Dale turned to Rita, looking at her appealingly as if asking for help.
Being flabbergasted, Rita sighed and comforted Dale. Regardless of the lovely Latina, Dale at this moment looked so upset like a poor puppy abandoned by an old bastard.
"It's okay if you're serious and sincere. Just tell your true feelings."
"Oh, I got it."
"... Don't try to get funny. Be serious to the utmost. ... Well, how about hugging and apologizing as usual?"
Hearing Rita's words, Dale looked worried again.
Now, Latina was no longer a little girl. She felt uneasy when Dale hugged her and rubbed her cheeks. Dale refused to acknowledge that her reaction was a rejection of his closeness. He didn't want to admit it.
However, Dale was not sure whether it was okay to use subtler behaviors to Latina who was in such a bad mood?
Depressed and troubled, Dale could not take any action. Rita put on a smile and gestured him to hurry up encouragingly.
For Dale, Rita's smile seemed to be a death sentence.
He stretched out his arms and hugged Latina from her back. Latina raised her shoulders. Her delicate and slender body could be easily encircled by his arms.
"Latina."
She trembled a little as if surprised by the loud voice when he called out her name.
"I'm sorry. I've made a mistake... I don't mean to hurt you."
Dale apologized, trying his best to soften his voice.
Thanks to the age gap, he could organize his words for apology to a young girl unreservedly. He knew he did not need to be bullheaded. Whenever he made a mistake, he must apologize. This was a good practice for himself. As an adult, Dale had to do his best to be her model and take care of her every day. He had got used to this kind of life.
When Latina did bad things, he scolded her seriously. But he didn't get over-angry because of his personal feelings. Dale thought that maybe this attitude was similar to that of his father in the hometown.
"Latina, you are so lovely a girl. But I don't want you to be a 'Magic Lady'. That's why you get angry, right? Just because of my selfish mind."
"You... but why?" Latina murmured in a low voice.
Dale did not miss the faint voice, and held her in his arms tightly. Judging from her tone, Latina was not so upset. This was an opportunity to communicate with her. Nothing was wrong if one wanted to explain something sincerely.
"Latina should be my Latina. Because I don't want you to become a 'Magic Lady', who will be stared at by other guys."
Latina, who had been hugged by Dale for such long, touched his arms lightly.
"Dale... It's alright, so ...you can release me now."
"I'm really sorry. Are you angry with me? "
"I'm not angry, really."
"Really?"
Dale, smiling with relief, finally loosened his embrace. After feeling relieved, he remembered that they had to talk about the temple in details. From next year, he would have to wake up those people concerned so that they could no longer talk such nonsense.
Dale headed towards the room, humming a song delightedly.
Though it was not necessary to change clothes to go to the temple, Dale should take the holy seal with him. He tried to remember where it was.
Then, after Dale left the room in a good mood, Latina flopped down onto the bed, in a daze.
"He's really ridiculous..."
Latina couldn't answer Rita's whispers. She tried her best to cover her flushed face with hands. This heat failed to be cooled by her palms.
She breathed a helpless sigh, looking at Rita with her watery gray eyes.
Latina knew that Dale's words "so lovely a girl" had no other meaning. There might be some special feelings in his words. But she didn't want to be on cloud nine for a misunderstanding.
Still, she hoped to get compliments from him rather than others. She wanted to hear the compliment of "lovely" from only one person- Dale.
Even though she understood that Dale had no other intention, when she felt his body temperature and was hugged by him so hard, hearing him supplicate her in a gentle voice --- it was a little exciting for a maiden in love.
"He's really stupid... right?"
Rita repeated his words bewilderedly and kindly. Latina responded with a compassionate sigh again, and lowered her head while holding her flushed cheeks.
On the day of "the Fertility Festival of Korumozei", Dale and Latina went to watch the votive dance of "Magic Lady" on the stage together.
As a result of "discussion", Dale did not have to participate as a priest this year. He was in a good mood with his lovely foster child, holding her hand to protect her from being lost in the crowd.
"Magic Lady" dressed in a sparkling and beautifully decorated outfit was performing on the stage. Latina cheered together with other audiences.
When Dale heard the accompaniment of the dance, he started to beat the rhythm with his fingers unconsciously.
He realized it was the melody played for the festival in his hometown, and beating the rhythm was his engrained habit.
"It's pretty."
"Really."
Looking at the happy Latina, he felt a little guilty.
"... Latina, I guess you want to perform on the stage of 'Magic Lady', right? "
Compared with any of the girls over there, she must be the most admirable one. It was natural for a girl of marriageable age to long to get beautifully dressed.
As a "guardian", it was not laudable for Dale to take her opportunity away selfishly.
However, Latina responded to his words with a blank look, and then she smiled.
"I feel rather happy to celebrate the festival with you than to perform on the stage."
As expected, she was the kindest girl in the world.
Dale clenched his fists to control his impulse to hug her.
Latina tilted her head and gazed at Dale wonderingly. When she saw him smiling to conceal his embarrassment, she smiled too.
Dale prayed and expressed his gratitude to the god of belief for granting him the time to be with Latina. Though his words were drowned in the noise of the crowd, Dale thought the god could hear. Because he was so pious that he always thought about things as a devout believer.
