WRECKED 30 29

Kuku was lonely. Mustapha was away in a secluded place for the next three weeks. She couldn't think of an excuse when a week ago, Anaya suggested she went back to Abuja with Afsat. Now, Afsat had gone on a trip to Saudi Arabia with some friends and Kuku was all alone in the big house. She got invitations for lunches and parties with some friends, but she was still lonely without Mustapha, and sneaking into bed with one of the guests at a party she attended didn't stop her missing him. She spent most afternoons at Asokoro, but sometimes Anthony made an excuse not to see her. She lived with great fear and guilt. Fear of being found out and guilt for putting Mustapha in a dreadful state. The guiltier and tormented she felt, the more the ravening sexual need began to dominate her.

She had a spare afternoon and decided to stay home, frightened and isolated. Afsat had assured her that Mustapha would be 'cured' by the time he came home. No more drinking. No more miserable scenes when he accused her and she denied. He loved her. She loved him. But love wasn't enough. Her tears flowed in self-pity and self-hate. She crouched on her big bed, hunched like an animal at bay before the truth of what her life was going to be. Mustapha wasn't going to be enough. No one would be; she was doomed to deceive the person she loved best in the whole world. Her mobile phone rang. She stopped, shocked into reality by the sound. She let it ring, then decided to check the display. With a cry of joy, she picked it up.

"Stella, darling?" It was one of her best friends. The former Stella Manze, now happily married and living in Kaduna.

"Kuku, how are you? It's been ages I've seen you."

Kuku answered, her voice a little thick, but bright and enthusiastic. Yes, she was all alone. Mustapha travelled. Oh, how lovely. She'd love to come down and spend a couple of days till he came back. No, she had nothing arranged at all. She could call a cab and drive down that evening if Stella could bear it.

She packed as quickly as she could. Oh, how nice it would be to see Stella again, Kuku thought. Her husband too. He was nice. How wonderful to get out of this house? She was trembling as she packed. Still trembling when she ran out of the house. Then she was in the car, driving to her friend's home. Life was sweet again.
