My Noble Family is Headed For Ruin, So I May As Well Study Magic In My Free Time Chapter 11

A month passed since I'd invented the instant noodles.
I went to the woods today like usual.

In that same spot I'd long since become accustomed to, there were huge mounds of white charcoal and instant noodles piled up.

As much as the maid had been impressed by my instant noodles, the guild master of the noodle guild had been even more impressed.
Just by adding hot water, you could instantly have noodles that tasted just like the real thing, plus I could make them in any flavor imaginable (though all I'd done was have Undine remove the water from the real thing).

After hearing that, the guild master had been so impressed that he wanted to place an order for 10,000 servings and pay me the entire amount up front.

However, the deal didn't end up going through.

As soon as the guild master learned I was Liam Hamilton, fifth son of the Hamilton family, he was visibly disappointed.
That was when I learned, that unless you were the eldest son, in other words if you weren't the inheritor, then nobles weren't allowed to seek outside business prospects without the family's permission.

If I wanted to go through with this, there'd be two ways to do it.
First is to wait until I'm an adult and leave the family to be fully independent.
The second is to find a region not under the ownership of the Hamilton family, most likely very very far away, in which to conduct my business.

Those were the only two options.
[um, you're not even gonna consider just… getting the family's permission…?]

I wouldn't be able to accomplish either of those soon, so that's why I was spending my days accumulating piles of the things I make.

The reason I was making so much, is because I had a strategy in mind.

The ring my teacher had given me, this Magicpedia.
There was a single spell in there that didn't have a grade, as in elementary, intermediate, or master, indicated on it.

The name of that spell was Itembox.

“Itembox.”

When I performed the spell through the Magicpedia, a 1 square meter large box appeared in front of me.
When I popped open the box's lid, i saw that the inside was patterned with rainbow polka dots.

I took one each of the white charcoals and instant noodles from their respective piles, and put them into the box.

The white charcoal and noodles were totally swallowed up by the box.
I couldn't even see them anymore.

However, a list appeared in my mind's eye.

――――――――――――
Pure white charcoal: 84 grams
Instant noodles: 1 serving
――――――――――――

It was a list detailing the contents of the Itembox.
Then when I put one more of each inside, it showed 152 grams of white charcoal and 2 servings of instant noodles.

Then I took out one of the instant noodles.
The white charcoal stayed at 154 grams, and the noodles dropped to 1 serving.
[good lord this is tedious]

I erased the Itembox spell, then made it again.

Then, I put one of each inside again.

――――――――――――
Pure white charcoal: 61 grams
Instant noodles: 1 serving
――――――――――――

As if my earlier actions hadn't even happened, it was just showing the ones I'd put in just now.

Item box was essentially a handy spell that you could store any amount of stuff inside, and then remove those things whenever you want.
However, since I hadn't completely learned the spell yet (I was just using the material coating on the magicpedia to perform it), the contents of the box were destroyed and it was reset each time.

It was a really convenient spell, but until I learned it I wouldn't be able to make use of it at all. That's what made it a unique spell.

Even without fully learning Fireball, you could still have the result of making one.

And the other spells were essentially the same.

You couldn't let go of the grimoire.
And they took a certain time to cast.

Those two points were still a problem, but for the time being the practical results were there.

It was only Itembox which was useless, since the contents get destroyed.

I spent the next month continuing my magic training as usual.

On one side, I had 2 undines making instant noodles.
And on the other side, I had a gnome and 3 fireballs making white charcoal.

And I had the Itembox out as well.

That's right, my simultaneous magic cap had risen from 5 to 7.

While I was making the white charcoal and instant noodles, I was training Itembox at the same time.

And then……

――――――――――――
Pure white charcoal: 101 grams
Instant noodles: 1 serving
――――――――――――

“Oh?”

Even after I'd erased the Itembox, the contents hadn't vanished.

I tried erasing it and summoning it again.

――――――――――――
Pure white charcoal: 101 grams
Instant noodles: 1 serving
――――――――――――

The contents were exactly the same.
I took off my ring, my Magicpedia, and made it again.

The Itembox appeared like normal.

I'd mastered the Itembox!

I stopped everything I was doing and threw all my white charcoal and instant noodles into the Itembox one by one.

It took quite a long time, because those mounds I'd built up over a month of continuous work were pretty hefty.

――――――――――――
Pure white charcoal: 318 kilograms
Instant noodles: 1045 servings
――――――――――――

I'd put everything inside, and now they wouldn't go away even if I extinguished the spell.

The list in my head was no longer just a description of my possessions, it was a list of my available stock.

Now I could go out to sell them.

If I wanted to conduct this business no matter what, there were 2 options.
Separate from the family when I become an adult.
Or bring my merchandise to another town, outside the jurisdiction of the Hamilton family.

I had decided on the second option.
Adulthood was still a very long way off for me, after all.

But since that option involved walking really far away, I wanted to carry everything at once.
But, carrying everything at once would have been much too heavy for a child such as myself.

That's where the Itembox came in.

I left the forest and returned to the mansion.

I went back to my room, then received a pot and some hot water from a maid.
I took out one serving of instant noodles from my Itembox, soaked them in the water, and ate them.

Yeah, these would sell no matter where I go.
I'd made something that could turn a profit anywhere.

Translator and Editor Notes:

I think what I'm gonna do in these notes is figure out how the story could progress in a way where these chapters don't feel entirely like filler. Like, I'm trying to think of scenarios where these last couple extremely boring chapters would retroactively be necessary to build up something important later. I've gotta admit I'm completely at a loss for the charcoal and noodles shit, but…

For example, there's a lot of interesting potential for this Itembox spell that I am certain the author won't actually look into! Like, just brainstorming here, but if “Liam” is ever unsure about what an object is, or something, could he put it in the Itembox to check how the generated list describes it? Er, maybe not actually, cuz it seemed to know the term he'd come up with for “instant noodles” so it's probably just based on his own perception of it.

More importantly though, I want to know if you can kill somebody with Itembox. I want to see “Liam” trick someone to get them inside it, then vanish it and make them suffocate. Or vanish it when only their head's inside? Oooh.

Real talk: I really hope this MC stops obsessing over business soon, like these decisions make no goddamn sense omggg. Why can't you just become a battle-mage or something? At least that's cool!
