Prologue"…Eh?" An utterly confused voice was what just leaked out from my mouth.
The words that Onii-chan just said didn't make any sense, no matter how many times I repeated them in my head. Ummm, what'd he just say? Up until a second ago, we had been talking about Onii-chan winning the grand prize for the light novel contest, right? So why… Turning it down…? I feel like I heard that strange word just then.
—No! No no no! Impossible! There's no way he just said that! It's the light novel contest's grand prize, you know? The goal that Onii-chan has always been working towards. There's no way he would turn down this chance! I won't believe it!
"O-Onii-cha—"
I really wanted to play it off as a joke, saying something like "What are you talking about, Onii-chan?", but the words wouldn't come out. I caught a glimpse of Onii-chan's face, and I saw his calm smile. He wore a resigned expression on his face, like his dreams had long been shattered. It was a sad and devastated smile… yet a smile as kind as the smile he always wore.
In that instant, it clicked inside my head. Those accursed words I had just heard weren't a product of my imagination. He really said it. The instant I realized that, my mind descended into chaos. At the same time, a deep rage started to build within my chest. I was about to scream at him and ask him why he would do something like that, after all his hard work. But right before I could, an all-too-familiar scene played back in my mind.
…The face Onii-chan made in front of me that day when I broke the plate. Just after I broke out in tears. His smile from back then… is the same as it is now…?
I finally understood. I didn't know why Onii-chan would do something as ridiculous as turning down the grand prize, but this anger building up inside of me, almost enough to make me break out in tears…
It was the same anger and sadness that had eventually led to my relationship with Onii-chan being as cold and awkward as it had been a few months back.
