Technomancer: Genesis Chapter 25: AMP

Ezra kept on testing the newfound ability the past few days. He had yet to name the ability but he was thinking of naming it soon. The ability still was not stable at all. Sometimes he needed little magic power to use it but a lot of times he found that it drained him hastily. The duration he could maintain the ability was from five minutes to an hour depending on the number of things he was keeping track of. It was tedious to practice this as he would often faint and make Aerwyna worry especially when he tried to keep track of everyone at work in the courtyard. He would then sleep for the whole day if his mana was fully depleted. Ezra did not yet know if this was something permanent or something that would improve as his body grew older. He did notice that there was both a steady increase in his mana capacity and the duration of his ability.

When he was left alone with Aerwyna, he tested it himself by running around. He could see his momentum, velocity, force and his own thermal emission if he wanted to but he found out that he could segregate the equations and activate only what he needed at the moment. For example, if he wanted to analyze the speed of an object he would turn off all other elements that he did not need. This reduced the mana consumption and the duration of the ability by a notable amount from one hour to five hours. A five-hundred percent increase.

'How do I use this in battle? Certainly, I need to use a probability equation to the mix so that I can predict the oncoming attack. Wait does this account for the things I am currently seeing or can I use this when I am sensing others using my magic aura? '

'Test 1: Something is reacting but I can't see scribbles in my head. It seems that it is more of a feeling.'

'Test 2: I closed my eyes this time, I can sense the trajectory but I have trouble imparting the ability if I don't see the object and only sense it. . . '

'Test 11: Failed attempt, I inadvertently looked behind'

'Test 13: Success, I did it but seem to be expending mana more than the usual. It seems that this ability is better used when I can see with my eyes.'

Ezra became very drowsy as he did his experiments with his new found skill. He once again succumbed to slumber.

Aerwyna noticed this and picked him up once more as she went back to his room she talked to Catalyna.

"Are babies this sleepy all the time?" Asked Aerwyna she was thoroughly worried about Ezra's constant passing out she had wanted to bring him to a physician but was deterred because he might be able to tell of Ezra's exceptional talent. Aerwyna did not like going to the doctor herself and would only go if it was really necessary.

"Of course Milady. Children Ezra's age are very fragile and they tend to sleep more."

"But Ezra was just energetic a while ago and was scurrying about and then he suddenly fainted so it seemed."

"You worry for the safety of your child too much Madame, sometimes it is not healthy. You should get some rest as well."

"Maybe you are right Catalyna. I should not overdo it. Ezra is growing and I can see him develop into a fine gentleman someday. He is just probably tired from all his scurrying. At least I'm glad that he is energetic somewhat." Aerwyna still held the truth from Catalyna as she did not tell her about what Ezra was really doing. She was scared that her son's secret would be divulged and further endanger her family.

Ezra woke up in the middle of the night. He surmised it was around midnight, Aerwyna should have been beside him but he was left to the care of Catalyna.

'Weird, why isn't Aerwyna here? I would have liked to test out slowing down my time awareness, I did get it done somewhat last time but I did not fully integrate it with my new skill. If I could just combine the two. The time awareness skill consumes a lot of mana though and the other ability uses even more. I don't think I can combine the two yet. Maybe I'll find a way down the road. Huh? '

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Catalyna talking to a guard with hushed voices. The guard handed her a letter of some sort.

'This woman, pff. Having a tryst while on duty? Should I tell on her? Ahh, no need people should do whatever they please as long as they don't hurt other people. I'll just overlook this matter for now. Wait, was that a letter from a guard? Wow, I misjudged this place, seems like a lot of them are literate.'

'Wait she's coming back better pretend to sleep again.'

Catalyna returned to the chair nearby his crib.

'Damn it! What do I do? I'm not tired and I can't move about with her here. Hmm, maybe I'll just deplete my mana, that'll make me tired and fall asleep again.'

Ezra tried to activate slowing down time awareness. Everything was even slower than before, then he tried to incorporate the equation ability. He only lasted for twenty seconds till he depleted all of his magic.

As he woke up the next day, Aerwyna took him to the library again.

"Ezra, why do you always faint? Try to be more careful don't exhaust yourself too much when you are playing. " Aerwyna was doting on her child as she was enthralled at seeing her son play.

"Yes mother," Ezra kept the ability a secret for now as he did not see any benefit on his parents actually knowing that he had such a skill.

'Hmm, I can actually see what equations that are in use when there is motion but what do I get when objects actually just stand still? '

'Nope, nothing. Wait what if I just think about measuring them?'

'Woah, I see a lot. Weight, height, potential energy, mass, density temperature. Wait everything is overwhelming. I can't think straight. Maybe I'll just filter out what I need.'

Ezra discovered that much like moving objects, he could see some data pertaining to a quantitative assessment of the object

He then had an Idea.

'Wait, if I can do this what if I visualize a chemical formula? Will I be able to discern the chemical composition of the matter an object is composed of? That would be very useful indeed. Let's try.'

After a few attempts, nothing happened.

'Ahh, I guess that would not make sense at all. I can only see quantitative values of course.'

'It seems that my brain is compiling all the previous data of my past life. I can get an exact measurement in meters and centimetres of an object I want to appraise. This would be useful if I wanted to design my own mechanical or electrical apparatus in the future. The measurement system here is awful just like the government. Whoever uses imperial units is an idiot. That's all the tests I can think up of for now. Maybe I'll name this ability of mine Augmented Mathematical Processing. I'll just call it AMP for short like amplitude or amplify.' Ezra smiled at his new found ability that would aid him in comprehensively exploring the world around him.
