teeth counting down the seconds praying to gods another one didn't land near the entrance. When the barrage finally ceased the blood soak mists made her want to gag. She stayed where she was watching the fog. A few survivors moaned and cried out. Other noises of inhuman footsteps and snarls haunted the battle fog. Sir Tristan barely got himself up before being pulled into the world above. It happened so fast she didn't even see the long fingered hand that took him.

"Raaaaiiiiinnnnn," a sour voice called, "Won't you come up to join us, we've been waiting..."

Rain could hear wet throats and slashing blades above. She could smell the copper scent of blood and taste it in the air. Whatever toxin had bombarded them had coated her nostrils will something profane. The bloodied mixture was disorienting. But somehow she wasn't afraid.

"Remon...no matter what happens don't leave this cellar," she didn't have to look back to know he would comply with her demands. The world above was silence mixed with random noise. The sounds were sluggish and slow almost like they were coming from under water. Faint shadows moved like liquid in the mist.

Rain tapped the magic within herself and fire glowed from her exposed skin. The armor made a hissing noise as the flame kissed it.

"I'm coming you bastard," she declared as she advanced up the steps and into the world above.
