Legend Slayers 27 James VS Kyrie

Centra threw her arms around her little bother and held him tight.

While Corson stared at DJ with a look of, can you get her off me? He'd just won his place as the fifth competitor for the zero years and under tourney. It had been a close fight and he wanted to shower. Unfortunately, Centra had camped out in front of the men's locker room. Her group was supposed to be prepping for the tourney with the other first years as Corson's bout was the last one for the zero years and under.

After another awkward moment, that DJ definitely enjoyed watching, he said, "Centra we need to get ready."

Centra released her brother with a smile. "Congrats!"

Corson quickly stepped towards the safety of the men's locker room. "Thanks. Good luck with your's."

Centra glanced at Kyrie. They wouldn't need luck with him around. Or maybe they needed a lot of luck because he was around.

Corson took the risk of another hug and leaned forward. He whispered, "Don't rely on him too much. He'll leave and he knows it." "I'll be cheering you on from the stands."

Centra turned back to Kyrie. He'll leave, did Corson mean he'd turn on them? Kyrie, he'd screw up again, forget things, go off on his own – more than the others would be comfortable with, but abandon them? Betray them? That didn't seem like the hero who'd rushed to their aid during the drill. Yet, heroes turned. And there had to be people who believed their hero was different, that Kyrie was different. And he was. He wouldn't leave them.

Kyrie shifted awkwardly. Centra was staring at him and had been for a while. Was his hair messed up again? Kyrie reached up to fix his hair. Uh, nope it was good. So –

"We should get ready," Liza said as she grabbed Centra's hand and led her towards the women's locker room.

The first years gathered in their teams on the arena grounds there were only 915 students on the arena floor. It was late evening and the sun would set in two hours. Last year it had taken three hours to narrow the teams down to the top five. And the whole event was broadcasted to the public.

That year the arena was full, and students' section was packed but an empty section nearby was kept empty by the arena staff. The questions people had been asking were, "How's Raven Clof going to keep the tourney fare with Kyrie amongst the first years?" and, "Would he rig it so Kyrie was a representative?"

The team captains stood at the front of their teams. The combat Pross stood in front of their classes of 45 to 50 students.

Headmaster raven Clof stood in front of his students and staff. He spoke with his holo-watch connected to the arena's newer speaker system, "Everyone, welcome. We've selected our zero-year and under representatives. It's time to select our first-year teams. This year each team will select one member to start as their representative. They will then participate in a free for all battle that ends when five participants remain on the field. When a participant's aura drops bellow 60 they will be disqualified. If they do not participate in combat every five minutes they will be disqualified. Please select your participant you have three minutes."

Centra turned to look at her team. Kyrie was the best choice, but would he really leave them someday? Could she rely on him?

Liza spoke up first, "Kyrie should be our rep."

DJ nodded it seemed a bit cheap, but he was the best choice. "I … agree."

Kyrie glanced at Centra. "Are you sure?"

Centra sighed and nodded. Kyrie was here. He wouldn't leave. "Yes. You'll be our representative."

Centra smiled and said, "Plus, they'll have one hell of a time trying to get your aura down to 60."

Kyrie smiled back at her and said, "I'm more concerned they'd avoid combat with me, so I'll get disqualified."

Centra smirked, "I think your fast enough to catch someone if that happens. Plus, if each team is picking their strongest member, I'm sure you'll have more than a few people who'll want to take a hero down."

♢ ♢ ♢

Headmaster Raven Clof stood with his hands behind his back as he watched the first years discussed their choices amongst themselves and with their Profs. When the time was up, he said, "Representatives front and center please."

183 students moved to the front. Each student eyed their competitors.

"Fuck. Both of them are participating."

"Shit. All three – no four."

"No. I can't let them psych me out now."

"I'm taking one of them down."

"Yes. I'm going for that idiotic hero. I told him it was just a drill."

Raven Clof looked over his students. He nodded when he saw Kyrie and Ren amongst the participants. Unfortunately, to keep Kyrie in the match he'd have to make him a tempting target. "The rules are: no A rank or higher attacks and your out if you drop to 60 aura. If you are injured or caused an injury you will be disqualified. Before we have the others leave and began the battle, I'd like Kyrie t come forward."

Kyrie walked up to Raven Clof who held out his hand to check Kyrie's weapon was the replica. He found the little symbol RT carved into it and he didn't drop it.

Raven Clof handed the RT back. "Kyrie I'm going to measure your aura. If you drop one hundred aura points lower than your current measurement you will be disqualified." It had to be done to keep the competition fair.

Kyrie gulped but nodded. It had been a long time since he'd worried over losing a measly hundred aura points. It had been a very long time. Yet, he could track that kind of lose on other people so he could do it for himself, hopefully.

Kyrie placed his hand on Raven Clofs measurement device 2,792 was displayed on the screen. Kyrie couldn't hit 2,692 or he'd be out, and he was one of the most tempting targets for the free for all. Most of these selected had at least 120 aura to lose before they hit 60.

♢ ♢ ♢

The Profs for most of the combat classes lined the arena. There was one Prof per student. Their job was to track who the student fought with, if they were injured and if their aura had dropped to low. Professor Olson was watching Kyrie as the other job of the Profs was to stop their students from going too far and the other Profs had argued over not wanting to be responsible for stopping an epic ranked hero from going overboard.

Headmaster Raven Clof and Vice-Headmaster Alicia were the only occupants of the ref's box. Raven Clof hit the start button.

"Beeeeep!"

And it started. Even though they wouldn't have to take much of Kyrie's aura, students went for the closest student with less aura or for the weaker ones.

But James had a different idea. Kyrie could be taken out and he'd be the biggest pain for James to leave on the field. James gripped his spear and sprinkled a seed in the ground. It sprouted and branched. James had grown a pumpkin vine that's hair like thorns were elongated and reinforced. It slithered behind him as he charged at Kyrie.

Thwack.

Kyrie spun the RT and knocked James's spear to the side. Of course, James went for him. James was Kyrie's first pick as well. For the exact same reason, he was James's.

James quickly stepped back and to the side. He knew Taru's reach like the back of his hand. He'd grown his spear to have a longer reach for fighting Kyrie. The RT's blade sliced in front of James as Kyrie missed and redirected his swing.

James ducked and swept his spear at Kyrie.

Kyrie twisted and maneuvered the blade between him and James's spear.

Thwack.

James extended and altered the angle of his swing to avoid his spearhead from being sliced off. Behind him, the pumpkin continued to branch and grow. The vines braiding themselves in preparation of James's attack.

Kyrie could sense James's aura being directed at a plant behind James. He needed to kill it before James was done prepping. Kyrie Flicked a blade under James's spear.

Thwack.

James grit his teeth, the shock running up the spear made his hands tingle. Kyrie was going for his pumpkin.

James spun and sliced at Kyrie's side as Kyrie circled towards the vine.

Kyrie pivoted to face James's attack.

Thwack.

Kyrie nocked James's spear away and stepped towards the plant. James had left an opening. But Kyrie knew James. It was bait, to buy his plant time.

James pressed his attack. He only needed a moment more.

Normally, Kyrie'd take the attack in favor of killing James's plant. But he couldn't lose a lot of aura. And James was someone Kyrie struggled to fight short bouts with. They knew each other well.

Thwack.

Thump. Flash. Thwa – crack.

James vine slashed into Kyrie's aura and wound around his right leg. Kyrie's aura flared and the display showed his aura had decreased by 20. Kyrie absorbed the vines momentum and channeled it into an attack that sliced through James's spear.

James's aura flared. He lost 30 aura he could still lose 126 aura.

Kyrie was down to 80.

Author's Note:

I will be switching to updates every two weeks. I'm starting my next semester at university and it will be busier than my last semester. I'm also working on editing book one for a competition to get a writing mentor! I really appreciate you sticking with me and all of the characters through their story. I'm getting close to finishing my degree and only have three semesters left. The next two should be busy and hard ones though. On the bright side, I will be resuming the normal release schedule in December!
