The Treasure Chest and The Toolbox Part 3

A long time ago, there lived an introverted girl.

She did everything clumsily, and lacked self-confidence. For those reasons she was bullied in school, and at some point she stopped going entirely.

During the day she was always alone in her room, so she immersed herself in stories. Her father had bookshelves at home, so she was never short of books to read. Reading was the only time she didn't feel lonely.

At night, there was the drama she looked forward to every week. The young boy who served as the protagonist of the drama was a cowardly and unmotivated lazy fellow. However, he matured steadily under the harsh circumstances of the show, eventually achieving his goal of finding his mother.

The drama had pretty average viewership at the outset, but that increased dramatically thanks to the exceptional acting of the young boy who played the main character and a script that made many both laugh and cry. It even became a social phenomenon. Especially of note had been the dance performed by that youth at the conclusion of the series - a splendid display for the future now having arrived at the final episode, a revolutionary and striking show of "coolness" by just an elementary schooler. Derived from the main character's name "Hanyuu", the dance became known thereafter as the "Nyuu-kun dance", while a big craze developed over the young boy's sharp movements.

The girl became an instant fan, her heart throbbing while watching the great work of the boy whose stardom rose through the course of the drama.

The girl's father was the president of a company sponsoring the drama. And for his reclusive daughter, he prepared a present.

"Hi there-, I'm Maru Sueharu!"

While they were filming near the girl's house, her father invited and brought the boy who played the main character over for lunch.

The girl was beyond ecstatic!

The boy quickly signed an autograph after she begged him for one! The amiable boy invited her over to the filming grounds, even giving her a tour! They also played together while waiting for his turn to perform! When they finally had to split up that day, he said that they should play sometime together again!

When the girl was together with the boy, she was most excited when they talked about stories. Being an actor, the boy knew many different ones, while the girl herself had scavenged for quite a few during her seclusion, so that they both had extensive knowledge exceeding their ages.

After playing together multiple times, in the course of their conversations, the girl began to have a dream.

"I'm going to write a story, Suu-chan, so I want you to play the main character."

The boy nodded immediately.

"Sure! I'll be looking forward to your story, Shirou!"

That "promise" changed the girl's way of life.

The drama which her father's company sponsored concluded, and the boy himself became busy, so that he stopped coming over to her house.

But still the girl continued writing her story.

She rewrote it over and over again, and by the time she had completed a single work, her father's company was once again sponsoring a drama with the boy as the main character.

Now I can show him-

It was with that expectation that the girl asked her father to bring the boy over.

Her father said he understood, but he never managed to fulfill his promise.

At first he would say "Sorry, I couldn't bring him because his schedule has gotten a little tight," with a dark expression, and this continued for another two or three times before finally he said, "I won't be able to bring him over for a while."

It was a huge shock to the girl who had looked forward to their meeting so so expectantly. So emotionally invested in him, the girl believed of her own accord that the boy no longer liked her, and at the same time developed an intense hatred for him.

The girl finally realised that her emotions for him had been "first love".

The girl resolved to prove herself to the boy.

She would become strong, pretty and famous, and prove herself to him. But if and when he finally turned around it would already be too late.

-I'm going to become the finest woman, and make you regret not coming to see me!

"I'm such an idiot… I didn't know anything… Why didn't you tell me anything earlier, Suu-chan…?"

Tears fell from the eyes of the girl who had now grown up. They fell onto the handwritten scenario she held in her hand.

-senpai is scheduled to serenade and dance a song for S-chan at the "Confession Festival" during his turn.

(Have senpai acknowledge that he is performing the "Nyuu-kun dance" – completed)

-Here the main character makes his intrusion. They both sing competitively, and he outperforms senpai.

(senpai is likely to compete seriously. But if he able to properly show his strength the true main character will emerge victorious.)

-Going along with the flow, the main character confesses to S-chan, and S-chan chooses him.

(This is a lie, instead S-chan will reveal to the main character how she used to be called Shiro, and brutally reject him in front of everyone)

(But if in spite of that he refuses to give up and continues confessing repeatedly then… it can't be helped then… I'll allow him to date me…)

From there the girl made a correction to an earlier part.

-Going along with the flow, the main character confesses to S-chan, and S-chan chooses him.

(This is a lie, instead S-chan will reveal to the main character how she used to be called Shiro, and brutally reject him in front of everyone)

(But if in spite of that he refuses to give up and continues confessing repeatedly then… it can't be helped then… I'll allow him to date me…)

(I still really love you!)

"I love you, Suu-chan… I love you, Suu-chan… I love you, Suu-chan… I love you, Suu-chan… I love you, Suu-chan… I love you, Suu-chan…"

Her chest grew tight as she so whispered, her tears still falling.

"You were so cool, Suu-chan."

Unable to contain the emotions within her chest, they turned into words which spilled forth from her mouth.

"Suu-chan had such an incredibly cruel experience, but he didn't make any excuses for himself. He didn't blame anyone. It was so painful he collapsed, but he still wanted to fight on. I would never be able to do that. He was exactly like how he used to be before, so dazzlingly strong… yet I hated him so much for all this time, and once again I…"

In the past she would feel happy just thinking of him. But when she did now there was an additional feeling of unease.

"Were - the two of you listening?"

Leaving Sueharu behind in the infirmary, standing outside were his friend Kai Tetsuhiko and his childhood friend Shida Kuroha.

Seeing Kuroha's expression, the girl understood. She knew everything there was to know.

So she fired a warning shot.

"Shidsan… I won't lose to you-"

The girl left immediately. She did not want to admit her own fear even as her hands trembled after issuing such a modest threat.

The girl could not be calm when she thought of Kuroha.

Kuroha knew Sueharu before she did, had been around him more than she had, and was far closer to him than she was.

A mixture of fear, a desire not to lose, and pain entangled her mind.

"First love truly is a curse, Suu-chan-"

And then the girl cried again.

Her name had also been derived in association with the clover.

In kanji, the word "clover" was written as "Shirotsumekusa" - and so thus was the girl called Kachi Shirokusa.
