Tragedy of Rain 1 Chapter 1: Prologue
"My name is..." her voice was heavy, her shoulders unsteady. She paused trying to catch her breath and found it difficult.

"Speak knife ear, or have you suddenly become mute?" The guard mocked her. He was like a giant casting a looming shadow over her.

"My name is Rain," she answered trying to keep her voice steady. Her attempts failed every time she had to speak to one of the guards.

"And what are you doing trying to leave the alienage knife ear? Or have you leave of your senses?" The alienage was the only place for elves in the city, in most cities in the kingdom. She never fit in there, hell she never fit in anywhere.

"I'm half human, so I have every right to leave here!" She found some courage making the declaration. She had no idea how it would go. It was obvious when she stood beside other elves. She stood taller, broader, and more filled out than the average elf but next to other humans she looked the opposite.

The guardsman sneered at her, the back of his hand impacting her cheek forcing her to fall back hard. She had half expected that, even trained to react, but he was so fast and so cruel in his assault that she simply didn't respond in time. The mud caked earth smelled of filth, her clothes seeped in brown liquid as she slowly got up.

"Who told you to get up!" The guard kicked her down, she shielded herself desperately covering her head with her arms, "your nothing but a knife ear, you always will be one! I'll teach you to mind your own place!"

The guard was agitated, but also clumsy. His kicks got weaker and his attacks more jarring. Rain's instincts took over, her mother's training took over. She unsheathes the knife at her waisted and as the guard descends on her again she slides in the mud to dodge the blow. The guards sudden impact on the muddy earth upsets his balance and he falls backward almost comically. She knows she doesn't have much time before he recovers and throws herself on top of him. Her knife In hand she pushes the blade to his throat.

"Call me knife ear one more time." Her voice is calm, her bright blue eyes piercing the guards like lightning. Her short almond hair was matted with dirt and her smooth narrow face suddenly looked more human than before.

This time it was the guards turn to pause, he was dizzy and perhaps even suffering a concussion. But the look in his eyes was a mix of surprise and terror, "please don't kill me!" His words were slurred.

Rain didn't want to actually kill him, but she suddenly got very worried about what would happen if she let him go. He was still stronger and if given the chance could try to over power her again. She doubted he would fall to the same mistake again. Unconsciously her hand started to press harder. She stopped herself and realizing what she was just about to do jumped off of him. Her hand was shaking.

The guard seemed too shocked to stand at first then slowly got up. She had thrown the dagger on the ground, she didn't care though. The idea that she was just about to kill a man so easily had frightened her in a way she never felt before.

Years of being called shemlen by her neighbors for not being elf enough, and years of being called knife ear by the humans had taught her fear, but having such power was something else entirely.

The guardsman seemed stunned but slowly collected himself. He finally stood straight, wiped the dirt off his uniform and blew a sickening piece of mud out his nose. He then felt the small thin cut around his throat, a single drop of crimson warmed his fingertips.

"You know I can have your hands cut off for that girl," his voice suddenly carried more weight.

"I guess you'll first have to explain how a knife ear overpowered you first." She answers in kind.

The guardsman considered this for a while, the sound of thunder overhead grew louder followed by the rain. The rainy season was still at its height and likely to continue on for another several weeks. It had made life in the alianage finally too unbearable for her to endure.

"Maybe...your a human after all little girl," he finally answered, "best get off now, I'll pretend I never saw you." He turned away from her, even ignoring the dagger on the ground, and walked back to his original post.

"Get going before I change my mind," he waved her away.

She picked up the dagger, a small rusted piece of metal with an edge that took her hours to sharpen. She tucked it back in its sheath concealed at her waist and walked away. Her ribs stung and her legs felt heavy with each passing step. She knew she would be in a lot of pain tomorrow, but despite that it was worth it. She grabbed onto the one precious heirloom in her pocket, a keepsake left behind by her mother when she passed recently. A small emerald ring bearing the sigil of house darkwyl.
