CH 8: The Goddess of Justice

Getting back to his senses, Martin released a small sigh. He slowly got up and sheathed his sword, priestess Lucie still on the floor frozen in fear.

Looking at her, Martin extended his hand toward her, "I apologize for that, I didn't mean to act in such a manner, my body moved on its own".

After a few seconds passed in silence, Priestess Lucie held onto Martin's hand an awkward smile on her face, "It's fine some people are quite sensitive about getting appraised by strangers, but this is the first time somebody has gone this far", getting up she hurriedly brushed off the dust on her cassock.

Watching her every move Martin apologized again, "I'm really sorry -", stopping him priestess Lucie said, "It's really fine, either way, I need your consent to do an appraisal, it's a known rule, that's why I didn't do it when you were unconscious", eyeing Martin she continued, "Your regeneration is remarkable, but I won't dwell on it any further, just know that at the end of the day, it's a passive skill so don't get a big head and get yourself killed".

Releasing a frustrated sigh, she walked by Martin and started fixing the bed, "Speaking of getting killed, can you explain to me how you ended up like this".

Getting a seat beside the table and sipping the soup that priestess Lucie brought him, Martin told her his story of how he was living with his parents reaching the accident that almost killed him, including his grandfather's last wish, but keeping his ring and its story out of it, "Oh you poor little thing, no wonder you attacked me, after coming from an isolated forest and meeting such wicked adventurers, no wonder why you didn't trust me".

"Don't worry you are safe here, the Booty Adventurers team isn't welcomed in the eastern district after they angered one of the top district's nobles, I'll be right back just going to put this back in the kitchen", picking up the empty bowl of soup, she left the room.

A sly grin covered Martin's face, "She bought it, after pulling the empathy card she didn't question my actions any further, that solved many problems."

Putting his hand over his chest he muttered appraisal, suddenly a light blue magic circle surrounded him with two light blue magic arrays one under his feet and the other above him, the magic arrays slowly closed on each other's position, until they met at the center of the magic circle, disappearing, a window appeared in front of Martin's eyes.

Surprised by his stats, one thing caught his eye, his state, before taking a better look, priestess Lucie entered the room accompanied by three kids, seeing this Martin exclaimed, "Oh I didn't know you had kids, and three nonetheless", hearing those words Lucie's face turned bright red, "These kids aren't mine, how old do you think I am; these kids are the ones that brought you here, they were quite worried about you".

Glancing at the three youngsters in front of him, Martin took a few steps forward, "Hello, I guess I haven't formally introduced myself yet, my name is Martin Immortella, thank you for saving my life, here take this as a thank-you gift", saying those words, martin opened his leather pouch and handed over a silver coin to each of them.

Seeing the shining silver coin in their hands they said, "Thank you, sir, we are glad that you are fine", following that, they left the church.

"Priestess Lucie I would like to thank you and the church for your help, here are 5 silver coins, consider them a donation on my end. If you don't mind, I would like to leave, I have some business to attend to", priestess Lucie was ecstatic, "No need for thanks, it's the church's job to help the ones in need, but the church will accept your goodwill "

On his way-out Martin thanked all who have helped him, while being led to the exit by priestess Lucie, passing through a spacious hall with beautiful colored decorated windows, he notices a statue standing in the middle of the hall, the statue was a woman with a beautiful figure holding a spear up high as a pose of victory.

Looking back priestess Lucie saw Martin's gaze fixed on the statue, with a smile she said, "This is the statue of the goddess of justness, would you like to get a better look?", feeling something amiss, Martin nodded without uttering a word, leading him to the statue, a voice called from the opposite side of the hall, "excuse me, priestess Lucie can you come for a bit".

"One second, I'm sorry Martin, something came up, but you are free to stick around as long as you want and make sure to come to visit," a warm smile on her face, "I sure will",Martin replied with a warm smile of his own

Watching priestess Lucie until she disappeared through the doors, Martin turned his focus back on the statue. Inspecting the statue, once his eyes met with the statue's eyes he unconsciously muttered "??????".

Suddenly the church started shaking violently, and the pendant lights that held red candles started falling down and shattering on the floor. A wrathful voice was heard throughout the spacious hall, "Who are you", dodging the falling pendant light Martin stared at the statue, but this time its eyes were glowing with a golden light,

Not understanding what was going on, Martin didn't utter a word. "I asked you who are you, how do you know that name, how dare you step into this sacred space, and provoke me", the hall trembled even more violently forcing Martin to lose his balance feeling an enormous pressure pressing on him.

After a few seconds, the shaking stopped, and before Martin can think of what is going on, impulsively his legs started moving on their own, dashing through the exit and onto the street.

Back in Heaven, the goddess of justice was walking back and forth with a pale face, "Who is that mortal, no one knows that name except … except", coming to a realization, she froze solid in her place her pale face got even paler, "no it can be, he still lives, she wasn't able to kill him".

Looking at the mark on her hand she turned around and headed to the other gods, "I have to tell the other gods about this, we have hope again, now they will not stand idly by", taking several steps before going in a daze once again, "no I shouldn't be rash if they know about this new development, they will go to great lengths trying to take advantage of the situation".

Calming herself, her eyes opened wide full of uneasiness, "What if they capture him, and get information from him, I will end up as their slave, I can't let that happen, but why did he act like this, as if he never heard my voice before".

The Goddess of justice church:

The wooden doors creak slowly, appearing behind them priestess Lucie walked cautiously into the wrecked hall terror filling her eyes, everything was destroyed except the statue that stood at the center of the hall, "what in the world happened here", although the whole church shook, the hall was the only room destroyed, as if all the force was sealed inside it.

Priestess Lucie got closer to the unscathed statue, kneeling in front of it, she said, "Oh goddess of justice, hear my prayers, and lend us your protection.", following those prayers she looked up at the statue.

She saw golden lights in its eyes, "Oh hear my words my faithful believer, and heed my commands, keep that mortal safe and away from harm's way at any cost."

Hearing those words echoing throughout the empty hall, priestess Lucie stared in shock at the statue, "Mortal? But the last person who was here was …," realization dawned on priestess Lucie, "Martin, but what does he have to do with all of this?".
