Oscar Chapter 1.1

ACEDIA ( 나태 )

There was a wind coming from somewhere, carrying the scent of flowers. Annette's hair fluttered around her, as she sat on top of the old wall, waving her bare feet around.

How can it be so beautiful?

Annette took a deep breath in admiration.

The fresh smell of the green field that touched the dark blue sky spread deep inside her body. A small butterfly fluttered over the colorful flowers embroidered on the grass.

Nothing touched the ripe, red fruits on a large tree. However, small birds that nestled between the branches were just chirping, opening their mouths to their mother that was feeding them. A place where everything that comes into view is peaceful and beautiful.

This land was a beautiful place worthy of the status of heaven that humans desperately wanted to go to, but could not enter. Heaven was a space where only angels who worshiped God could exist.

“What a waste.”

Annette whispered in her mouth and smiled dimly. It would be nice if more people could come to visit such a beautiful place.

It was clear that if Kamael, her twin brother, listened, she would be treated as an immature angel who did not know God's will. However, it was regrettable that only a few angels were allowed to see this dazzlingly beautiful scene.

“Annette.”

How does Kamael have the best timing when she is thinking deeply like this? Although it was possible to read the thoughts of other angels with her mind, Annette was curious since this was not the first time this had happened.

“Yes, Kamael.”

Annette, who was sweeping the hair that blocked her view, suddenly stopped moving her hands and turned her head toward the side where her name was called. The blond haired figure, who was getting closer with every step, hair sparkling as if it were brighter than the sun.

“I was wondering where you were.”

An armored Kamael came to her with a small sigh. Wearing armor that displayed a strong body in comparison to a neutrally beautiful face, a golden band wrapped around his sleek muscular forearm, and emitting cool blue fire flowers on his back. He looked well-matched as if he had adjusted himself with his position as the head of the border guards.

“I came out because the wind was nice. I've been reading in the castle all day, and it's frustrating, and it's boring because I've read all the books I have.”

Annette's life was monotonous. When she was in the castle, she learned the virtues of an angel by reading books, and when she came out to get some air from time to time, it was her main daily routine to take care of the garden. Recently, she had to spend less time alone in the garden due to his concerns.

“It's dangerous to stay out there for a long time.”

“Huh. Even though you're here?”

As Annette looked up at him while sitting with her eyes closed, Kamael sighed as she pouted, and stepped closer to her.

“Then try to get away with it again.”

“Well it's because the leader of the garrison*, the best in heaven, is with me, I don't know what I have to worry about.”

(T/N: a body of troops stationed in a fortified place. the place where such troops are stationed. any military post, especially a permanent one.)

“You know it's not convincing to talk to me like that, right?”

While the young lady was doing so, a subtle smile was spreading on Kamael's face, which looked just like her own. Seeing his smile made Annette happy, too.

“I mean it.”

Though born with the same appearance at one o'clock on the same day, Kamael was an angel who was far more capable than her. His three pairs of wings, gracefully extending toward the sky, were so large and magnificent that Annette's two humble wings were incomparable.

“Thanks to you, I can relax, Kamael.”

“It's perfect to be pointed out as insolent when others hear it.”

“Nitpicker.”

“I'm just worried about you, idiot.”

Kamael looked at her with a smile. Annette was also well aware that he was genuinely concerned about her. From some point on, it became natural for him to take care of her.

Unlike Kamael, who was selected as a border guard as soon as he became an adult, Annette was slow to become an adult, unlike ordinary angels. It was only a hundred days ago that her back, which showed no signs of developing wings, gradually hurt, and a pair of small wings finally revealed its traces.

Kamael's straight blonde hair, stretched to his waist, overflowed with toughness, while Annette's thin, groveling hair looked as light as if the color would disappear in the sun. Annette looked concerned and smiled comfortably at Kamael.

“I knew I'd get caught on your way out anyways and would have to go back in. So please just ignore it this time.”

“You're so arbitrary.”

Kamael sighed as if it was absurd, but his eyes were soft, contrary to the criticizing tone. The wind shook her rich hair. He looked at the scene for a moment and suddenly reached out.  In an instant, Annette's hair was gathered together and tied, and a pure white flower blossomed in the middle. Annette looked at him and smiled with her eyes.

“I'm arbitrary, but do others know that you have such a friendly personality?”

“They don't have to know.”

Kamael's hands touched the end of her hair, which had already been tied together. A strand of thin hair got tangled gently on his finger. He slipped it out. Kamael's voice died down with a richer low note.

“I just need to be sweet to my beautiful sister.”

The border guards who managed the boundary between heaven and the human world, were the sixth class of the angels that Kamael also belonged to. It was protected by the people who resisted demons and were wary of their invasion at the forefront of the heavens.

Maybe it was because of the influence of the position or because it was originally a group of such angels, but the sixth class of angels were famous for their upright and powerful nature. Kamael, who is in charge of leading the team there, was notoriously strict and cool, was actually recorded in the book.

“Shall we send a message to the chief to rewrite the angelic genealogy (Lord: four of the nine-tier angels, who have a mission to determine their role and status in heaven when they become saints)? The heavens should know what a soft angel you are.”

“Do you want to be treated like an idiot?”

Kamael smiled quietly and looked at her with soft eyes. Annette, who looked at him, shrugged her shoulders.

“I don't think it's going to hurt a lot because I'm still being treated like a fool.”

Kamael's golden eyebrows, which fell neatly, moved inward together. His big hand, touching her soft hair, slowly swept her forehead soothingly.

“You'll soon be in a world of luxury, Annette, you don't have to be impatient.”

“I know it's not urgent.”

Annette shook her head as if she was relieved, looking at Kamael and being cautious with her expressions. She was aware that angels born around the same time as them were performing their duties in heaven earlier and becoming Saints.

She also knew that due to her slow growth, the time to receive the angelic cultivation was getting late. However, it was due to her lack of dignity that she had to live in a castle without becoming an official angel. This meant that it was not the fault of her twin brother, Kamael. But why did Kamael always look so sorry for her as if it was his fault.

Annette didn't want to bother Kamael anymore, who was always worried about her.

“It is said that if a certain period of time has passed after you became a Saint, you can eventually become a guardian angel and go down to the human world. Did you know that?”

Louis, who was a guardian angel and worked as a messenger of Kamael, brought up the story, but Kamael only listened to her with steady eyes.

“Therefore?”

“Don't you think that's probably more appropriate for my personality?”

“Yes, that's a good idea. Then I can put down the position of leader and leave for the human world to protect you. I will be your guardian angel while you act as the guardian angel for the foolish.”

Kamael spewed out dangerous words with a gentle face. He didn't even blink. Annette, who was trying to continue excitedly, was surprised and quieted.

“What?”

Annette, who lived in the castle, knew how much respect and trust he received as the head of the Sixth-tier Angels. If he* said he* would quit his* post to take charge of the work of the lowest angels, he* could know what would happen to heaven without even having to think about it. (T/N: The author is taking about Kamael who is a male, But in this part the author doesn't specify his gender since he's playing as a glorified being.)

“Because I'm sure I can't fall asleep for a second because I'm worried about you. It's natural for me to go with you.”

He felt a slight heat in his hand that was wrapped around one cheek. Annette looked at Kamael quietly with her big, drooping eyes.

“Don't say such a joke, Kamael.”

“Do you think I'm kidding?”

Annette realized that she had said something unnecessary. Kamael, who had special concerns about his sister, was really able to do the things he said. She continued, speaking in a hurry.

“It doesn't really matter to me. The only thing that attracted me to the guardian angel story was that I was curious about the other worlds outside the heavenly world.”

“I'll tell them to triple the amount of books they bring into the castle. Including books from the middle world.”

“…Thank you.”

A long sigh of remorse came out of Kamael's lips.

“I should have paid more attention to you. I can't believe you made Louis mention such dangerous information.”

“No. I had a sudden thought. An angel who is curious like me will probably be eliminated as a guardian angel?”

Annette shook her hand and laughed playfully, but she couldn't stop looking bitter at Kamael's face. And she knew how to make Kamael smile with a bittersweet face.

“I'm good enough now, Kamael.”

“Really?”

Kamael looked at her and asked back in a low voice.

“Of course.”

Only then did Annette nod her head lightly, and Kamael's beautiful face slowly gave a picture-like smile.

“So am I.”

As expected, Kamael looked much better with a smiling face.

“Now is my favorite time, Annette.”

“Meaning?”

Annette shrugged and jokingly pushed her brother next to her. Kamael, who didn't move because of the difference in their physique, put his arms around her body and then kissed her head.

“Then, shall my beautiful sister go home now?”
