Scar looked very intimidating, and his identity was still unknown. Nobody knew who he was, so after he spoke, everyone stopped.

“Call the police, tell them there was a disturbance on the second floor!” Scar said. “Shut the door! Nobody’s fucking leaving!”

“Shut the door!” The waiter yelled down the stairs. “Don’t let anyone leave!”

“You!” Scar pointed at Kou Chen.

“What?!” Huo Ran yelled, and it whirled over like a tornado, stopping between Scar and Kou Chen. “Don’t you fucking dare touch him!”

Scar looked at him, and a couple seconds later, he said: “Patch this kid up.”

Huo Ran stared back at him silently.

He inwardly breathed a sigh of relief.

Wei Chaoren snapped out of it and ran over, “Kou Chen! Are you okay? Where are you hurt?”

The girl ran back up the stairs and squeezed past Scar. Before he realized what was going on, she had already raised the metal tray in her hands and smacked one of the guys with it.

“Bastard!” She cursed loudly as she smacked the slightly stunned guy again. “I know who sent you here! Piece of goddamn trash!”

“Who’s this?” Scar pointed at her. “Get her away!”

“Zhou Ning! What are you doing?!” Wei Chaoren quickly ran over and pulled her away, taking the tray from her.

“Tell this to your piece of trash!” Zhou Ning pointed at the three guys. “I don’t care if he’s my boyfriend or not, even if he is, it’s none of his damn business! I know who he is! And! Don’t any of you dare run after what you did today! Don’t you dare! You can all sit in jail!”

Huo Ran didn’t hear what Zhou Ning said after that, because Kou Chen was finally coming back to it a little. He felt behind his head.

“Fu…ck.” His voice trembled slightly.

Huo Ran knew that if there weren’t so many people around, if they weren’t in the middle of a serious situation, Kou Chen would be screaming for sure.

“I’m gonna die, my head was nearly blown open! Ahhhhh! It hurts! It cracked my skull!”

…At that thought, Huo Ran quickly felt his head again, pressing down gently to make sure his skull wasn’t cracked.

Kou Chen gritted his teeth and hissed before squeezing out a single word: “Fuck?”

“Your skull is fine,” Huo Ran whispered. “Don’t worry.”

“Fuck off.” Kou Chen glared at him.

A female staff came up with a little first-aid kit and knelt down by Kou Chen. “Let me see, we’ll bandage it to stop the bleeding first and then we’ll get you to the hospital.”

“I can do it.” Kou Chen protected his head with a look of fear, like the woman was gonna press down on his head the next second.

The woman simply opened up the kit and nudged it towards him: “Can you…”

“I’ll do it.” Huo Ran grabbed the disinfectant and bandages with practiced familiarity. He never got beat so badly when he went camping, but everyone gets scrapes and bruises, so he knows the basics.

He got everything he needed, and then he heard yelling from the other side, along with Wei Chaoren cursing. When he and Kou Chen looked, the three guys that were originally frozen in their place were gone, and the couple on the balcony screamed.

“What!” Huo Ran pushed Kou Chen back down as he tried to get up. “Stay here and don’t move!”

After doing that, he jumped up and ran over to the balcony.

“What?!” Wei Chaoren almost fell off in his shock. Then he quickly hauled himself up and ran over. “Kou Chen! Kou Chen!”

“Get off!” Huo Ran pointed at Zhou Ning.

“He really cracked his skull?” Zhou Ning hugged the railing, nearly choking on sobs. “Call an ambulance! Hurry!”

“It’s not cracked, not cracked,” Huo Ran said. “But it’s bleeding, I don’t know how bad it is.”

Halfway through his sentence, he remembered that Kou Chen’s wound still hasn’t been dealt with, so he turned back and shouted at her: “Don’t jump, if you break a leg you’re gonna be the one needing an ambulance.”

Kou Chen’s wound wasn’t that big. Huo Ran disinfected it, and saw that it was about five centimetres long.

Then he tied a piece of gauze to the spot with some bandages wrapped around Kou Chen’s head, and finished off with a bow.

The bow wasn’t on purpose, he just had the habit of tying everything with a bow. It was probably because he worked so hard to finally learn how to do it in kindergarten.

“It doesn’t hurt that much anymore.” Kou Chen gritted his teeth.

Huo Ran thinks that that was Kou Chen’s way to tell him that he’ll start screaming in pain if he doesn’t stop right now. He nodded, “Okay, I’m done. I don’t see any other cuts. We’ll go to the hospital first.”

“Wasn’t the police called?” Wei Chaoren said. “Those guys ran away, what are we supposed to tell them?”

“Police my ass.” Somebody said from behind them.

Huo Ran suddenly remembered that Scar and two of the store staff were standing there the whole time.

He quickly turned around and saw Scar right behind him.

“I didn’t call the police,” Scar said. “I don’t know what happened, what if you guys were the ones that caused it? You’re all students, right? How are supposed to explain that to your school and your parents?”

“It wasn’t us!” Wei Chaoren said. “We don’t even know what happened!”

“You can call the police if you want,” Scar said. “We have security cameras. I can find them.”

“There’s nobody we can’t find in this area.” The male staff said.

“Oh,” Huo Ran nodded.

“Can we… leave?” The couple from the balcony walked over.

“Leave your phone numbers.” The waiter grabbed a little notepad that was hung on the wall for guests to leave messages. “In case we need you to testify something if the police asks our San-ge.”

After the couple left, Huo Ran supported Kou Chen and they stood up. Blood was all over the back collar of Kou Chen’s shirt, and it looked pretty scary. Huo Ran felt really bad for him. He glanced at that San-ge: “Thank you sir, we’ll…”

“Pay up first. Qing-er, go assess the damage. “San-ge got out a cigarette.

The male staff grabbed a lighter and lit his smoke for him, and then he walked around the floor before reporting: “One tray.”

“Is that it?” San-ge looked at him.

“…Two chairs.” He pointed down.

Huo Ran paused for a second before going to pick the chair up. “How is it broken?”

“It fell.” San-ge waved him off. “Eight hundred. You can leave after you pay. The food you just ordered is on the house.”

“San-ge,” The staff whispered. “They’re just students… Is eight hundred too much?”

“Ask that kid.” San-ge pointed at Kou Chen, and then he left for the stairs. “You see his shoes?”

“Pay,” Kou Chen said.

“I’ll do it.” Wei Chaoren grabbed his phone.

“Seriously?” Kou Chen frowned. He put a hand on his head and slowly walked down the stairs. “Don’t go back and forth on this, just get this over with and leave.”

“Scan the code?” The girl at the counter said. After Kou Chen paid, she handed Kou Chen a card. “This is our membership card. There’s already six hundred on it, and you get fifty for every three hundred you spend, so there’s a total of seven hundred on it right now.”

“What?” Kou Chen looked at her.

“I don’t know,” She said. “The boss’ orders.”

“…Did he just force us to spend at his store?” Kou Chen was a little shocked.

“I guess?” She said. “You’re not the first one either. Besides, you always need boba. And we have lots of desserts here too. Please come often.”

Kou Chen stared at her for a long while. “Wow.”

When they walked out the door, Kou Chen suddenly patted himself up and down: “Where’s my cup!”

“Here, here!” Huo Ran quickly waved the black box in front of him. “It was on the first floor, it’s fine.”

“Ah,” Kou Chen still had his hand on his head. “Hold it for me.”

“Let’s get a cab to the hospital,” Wei Chaoren got his phone. “Does he need stitches? Or a scan, it better not be a concussion…”

“Stitches?” Kou Chen’s voice trembled. “No way.”

“Call the cab, Chaoren,” Huo Ran said, and then he looked at Kou Chen. “Scalp stitches don’t hurt, relax.”

“How do you know?” Kou Chen stared at him.

“I’ve gotten them before,” Huo Ran said. “They don’t hurt!”

Kou Chen paused, and then he raised an eyebrow and raised his voice: “Who hit you?!”

“I fell,” Huo Ran said. “It wasn’t a fight, and I didn’t cause trouble.”

“How?” Kou Chen immediately questioned.

“Just…” Huo Ran hesitated. “I… was on the monkey bars, and I hung upside down… but my leg slipped and I fell on my head.”

“Holy shit.” Kou Chen looked shocked. “Are you stupid?”

“Watch it,” Huo Ran poked his chest. “You just got smacked with a pot.”

“The cab’s here!” Wei Chaoren said. “Worry about your head first! Hurry up!”

“You guys don’t have to come,” Kou Chen looked at Wei Chaoren after he got in the car. “Finish your date first.”

“Fuck, what do you mean?” Wei Chaoren said. “Why would I not come, if it weren’t fucking for me…”

“It was my fault,” Zhou Ning said quietly. “I’m sorry.”

“Forget it.” Kou Chen waved his hand. “Huo Ran will come with me, you guys can do whatever you want. Leave, cry, continue your date.”

Huo Ran got in and closed the door, and told the driver to set off. About a hundred metres off, Huo Ran saw that he was laughing.

“Why are you laughing?” Huo Ran asked curiously.

“How did you fall like that?” Kou Chen touched his own head and laughed. “If that never happened, maybe you’ll be taller now?”

“I’m still growing anyways,” Huo Ran glared. “I’m heading for two metres!”

Kou Chen laughed even harder. “Fuck, no more, it’s making my head hurt… it hurts…”

“Stop laughing!” Huo Ran yelled, slightly worried.

Kou Chen leaned onto him and stilled his face, but his body with still shaking with laughter.

As they were waiting for a doctor in the ER, Kou Chen gave Huo Ran his task. “Call my dad.”

“Why?” Huo Ran asked.

“Tell him someone hit me and I had to go to the hospital,” Kou Chen said. Kou Chen said. “It’s ‘someone hit me’, not ‘I was in a fight’. Tell him.”

“And then?” Huo Ran asked. “Will he be worried? Can’t you get your stitches first, and then tell him after?”

“Mainly because we’re gonna miss lunch for sure,” Kou Chen said. “Tell him first. And I wanna see if he’ll worry or not.”

“…Okay,” Huo Ran nodded and grabbed his phone. “I’ll call him.”

When he picked up, Huo Ran felt a little nervous. He sucked in a breath: “Hello?”

“Huo Ran?” Kou Chen’s dad asked.

“Hi, Uncle Kou.” Huo Ran swallowed. “It’s like this, something happened… Kou Chen… somebody hit Kou Chen…”

“What?” His dad raised his voice.”

“He wasn’t fighting, someone hit him! He’s hurt,” Huo Ran quickly said, “We’re…”

“He actually got hit?! He’s hurt?” His dad was shocked.

“Yeah,” Huo Ran cleared his throat. He didn’t do anything.”

“Where are you?” Kou Chen’s dad yelled. “I’ll be right there with my people! I need to fucking see who has the guts to hurt my son!”
