Our first love revenge was complete Part 1I had done a lot of thinking over those ten days. About why first love was so special.
To begin with, things done for the first time were special.
There were decorations awarded for new scientific discoveries, while the first sunrise on New Year's was considered to be an auspicious event.
It was easy to make the first time for anything, not just love, out to be special. And as it was written in so many stories, first love was often seen as one of the special events that took place in a person's life.
Stacking those special things on top of one another, first love still distinguished itself amongst the extraordinary. Perhaps indeed it was only natural that first love would be such a weighty thing.
"Yo, Sueharu. All prepared?"
The entrance to the school was decked out in the spirit of the cultural festival. Enshrined on its facade was a signboard owned by the student council with energetically written words on it, a staple used every year.
"I guess."
It was through that school gate that Tetsuhiko and I passed.
Today was the one-day long cultural festival. As a result of the "Confession Festival", Hozumino High School lay immersed in its own unique atmosphere.
Wherever a restless male student appeared you could be sure he was planning to confess. They were in the midst of preparing themselves to push on and face the public ridicule of the entire school.
Those souls were not to be disturbed. They were only to be cheered on silently from within our hearts. Those men, were the true protagonists of the cultural festival.
"… Oh?"
It could have been a coincidence, or perhaps really an inevitability. I locked eyes with Abe, who had just finished talking to a friend.
Abe spoke after breaking into a cool smile.
"Why, if it isn't the dumbspicable duo."
"…? Dumbspicable… duo?"
As my mind was beset by question marks, Tetsuhiko spoke first.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Kai Tetsuhiko, the despicable one. Wow, I'm so honoured that you know of not just Sueharu, but of me as well."
"What do you mean you're the despicable one?! Is that supposed to mean I'm the dumb one then?!"
Tetsuhiko blinked for a second, then sighed.
"Huh? You didn't realise?"
"What, is that name supposed to be popular or something?"
As I asked, Abe laughed slyly.
"Only a small portion… of the townspeople know."
"Isn't that just a roundabout way of saying it's super famous in school?!"
"Oh, you finally realised? Good for you, at least you weren't dumb enough to miss that out."
"Good for you, Mr. Dummy. Senpai's praising you, you know?"
I knocked away Tetsuhiko's arms which came in to slap me lovingly on the shoulders, then hugged my head with mine.
"For real, could you just cut it out?! I don't have your mental toughness so this is making me really depressed, okay?!"
"Just give up, man - this is reality."
"Ah-, Ah-, I can't hear you-! What I can't hear doesn't exist-!"
Abe's eyes narrowed as he looked down on me while I tried to avert mine from reality. His scornful gaze set alight embers of rage within my chest.
"Hehe, keep running away from reality if you must. Hm, yes, perhaps it would be best for you if you did."
"What did you say-?!"
"Because today, I think there will be something that will make you want to run away from reality even more. As much as possible, I would like for you to see it, but well, I'm no demon. It would be wise for you to run away now with your tail tucked between your legs."
There were a few girls walking over from the school entrance. Abe probably thought being heard would affect his popularity, as he then approached and whispered into my ear.
"Come, you should leave while you still can, Mr. Dummy-"
Seriously, it was incredibly condescending. His crisp exterior made his disposition even worse.
Argh, how was I supposed to put this feeling into words?
… Oh, that's right. That would do. That is what I would say.
I grabbed Abe's wrist as he tried to walk past while whispering, and forcibly wrenched him to turn and face me.
"Abe-senpai."
I gave him the most disdainful look I could in retaliation for all the humiliation I had suffered earlier. I pinched my nose and snarled with my lips insolently as a third-rate hooligan might.
"I hope you're looking forward to the 'Confession Festival' today. -I'm gonna make you cry."
Abe brushed my arm away and licked his lips.
"That's my line, former child actor prodigy, Maru Sueharu-kun."
Abe left with a derisive smile on his face.
As I glared at Abe's back Tetsuhiko placed his elbow on my shoulder.
"We won't lose this, Sueharu."
"'Course. I never had any intentions of losing in the first place."
And so the curtain on my cultural festival opened.
