A beginner wind spell.
It was my first time trying one, so I wasn't able to perform it well.

Since the method of concentrating was different from both flame and ice magic, I got mixed up and couldn't do it properly.
It was like taking the knife and fork I've been able to handle fine until now, and then trying to switch hands. It was that kind of confusing feeling.

However, that wasn't a problem for me at all.
Learning new things was always like that at the beginning.
Without any intrusive thoughts, or pretty much any thoughts at all, I concentrated solely on practicing the Wind Shot.

It had been about one hour since I'd started, and then……

“I did it.”

In front of where my hand was pointed, a section of shrubbery shook violently.
That wasn't a natural wind. It had been my magic.

It seems I was also able to learn wind magic. Now I just had to keep on repeating it.

“……Goodness. Young Master?”
“Huh?”

A voice cut into my consciousness, and I turned around, surprised.
When I did, I saw a maid glaring at me angrily.

“Wh, what is it?”
“I have been calling you for some time. It is dangerous to be in a place like this all by yourself. In accordance with His Excellency's instructions, the beasts in these woods have not been exterminated, and there are poisonous insects and snakes as well.”
“Oh, but I actually wasn't alo—“

I started to speak and looked over my shoulder, but…… The man wasn't there.

“Huh?”
“What is the matter?”
“Huh? Oh, um, nevermind……”

I looked back and forth between the spot where the man had been sitting, and the maid's bewildered face.

He was there until a second ago…… Where'd he go?
Don't tell me… He was a ghost?

If that was the case, then…… It'd probably be best to pretend it never happened.

“There was a man here.”

If I said that, she'd definitely look at me weird.

I thought it over for a moment, then changed the subject.

“Anyway, what did you want from me?”
“Ah, yes. I came to bring this to you.”
“It's…… a grimoire?”

The maid had brought with her a single grimoire.
Compared to the ones I'd been using until now, it looked remarkably old. “Elementary Summoning Magic” was written on the front.

“His Excellency asked me to give you this.”
“I see. Thank you. Tell my father I'll thank him directly later.”
“As you wish.”

The maid bowed deeply, then turned on her heels and left.

I watched her leave, and the second she was out of sight……

“A grimoire from your father? Perfect timing, eh?”
“Uwaah!”

I was so surprised I think my heart skipped several beats.
When I turned around, in the exact same spot and the exact same pose, I could once again see the man sitting there.

“Wh, where did you go?”
“I didn't go anywhere. It was magic. There's a spell called “Invisibility” that, well, turns you invisible.”
“I see……”

So there's even magic like that, I see.

“That spell's in the ring too. It's really hard though, so you should take your time learning it.”
“Okay!”
“Now then, if this is a place where people are likely to show up, then I can't stay for much longer.”
“Huh? B, but……”

What did he mean by that?

“I'll teach you one last thing. Open up that grimoire to any page, it doesn't matter which.”
“Okay.”
“Then, try following what's written in the grimoire, but use the ring to actually do it.”
“Ah…… I think I get it.”

I opened the grimoire to the page where the first spell was written, and looked it over.
How to summon the low-grade fire spirit, Salamander.
All of the details were written inside.

Whenever I tried a spell for the first time, it always took around an hour before anything actually happened…… That's what I thought, so I was surprised.

The effect was instantaneous.
I jumped in shock, then stared at the ring.

“It went in…… right?”
“Wh, what?”
“It's nothing special, the magicpedia just imported the contents of the grimoire. You can think of that ring as having an infinite number of blank pages left over.”
“I, I see……”
“It just imported the info though. It won't have any effect beyond that. Still, makes it easier to carry everything, right?”

The man grinned.

“Yeah! This'll help a lot!”
“Now try importing some others.”
“Okay!”

One by one, I imported the remaining three summoning spells from the grimoire Father had sent me.

Low-grade wind spirit, Sylph.
Low-grade water spirit, Undine.
Low-grade earth spirit, Gnome.

All I was doing was copying over the pages, so it was finished quickly.

“All done…… Huh?”

When I looked up again, the man was nowhere to be seen.
He went invisible again? —– That's what I thought, but I quickly realized that wasn't the case.

‘Work hard studying magic, and let's meet again someday. P.S. Don't tell anyone about me.'

Those letters were written out on the ground just like the prime numbers had been.

I realized then that he wasn't just invisible. He wasn't there anymore at all.

“……”

I was silent as I erased the words with my foot.
I didn't know his reason, but if he said not to tell anyone, I wouldn't.

We'd only talked for a short time, all things considered, but I never even learned his name.

My conception of him was entirely that he was my teacher.

“What the! At the same time!?”

Father, who was watching me as I practiced magic, expressed his extreme shock.
Doing three at once wouldn't have been good training, since I didn't have enough magical power and one of them always disappeared right away.
So I was practicing two at once instead.

I'd been doing nothing but practice over and over with the grimoires (which basically meant the magicpedia now).
As for doing two at once, I'd gotten twice as efficient at it.

And I continued practicing.

During the day, during the night, it didn't matter. I kept training.
Gradually, my magic power grew, and it got easier and easier to do multiple spells at once.
Meanwhile, my technique got more and more efficient as well.

A month passed.

The number of spells I could do at once was five, and my repertoire had grown to one hundred.

Translator and Editor Notes:

Don't use invisibility for sexy stuff, don't use invisibility for sexy stuff, don't use invisibility for sexy stuff, don't use invisibility for sexy stuff…….. I'm begging you.

Anyway, does the dad know about the magicpedia?? That was completely glossed over but it's so important! “Liam” would have no excuse if his dad asks where he got it from. He did the simultaneous magic in front of him, and sure, that was probably spells he'd already learned to use without a grimoire, but has the dad never requested to see him practice with a grimoire like the first time? And what if he shows the dad a spell from the magicpedia, and the dad goes “Wait, we don't have any grimoires with that spell. The fuck?” If we end up completely ignoring this obvious avenue for engaging conflict, I'll be so disappointed.

Like, stuff has gone so well for “Liam” which was fine at first, but now I'm like… we need some conflict here. We've been given at least 4 seeds that conflict can grow from, but the author needs to actually WRITE IT.

It was fun for a while, but now I'm kind of over the perfect flawless life of magic we've been reading about so far. Please… please give me the conflict.
