When used as a term of address, I'll use the pinyin, but when it appears descriptively in the text, I'll use younger/little sister. I felt the other family member positions translated fine into English, but I feel like there's something really awkward about addressing someone as "sister" or "brother" in English. On the whole, I want to avoid overwhelming readers with pinyin, so I guess let me know if this grates on anyone's nerves.

[3] WenHao (文豪) means "eminent writer." Clearly they want him to be a scholar.

[4] Ge, gege, or da ge = older brother.

[5] i.e. surpassingly beautiful.

A note about the Nian family names. First of all, the character nian (念) can mean to study, to read, to attend school. I already mentioned the meaning of WenHao's name meaning great/eminent writer. Nian ShuRong's name, well, her surname combined with the first character of her name, nian shu (念书) means to read books. The elder brother's wife, Dù Shū, sounds a lot like dúshū which has different characters, but also means to read a book, or to study. The younger brother's wife, Ji JinWen, JǐnWén sounds a lot like jīnwén, again diff characters, but it refers to a style of writing on bronze. I got nothing for BingRong and YanHui, but the rest of the family is decidedly scholarly.
