It is entirely possible for his brain, or his consciousness in this case to feel that time was moving slower than it actually was. You can do the experiment yourself. Close your eyes and without counting, try to open them when you think a minute has passed, odds are you'll be short by a few seconds(unless you try to cheat, but you'll only be fooling yourself).
