Kyrie coughed. "That's ... a little ... thanks." He took another bite of the to salty pie. It was fully cooked but the bottom was soaked and falling apart. Kyrie smiled at James and DJ. That pie was way too salty, but it was really good to have it again. Kyrie took a bite of the cake. It was delicious and the frosting wasn't too sweet. "It's good." But he'd rather eat the too salty pie.

DJ and James served the others the celebratory food they wanted. They walked around the table and claimed spots on the warm sand or towels they'd brought.

Jasper claimed the spot next to Kyrie but watched the ocean.

"Dude you never called me," Ren said with a smile. She wasn't that worried about it they still had a week before their first mission.

"Oh." Kyrie groaned, "I'm sorry." He set his fork down and said, "How about we talk tonight?"

Ren leaned backward on the sand and shrugged. "It's fine. We can talk tomorrow."

Kyrie smiled meekly and fiddled with his fork. He may have picked up too many things to do. But the only one he could drop without a guilty conscious was the one he wanted to do the most, go to school with his friends.

Caleb sat up and watched Ren with excitement. "Yeah? What's the game?"

Ren unstrapped her sword and laid it on her towel. "I'm going to need Kyrie's help."

Kyrie stood up and walked over to Ren and Caleb. "What are we doing?"

"The game's called," Ren grinned. "Through Caleb on the ocean."

"What?"

Kyrie turned to Caleb as he scrambled to his feet. "Do you know how to swim?"

Caleb glanced between Ren and Kyrie. If he said no they'd probably go easier on him. But, Caleb grinned, it wouldn't be as much fun. And he could swim. Caleb stepped back. "Yep." He spun on his heal, activated his ability, and dodged Kyrie's first grab.

Kyrie laughed and chased him. It'd be more fun without his ability. Even so, Kyrie managed to keep up.

Ren pulled her shoes off to feel the warm sand beneath her feet. She dashed over to cut Caleb off as he dodged another grab from Kyrie. She tackled him to the ground and got up as Kyrie helped Ren grab him. They carried a very tense Caleb over to the ocean water.

Ren nodded to Kyrie. "One." They swung him. "Two... Three!"

They let Caleb go and he splashed into the shallow cold water.

Ren smiled as she said, "Who's next?"

"You!" Kyrie and Caleb said as Caleb yanked Ren in and Kyrie pushed her.

When Ren splashed into the water she and Caleb tugged Kyrie down with them. They laughed and splashed each other before they grinned and went after the others.

DJ was the only one that was dry. And that was only because his Meow phones wouldn't have survived the water. A little like Kyrie's boots.

He sat on a towel and was pulling them off. He probably should've kept his aura up. But, Kyrie glanced at James and his friends, it wouldn't have been as much fun. As Kyrie pulled his other boot off Jasper blushed and said, "I'm gay," as he watched Kyrie for his reaction.

Kyrie dumped the water from his boot as he said with a grin. "Me too."

Jasper relaxed. That was good. It meant he had a chance.

James groaned as he glanced between Kyrie and Jasper. Kyrie was incredibly dense sometimes and others he left James baffled as to how Kyrie figured it out. "Ky, you aren't gay."

The others glanced at each other. This just got really awkward.

Jasper was the image of one who's hopes had been crushed like a fragile piece of glass.

DJ narrowed his eyes and started to speak, "James -"

But Caleb was faster. "You have no right to say the1"

Kyrie glanced at James in confusion. "What's wrong?"

The others claimed to speak but James held a hand up and said, "Quite!" He sighed and continued, "Just give me a sec," James dropped his hand and said, "Kyrie do you know what Jasper meant?"

"Well, yeah. He's really happy and so am I."

James nodded as if to say, see there was a miscommunication problem going on.

Jasper groaned. That meant he had no chance with Kyrie, fuck.

"Hey, it's okay Jasper." James smiled as he said, "Kyrie's bi."

"What? I'm not -" Kyrie groaned laid on his back in the sand as he stared at the pink-colored sky. The barriers meant safety but often it made him feel cut off and trapped. "There's another meaning to that word too?"

"Yep." James reached down and pulled Kyrie up. "It means you are interested in both men and women as sexual partners." James gestured from Jasper to Kyrie.

"Uh," Jasper's cheeks were warm and a bit flushed. He'd never imagined he'd be explaining this stuff to another teen or Kyrie for that matter. "Umm uh, gay means a guy is interested in other guys. L-like me."

Kyrie groaned again as he put his head in his hands. This conversation was so - hold it, "You mean I've been accidentally turning down hot guys in clubs by saying I'm not gay."

James smiled as he patted Kyrie on the back. "It's okay buddy."

Kyrie smiled at Jasper apologetically. "Sorry for the mix-up. Are - are we still okay?"

Jasper nodded and fiddled with the present he'd been hiding. "Uh, here." It was okay to give Kyrie his present.

Kyrie opened it and pulled out a small charm. It was carved out of silver wood and the shape of a rose whose stem was bent into a heart. Kyrie could sense a little magic on it.

As Kyrie studied it Jasper said, "It's a good luck charm for -" he swallowed. "Your love life. To you k-know f-find your s-soul mate."

"Ah, thanks." Kyrie slipped the charm on his belt then pulled the edge of his shirt over it. He'd need all the luck he could get in that department.

Jasper pulled a small paper bag from his stuff. He took the bag to DJ and said, "Here. So you can sleep."

DJ opened the bag and pulled out a small charm on the end of a leather cord.

"When you p-put it on you'll be s-silenced so you shouldn't w-wear it all th-the time."

"Thanks." DJ smiled at Centra as he put it in his pocket.

The next present Kyrie opened was from Syra and Andray. Though Syra picked it. It was a small vial of a bright green potion. She gave it to him with a note. Kyrie looked at her and said, "Thank you."

Ren grabbed the largest present and sat it in front of Kyrie. "It's a present from Null, Olson, and I."

Kyrie unwrapped it and opened the wooden case. He smiled as he said, "This is perfect thank you." It was a replica of Taru though less versatile. It was fragile and had rounded blades but was perfect for the upcoming bouts with students.

Amity and Ana's present was next. Kyrie laughed as he opened it. "This great thanks." He pulled the dark blue sleeveless hoodie with the blue classic swirls of Laserath clothing on it. He brushed some of the sand off his clothes and put it on.

Ana grinned as she said, "Now you look like a real Laserathian."

Kyrie looked at the hoodie and smiled. He did - didn't he. The next present was tossed at him by Casey. Kyrie caught the present as he said, "Casey, you could have told me I needed to take more showers." Casey had given Kyrie extra strength deodorant.

Caleb laughed as Casey said, "Hey, you smell too." Though most people wouldn't have noticed the smell coming from Caleb or Kyrie. They were actually the least smelly guys in the group. And Casey's wolf nose was the only reason she could smell them at all.

Liza's present was in an envelope. It was something that made her heartache to give. But she needed it gone and her hands were slowly steadying. She'd make another one. When Kyrie opened the envelope he pulled out the drawing Liza had made. It was a picture of him doing his math homework. To Kyrie that felt like a lifetime ago, to most of those around him it felt far to near and close to the surface. "Thank you." Kyrie slipped the drawing back into the envelope.

Kyrie unwrapped the present from DJ and Centra. It was over the ear headphones and a custom music tag. Kyrie used his watch to scan the tag. When he opened his music he found 30 different songs that DJ'd gathered for him. One of the few songs he recognized was Future by the Torches. "This is awesome, thank you."

The last present was from James. Kyrie unwrapped it and pulled out a small container. The container was filled with therapy putty. James had picked one small enough to comfortably slip into a pocket. It was one with high tension.

Kyrie pocketed it and looked at James. "What is it?"

James smiled. "It's a putty. You fiddle with it instead of your ribbons." With the added benefit not unconsciously hurting himself.

"Oh." Kyrie pulled it out and tested it. "Cool!"

They goofed around it and introduced Kyrie to sand construction. DJ decided to hold a competition amongst groups. James and Kyrie paired up and made a kick-ass sand treehouse. But then they had years of experience working on such creations together.

It was a wonderful day to have to fun under the barrier that supported a fragile human existence. It was one of the things Kyrie had fought for. Fought to protect even if he'd never held more than an image of his wish in his head. For the first time, he held it as an experience, one that he'd fight to have again.
