The Sorcerer Laughs in the Mirror v1c4

Rachel was tall and beautiful. Her eyes were long, and her wise smile made an impression.

A girl like her wearing black men’s clothing and stretching her back to seem taller had a sort of perverse charm.

“It does suit you, but…”

Rachel patted my head as I stood there staring at her in the middle of my sentence.

“They had a wig, but my role moves around a lot, so…”

My mother, brought back to her senses by Rachel’s words, interjected with concern.

“Your sister…no, your mother, what did she say?”

“She cried.”

“As expected…”

Mother showed herself release a deep sigh, but Rachel stayed collected. The meaning of this was truly significant. Though she had had such pretty hair.

“I figured it would grow back again, and I wanted to concentrate on my acting.”

Rachel continued, but then whispered close to my ear. “If you cut your hair, you become really popular with underclassmen girls.”

“Girls?”

“The time for being popular is now.”

“What about boys?”

“I don’t know.”

Rachel’s expression faded. “I wonder why I’m not popular with boys. Except for my personality, I have a lot of confidence in myself.”

Yes, undeniably Rachel and I were connected by blood.

However, if I cut my hair I would never come out as stylish as Rachel. At best, I would look like a baby bird with fluffy locks, and most likely get treated like a child.

“By the way, what kind of part are you playing?”

When I continued with this question, Rachel smirked.

“A thief.”

“Huh?”

“The main character, a girl, is betrothed to someone decided by her parents, but one day, she meets a mysterious young man in the middle of the night. Although he’s a rich thief who is always ready to snatch valuables, things happen, and they fall in love with a promise.”

“That’s Rachel for you.”

“Yeah. Someone with evil charms?”

She shrugged her shoulders with an exaggerated motion, but even that fit her.

“Hey, are there any boys in the theater club?”

“…unfortunately no.”

She knitted her eyebrows. “At the school festival, the theater club puts on a flashy show, but other than that we don’t do much. With guys, magic clubs and fencing are more popular.”

“Oh.”

“Next year when you come to this school, join the theater club. I’ll show you how to play innocent.”

At that moment, Rachel narrowed her eyes at me.

That would be good too, I thought.

I snuck a look at my parents to see them smiling.

“I’ll think about it once I start coming here.”

For the time being I gave a safe reply, grinning.

After that, Rachel returned to the waiting room to finish preparing for the play.

We went back into the hall and chose our seats.

Then, we waited for the curtains to rise.

I found the play very entertaining.

Students apparently had written the script. There was a lot of straight man action, but with a good pace and tempo, leaving room for some laughs.

They even used magic in the production. Fancy.

The main girl couldn’t get with the thief; however she didn’t marry her fiancée either.

As the story progressed, it was revealed that the fiancée was actually up to no good in order to maintain his prosperous lifestyle. However due to this development, the thief adopted the position of keeping our heroine from getting mixed up in crime, and meanwhile, an investigator suddenly appeared, making the fiancée think that the thief might actually be the investigator out to get him.

In the end, the thief becomes the main girl’s best option, but he simply tells her he’ll meet her again someday and vanishes. Then, after a few months, the broken-hearted main character encounters a man that looks a lot like the thief– bringing the show to a close.

Rachel was exceptional!

The girl who played the main character was also very cute.

It made me start to seriously think about joining the theater club in the future.

There were a lot of people handing out bouquets to the performers, and I really wanted to give one to Rachel.

“Let’s go to the waiting room!”

Elated, I grabbed my father and pulled him along. My mother quietly groaned.

“I’m sure Rachel is very tired. Let’s keep it brief.”

“Of course!”

I flashed a full-faced smile and exited the lobby. Claire frantically followed behind me, shouting at me to slow down. Mother and father sat down on a sofa in the lobby with exhausted sighs.

When we reached the waiting room, there was a bouquet lying on the floor outside the door. I thought someone dropped it, or maybe bashfully placed it there in secret. I picked it up and knocked on the door. Performers, still in their costumes, peaked through at me.

“I’m Rachel’s cousin. The play was amazing!”

As a result of this declaration, the actors all grinned excitedly. They then called Rachel for me.

“It was so good!”

As I praised Rachel to the high heavens, she vigorously ruffled my hair.

“Thanks!”

As she said this, her eyes moved to the bouquet in my hands.

“Oh, I picked this up over there. Do you think someone dropped it?”

I looked back at Rachel’s face to see a slightly troubled smile.

“Is that so? Lately a lot of these kinds of bouquets have been left around for me. I’ve been kind of worried because I have no idea who is doing it.

“Could it be a fan?”

As I followed her with a smirk, Rachel began to escape from me, laughing nervously.

“I mean, it would be nice to have a fan, but the bouquets have even been arriving at the mansion, which is a bit…”

It had to be an over-enthusiastic fan.

Of course. Rachel is super popular.

Sending flowers was something that seemed like a boy would do. Someone was probably watching over her behind the scenes.

“Well, whatever, there’s nothing wrong with flowers. I’ll place them in the room.”

While smiling she received the bouquet from me.

We left the waiting room and headed to the lobby. Claire seemed relieved we were finally going home.

My parents saw the two of us and chuckled as they stood.

“Before we go, we have to say some words to the principal.”

My father scratched his head as my mother nodded in agreement.

As Claire went to call the carriage, I followed my parents with composure.

We called someone at the reception desk and were led to the principal’s office.

While they spoke to him, very busily, people who I assumed to be teachers came in and out and called out to us to greet us as guests.

After a meeting briefly with the principal, we left.

With my parents chatting quietly in the background, I observed the passing people in the hall.

I’m going to be a student here next year!

It’s so exciting!

The moment I thought this my vision suddenly blurred.

My head was greeted with a light blow.

What?

I tried to catch a glimpse of my parents, but everything went dark.
