Shadowless Night Chapter 7

CH 7 NWS

Calyx was looking down, out the window into the large garden of the Red Wheel County. People were walking in the colourful garden where the gardener's skill was shining. There was a woman with a black hair tied-up wearing a white shirt, grey pants, and suspenders. Not a dress a noble lady would wear.

But Roselyn has always had a rough time with dresses. It must have been hard for her to do her job and move her body. The maids tagged along behind her walking in the flower bed.

One carried a parasol for the lady's skin, and one held a shawl for fear of her being cold. Another ran after her carrying a fan in fear of her being hot, and the final maid was holding a basket of snacks in case she was hungry. Similar to Calyx, the Maids had also been good at following Roselyn in the past. Can't they feel her absence (sense the imposter)? Calyx's expression twisted.

“Look at this, lady, the flowers are really beautiful.”

“You look prettier.”

Oh, my goodness! The maids were laughing and having fun. Calyx has seen this scenery before. In spring, when the flowers bloomed, Roselyn found herself on a picnic with the young maids who wanted to go out and play.

If the maids commented on Roselyn's beauty she would say, [You're more beautiful, Ilya.] It's just how Roselyn was. The maids were also amazed at Roselyn's resemblance to her past self, even though she couldn't remember anything.

“You're the same, even if you don't remember!”

“As expected, you are our Lady!” Their words buzzed around Calyx's mind.

That wasn't Roselyn. That is not Roselyn. That's not my sister. No. Calyx thought about Alter's report with a complex mind. It was a document about shadows. He kept looking at it habitually, and now he could memorize every line of the documents.

[I came here to protect.]

What?

[I came to protect him.]

Who!

[The Master of the White Nights]

It was a complete stranger. It was a monster wearing Roselyn's shell. Until it said that.

Until it said it would protect the Master of the White Night, it was just something wearing his sister's face…Calyx thought something was burning in her eyes when she said that, it was like a spark of fire. He smiled to himself unconsciously.

After all the doubt and agony, Calyx had defined 'the being' as a perfect stranger, but at that moment it was like he was truly speaking to his sister again. It was saying the same things she had. The name of the person she had always wanted to protect, even if it meant going against their father. Because of that, Calyx had to put his sword away.

For a moment, Carlyx thought, 'Maybe this is what she wanted.'

It may have been her only option with death on the horizon.

On that day, Calyx cut off the head of the spy entering the office to cover up the twisted neck. After all, anyone can easily question the strange appearance of a twisted neck.

[The night air is cold. Please be careful when going home. He rushed out with the body the dead spy.]

Two weeks have passed since the night. Roselyn's wounds were almost healed, leaving only faint traces behind. She used her fork and knife skillfully and did not pick up any food which had fallen on the floor.

Taking advantage of her memory loss, Edelweiss bought her daughter many dresses and tried to have her wear it, but from day one on, she did not put on any dresses. She wore shirts and pants, boots that come up right under the calves. Edelweiss looked on and wept as Roselyn walked around the County.

She learned letters and languages. Although it was not enough yet, it was fast. It also seemed like she was in the process of gradually re-awakening what she had already known but had forgotten for a long time.

Roselyn, who was looking at the flower garden, suddenly turned her head. Her eyes met with Calyx, who was looking down with his arms folded. She raised her hand slightly and gave a small wave.

Calyx looked as if he had been smacked in the back of the head. Though a little shaky, he also waved his hand.

Roselyn smiled slightly and walked alongside the maids.

The figure became smaller and smaller, and soon it was hidden from view by the building.

“Are you all right?”

Alter, standing far behind Calyx, asked. What he spoke contained a variety of meanings. Are you all right, my lord? Or it may have meant, is it okay to leave her be?

However, Carlyx was thinking only of Roselyn all day and accepted it as the latter. He tossed the papers in his hand into the fireplace. Whether or not Alter had a wry look, Calyx still held the flint, then ignited the documents on fire.

Alter had a look of grief. All his blood, sweat, and tears have become ashes.

“I'm a good brother.”

Good Calyx. Our Cal. You're a good boy. As a child, Roselyn used to say that many times. Calyx gave a bitter laugh.

“If your wishes was truly for this…”

The flames began to burn as the light reflected off of Calyx's eyes. It didn't stop, burning through every scrap of paper, leaving not a drop of ink behind.

“I will just go along with it.”

Thick black smoke flowed out of the chimney down the road. Roselyn looked at the smoke rising up into the sky for a few minutes and then turned away.

“Lady!”

No running. No talking loudly. No speaking in a frivolous manner. It was the day when the exemplary butler broke down. Calyx, who was training in swordsmanship, felt something was wrong when he saw the butler running in a hurry. And he had an inkling that it had something to do with 'her.'

“Lord Raymond of Great Horn has visited the County to see you!”

It's urgent, right. Damn it. Calyx was sweaty, but he had to put on his outerwear without even thinking about washing himself off. It was only the people of the Red Wheel County who knew Roselyn had amnesia.

Internally, Edelweiss had decided that Roselyn's position as a current member of the White Night Knights would be dangerous for her daughter's marriage. The leader of the Knights of the White Night always kept an eye on Roselyn.

The Count Red Wheel, belonged to the political party of the First Prince. However, the eldest daughter was in the Knights of the Second Prince, and many thought her eyes were not clear. He was quiet for a month, because her injuries were serious and his schedule was very busy with the hunting event.

However, enough time had passed for everything to be settled and her medical leave of absence was also ending. Great Horn's Raymond. He was one of the few close people to Roselyn. He must have come to personally visit her, with greetings and pressure from the deputy head.

But there was clearly a reason why her return had to be delayed, even if she had recovered from her wounds. She spoke well now, but she was still struggling because she didn't know the difference between informal and formal language, and she had no memory of the Roselyn before.

The maid and servants followed Calyx, who entered the main building in a hurry. Their expressions were full of nervousness, so Calyx moved a little faster.

“Master, Sir Raymond went up to see the lady first!”

“What the hell, why didn't you stop him?”

“Sir Raymond said, 'What permission do I need in order to meet my friend?' and the Lord is a very precious person, so I couldn't stop him.”

Calyx clenched his teeth and ran. Up ahead of him, he heard 'Master!' It sounded urgent. Her door was wide open. The maids were shaking at the doorway, and they looked as though they were going to cry. The call of 'Master' became too repetitive to his ears. The scene before his eyes reminded him of day one. When Roselyn was eating her steak using her hands…

It was… wild.

There was a man in the room wearing the Knights of the White Night's uniform. Raymond of Great Horn. He was a familiar acquaintance. But his posture was a bit weird. He was trembling on his knees in front of Roselyn, as though he were awaiting a military command.

“How dare you touch me. You want to die?”

Her tone was very much like Calyx. When he watched her secretly from behind over the last few days, he thought she had learned how to speak. Let's just say that is only partially true.…but, what she said was a little strange. Touch? Touch what? Calyx caught Raymond's shoulder with his eyes sharpening.

“Sir, what is this…? Wait, what, what's the matter? Sir Raymond? Sir, are you okay?”

The cool tone of Calyx's voice changed in a short period of time. Interrogation, questioning, then astonishment. On the other hand Raymond's face looked blue and his expression was serious. Raymond shuddered, grabbing Calyx by the arm and then fainted. Thump. The floor creaked. One of the little maids cried out in surprise, the butler was running over in the distance. Roselyn was humming, spreading jam onto the scones spread before her.

It was a mess. Raymond was taken to the guest room's bed. When his uniform was taken off, there was a red mark revealed on his stomach, most likely this would become a big bruise soon. Calyx first asked his sister what had happened. She put her flowing hair behind her ears and drank milk tea with a sour face.

“That's a very, very bad guy.”

“……don't say that about people.”

She did not help at all. When asking the maid in charge of fixing Roselyn's hair, she explained that Sir Raymond hugged the Lady as soon as he saw her. He was happy to see the lady safe. He didn't touch or do anything weird. But unfortunately, she was unused to it.

The maids knew she had lost her memory and were very concerned that the gentle and good lady had also lost all her common sense. They decided to provide some supplementary education. They said: [Lady, we sometimes touch you to decorate and dress you, like this. Other than these occasions, if someone you don't know tries to touch or pat you, be sure to tell someone. He's a really, really bad guy, okay? We'll scold them.]

[What about Calix?]

[Master Calyx is fine. But if its a stranger that you've only met for the first time, and they behave like that, then…..]

The maids told Roselyn, 'go ahead and beat them.'

They also said, 'Master Calyx will cover for any damage caused.'

Calyx closed his eyes tightly. What they overlooked was that Roselyn, who had lost her memory, knew no one else besides her family and the employees; all former friends and acquaintances were completely new to her. Calyx went to Roselyn's room. The proper education began only after all the people were beaten.
