Not So Lonesome Road 48 Freeside

In the distance I could see the massive junk fence that surrounded Freeside. The East gate which was one of the only two entrances was wide open with dozens of people flowing in and out.

There was a large group of Kings who were a gang of Elvis impersonators that ran Freeside, offering their 'protection' to anyone who pays 100 caps.

As well as all kinds of different vendors selling all kinds of random junk.

As we waded through the crowd people moved out of our way. We were clearly different than the average person coming through here. Our decent clothes and armor as well as the flying robot made people pay attention.

We were mostly ignored while going inside with only a single person coming up to try and sell us something.

I shooed him away and we headed inside, and it was even more disgusting than I expected.

The streets were filled with trash and what I really hoped were pieces of rotting food. People who were clearly high as a kite wandered around aimlessly, either babbling to themselves or puking on something. Of all the places I've seen since coming to this world this was the worst, except of course for Nipton. Nothing would ever be worse than that.

As much as I wished we could have gone straight to The Strip and skip over Freeside, we couldn't. There were a couple ways to get into The Strip and we couldn't do any of them right now.

The first way is to have more than 2000 caps and since there were four of us we'd need over 8000.

The second way is to exploit a mistake in the Securitron's guarding the gates A.I. but, I wasn't confident in making it work for all of us.

The third and final option as well as the one I was going to choose was using an NCR passport to get in. And there were two different ways to get an NCR passport.

You either get it as a favor from the king after completing a couple quests or pay for a fake one to be made at a place call Mick & Ralph's.

Again I wasn't sure if my favor from The King would be worth four passports. So, I figured that it would be for the best if we do both.

I would do the quest for the kings while everyone else does other quests to make enough money for the passports. And if The King actually does give me four of them for free then we just get to keep the extra money.

Though I actually had another reason to send everyone out on quests. It didn't matter too much at the time because it was barely any EXP but, I learned that if my companions complete a quest for me I still counts as me completing it. And with all the quests in Freeside I felt like I could finally push myself to Level 20.

I explained to them that to get into The Strip we'd need more money to buy passports, and that we'd need to do a couple jobs in town to make enough money.

Veronica agreed knowing how hard it was to get into The Strip. But, Cass and Boone stopped me, apperently they both already had NCR passports.

It had completely slipped my mind that the both of them were originally from California. Now we only needed two passport and we could get at least one of them for free!

Even knowing they already had passports I asked them if they'd still be willing to do the jobs.

They agreed saying that it's never a bad idea to have more money.

I pointed Cass and Veronica to the Atomic Wrangler bar and casino, and told them that I knew they had a couple jobs they needed done. Before they went off I grabbed Veronica and whispered into her ear. I told her to make sure to ask if they had any depts they needed collected and to leave before Cass gets her job.

The though of Cass going all around Freeside trying to recruit prostitutes for the Wrangler made me laugh. She'd probably murder me later but, it'd be worth it.

As for Boone if he'd be okay being a bounce at the Silver Rush. He knew about what happened to Cass's caravan and was a bit uneasy about it.

I assured him that we wouldn't take them down in the not too distant future, and that it wasn't a bad idea to get a little money out of them first. I also told him about the one guy who was going to try as and sneak in with a bunch of C4.

He reluctantly agreed and went on his way, I wiped the sweat off my brow. I knew Cass was definitely going to kill me for that but, I really wanted the EXP. Now all that was left was for me to head to the Kings.

I didn't head there right away though, I had something I wanted to do while everyone was gone.

I walked the all around Freeside looking for a specific person and kept my eye out in case anyone tried to mug me, O ended up firing my guns twice.

The first time was when some junkie ran at me with a kitchen knife.

And the second time was when a group of children armed with sticks and bats were chasing a giant rat around, and of course I had to use Ratslayer to kill it. Once it was dead the children immediately began digging in to eat.

I didn't like how skinny they all looked and that they were just gulping down all that raw meat like it was candy and vowed to make sure stuff like that didn't happen anymore.

I eventually did find who I was looking for it was a little kid chasing a girl down with a toy gun and making pew pew sounds.

I stopped him and asked him where he got that gun and offered to buy it. He said he just found it lying around and would only sell it for 1,000 caps. I told him I was willing to pay it but, asked him if he would be alright walking around Freeside with all that money. After all not everyone in town was as nice as I was.

His face went pale and he knocked the price down to 20 caps and I gladly paid.

Looking at the red and yellow gun in my hand I could help but, laugh it really did look like a toy. And after examining it for a second I found out why he hadn't accidentally blow up his little girl friend. The Euclid C Finder actually had a safety on it just like any other gun, and the kid just didn't know about it.

I tucked the C Finder away into my backpack and smiled knowing I had a new trump card.
