Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a peaceful kingdom. The King governed righteously, the Queen was kind,  and their daughter the Princess was very very beautiful. Everyone would laugh and share even the smallest joy, such a happy kingdom it was.

Nevertheless, one day, dark clouds enshrouded that kingdom. What a disaster. The ancient Demon King who should have been sealed five hundred years ago had revived.

Along with the revival of the Demon King, monsters started appearing in various place, performing atrocity everywhere.

Of course, the King sent troops towards the Demon King. However, the result was needless to say. During that five hundred years, the Demon King had been accumulating power even stronger than before, and he generously used that power to easily slaughter all of the brave kingdom’s knights who rose up and went to the Demon Capital.

Thus, despair started to spread out among the people, and around that time, a beam of light from the sky shone on the Capital’s castle.

The light pointed at the thing lying dormant in the innermost part of the castle’s treasure room, the holy sword said to be the one used for sealing the Demon King before.

Thus the King realized. The Goddess that was the guardian deity of the kingdom was showing a ray of hope towards this kingdom. In order to defeat the Demon King, the power of this holy sword was needed once more, thus he realized.

The holy sword glistening with golden radiance could only be unsheathed by the chosen one, in other words, the Hero.

Every young man who went in and out of the Royal Palace tried to pull the holy sword out of its scabbard. However, the holy sword remained sheathed.

As if being glued, the sword perfectly stuck to its scabbard, and no matter by whose hand it was pulled, the sword never let its blade leaving from the scabbard.

In the end the King put out an official notice and gathered young men from all over the kingdom. It is me who’s most suited to be the Hero! thinking such, many young men challenged to unsheathe the holy sword, then gave up and left.

It was when everyone had hung their head, thinking that nothing could be done anymore, that one young man appeared late before the holy sword.

The young man was a noble. Although said as a noble, his status was not one high enough to earn him the right to have an audience with the King. He was a countryside young nobleman, who plowed the field together with his people and lived in the outskirts of the kingdom.

Be that as it may, that golden haired and green eyed young man was very dignified and beautiful. Beyond his charming appearance however, more than anything, he was a gentle young man who possessed great courage inside him.

The instant that young man appeared, the holy sword released a radiance never seen before. And with the young man’s hand, the shining sword was finally unsheathed.

The holy sword was raised up high, how beautiful it was. The young man raised the holy sword up, how heroic and splendid he was.

Anyone who saw that figure would utter it is him who’s most suited to be the Hero. Even the upper nobles who usually ridiculed the countryside nobles and the young man, kneeled down. The King too thought that if it’s him, I can entrust him our kingdom’s future.

Hence, the young man─────no, the Hero went on his journey.

With the princess who had receive the Goddess’ divine protection on her body, in other words, the Miko hime. With the chief of royal magician who had the most magic power within the kingdom. And then, with the leader of chivalric order who had the best swordsmanship within the kingdom along as his companions.

In order to defeat the Demon King, they went on a long, long journey.

…so, until here, have you grasped the present condition of our kingdom?

When I tried to recite the story in my usual way of talking, in other words, when I tried to do it the noble lady style, it’ll just seem like a fairy tale, a legend, or an epic. But, when it became a reality, it’s simply too disastrous.

Fearing the Demon King’s troops, the kingdom’s political affair has gone unstable, the rotten nobles were either running away to the countryside or buying up goods tremendously that the price of goods rose, increasing the anxiety of the people, public order went worse…the kingdom once fell into a period where even criticizing is troublesome.

Nonetheless, even when we were cornered to that end, it is fortunate that the kingdom has such a capable King.

The King came out with all kinds of possible political measures, and there’s a lot of his trusted retainers that adore him for that, thus allows them to barely maintain the peace in the surface of the kingdom. However, even someone like me, a humble noble lady that lives in the Royal Capital knows, that this situation is just like walking on top of thin ice.

It’s surely for this reason that the Hero party only consisted of a few selected elites. The defeat of our kingdom’s force the other day proves that even if we attack the Demon King with number, we’re still no match for him. Hero chosen by the holy sword. Miko hime who received Goddess’ divine protection. Magician who has the most magic power within the kingdom. Leader of chivalric order who has the best swordsmanship within the kingdom.

The strongest lineup of our kingdom, at the same time, could be said as the manifestation of the upper echelon’s intention, including the King who intend on limiting the damage to the minimum.

Otherwise, save for the ‘countryside young nobleman’ who became the hero, it should be impossible to send the King’s precious only daughter,  the chief of royal magician, nor the leader of chivalric order.

By sending them, the King has casted a magic in front of the people. A magic named as the last hope.

That magic succeed splendidly, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. With this, everything will be alright. While staying unaware that that is what the upper echelon has aimed for.

Or else, maybe this is just me overthinking it. I don’t understand. I don’t understand but, no matter how you see it, the fact that this is a mainstream fantasy is an unshakable truth.

The so-called the world of sword and magic. That is this world, and within it, precisely right now, the mainstream fantasy is unfolded.
