Chronicles of the Modern Empress Dowager Chapter 1

Chapter 1 – A Coup in the Palace

The Xi Kang Emperor died at the age of 33, on the 18th day of November. He ruled the Qi Dynasty for 17 years. He was remembered as “kind” and his temple name was deemed “Cheng Zong”.

After the Emperor’s death, the crown prince, who was just 6 years old, inherited the throne and became the new Emperor. The following year, the era name “Xi Kang” was changed to “Chunping”. As the new Emperor ascended the throne, Li, the concubine of the Emperor’s father was acknowledged as the Empress Dowager — according to the posthumous edict of the former emperor. Two months later, Li moved into Chongqing Palace.

However, the new Emperor was young. How could he handle the daily affairs in the court? The former Emperor had taken that into account and appointed 4 Minister-Regents in his will. He also made his brother, Prince Zhao Qian, the Prince Regent. In his posthumous edict, the former emperor ordered the Minister-Regents and the Prince Regent to assist the new Emperor, together. They were to return the power of the court, back to the new Emperor when he reached the age of 16.

“Your Majesty, the Empress Dowager, I heard that the Prince Regent was testing the Emperor on his studies, in the Southern Study. His Majesty failed to answer, so the Prince Regent flogged his palm, with a ruler, as punishment.” said a maid, Wan Su, who had served Li for many years.

Empress Li frowned when she heard this and said: “He is an Emperor after all, how could the Prince Regent be so cruel.”

The maid continued, “Although the Prince Regent flogged his palms ruthlessly, the emperor held back his tears. When the Prince noticed this, he proceeded to criticize the emperor for being a sissy.”

Empress Li harrumphed, and coldly remarked: “He is making it seem as if he is lecturing his own son.” However, the Prince Regent didn’t have any sons. There were even some rumours that the man is impotent. He was already 24, but he didn’t have a single concubine — weirdo.

Later that day, Empress Li was taking an afternoon nap when she sensed someone close by. She opened an eye lazily and saw a small figure dressed in yellow.

Empress Li sat up and asked quietly, “My son, what happened?”

The emperor noticed that his mother was awake; he hurriedly rubbed his face with his large sleeves and looked up at her. There was now a bright smile on his face.

“Dear mother, I came to check up on you, and wish you a good day. But you were sleeping, so I did not disturb you.” The emperor, only 6 years old, did his best to act mature.

Looking closely at the young emperor’s face, Empress Li noticed that his eyes were still wet with tears, even though he had a bright smile on his face. She marvelled at the strength of the young emperor; he refused to cry in front of her.

“Why did you come here, my son? Are you not supposed to be learning at the study?” she asked.

“The Prince Regent and Minister-Regents came in to discuss important matters, regarding the state, so they drove me out… ” he murmured.

Empress Li seethed with rage when she heard that. She narrowed her eyes and sneered: “These unreasonable things. (T/N: 东西 = thing = a demeaning way to address someone) Come, let’s go. Let your Empress Mother take you there… ”

Empress Li summoned the palace attendants to dress her and comb her hair. She intended to take the young Emperor back to the study when the attendants were done. She intended to back the emperor up, and show those cretins who the real master of the Great Qi Dynasty really was, and humiliate everyone who had maltreated the Young Emperor.

They had barely gone out of the side hall when a palace attendant called in: “Your Majesty, the Empress Dowager, the Prince Regent begs for an audience.”

Harbouring resentment in her heart, Empress Li sneered: “He’s right on cue.”

She changed her destination and proceeded to the main hall, to wait for the Prince Regent.

Shortly, they heard footsteps down the hallway; the footsteps sounded strong and steady. By the time Empress Li raised her head, a man had already stepped over the high threshold and walked into the main hall. He was Prince Regent Zhao Qian, 24 years old, tall, and dressed in a moon-white robe with the image of a dragon embroidered on it. There was a green-gold silk court ribbon visible on his waist, and it had to a nine-dragon jade pendant attached to it. Due to his deficiency syndrome (Traditional Chinese medicine term), he appeared extremely pale and weak. However, he was extremely handsome and exuded an imposing presence. If he had any malicious intentions; he kept them easily hidden. He had a blank expression on his face. One can only wonder if expressions like these hide ulterior motives behind them. Empress Li asked in anger, albeit slightly, “Have you and your ministers finished discussing state yet?”

Zhao Qian looked askance at the Young Emperor who was by Empress Dowager’s side, and replied solemnly, “Empress Li, please calm your anger.”

Calm down? Calm down?! This unscrupulous guy had failed to show respect to the emperor’s mother, causing rage to build up in Empress Li’s heart. However, for the Young Emperor’s future, she forced herself to calm down, so she could discuss the matter, properly.

Due to their differing political views, the meeting ended in discord, as usual.

Spring passed leisurely. Empress Li woke up from her afternoon nap to a pin-drop silence in the palace. A delicate yet strong fragrance drifted in through the window and dispersed in the hall.

Empress Li leisurely stretched her arms and adjusted the soft satin cloth that she had on. She drew the bed-curtain, which had a Chinese ink painting on it, and noticed the door open slowly. It was Wan Su, who’s severed her for over a decade. Wan Su walked in holding a lacquer tray filled with sunflowers; in the middle of the tray was a teacup that had 5 bats painted on it. (T/N: Bat 蝠 is similar to blessing 福, so 5 bats is an auspicious sign of longevity)

“Is her highness awake?” Wan Su asked as she came to adjust the awning over the bed.

Empress Li coughed, and Zhesu immediately went to get the spittoon, but the empress waved her off.

Wan Su called in other servants to assist Empress Li to change into her regular outfit.

After Empress Li had washed and changed, Wan Su dismissed the other servant girls. She kneeled in front of the Empress Dowager, serving tray raised over her head, and respectfully declared, “Your Highness, here’s your tea.”

Li took the cup, opened the lid, and noticed it was ginseng tea. She frowned, “Why was this changed?” (T/N: The Author switched from “Empress Li” to “Li”, so I’ll follow suit.)

Zhesu quickly replied, “Prince Regent said that your highness needs to replenish your qi, and ginseng tea is the best for that.”

“Prince Regent? Prince Regent sent me tea? He really sticks his hands in everything, huh?”

“Your Highness, please have your tea,” Wan Su said while trembling.

Li’s focus was on the amber coloured tea, examining it, so she didn’t notice Wan Su tremble, abnormally. A moment later, she raised the cup to her lips and took a small sip.

When Wan Su saw Li take the sip, her eyes squinted with fear and she said, “Your Highness, this tea was personally delivered by the Prince Regent.”

“Prince Regent… ”

Li suddenly felt a strange pressure and an aching pain in her chest, and her mind went foggy. Even her vision blurred. There was strange taste in her mouth…

“Wan Su… you—”

Then Li collapsed.

Wan Su started crying, fully prostrate, and confessing her sins, “Your Highness, please, don’t blame me. Prince Regent was the one that wanted you dead… I’m merely a servant— “

The Prince Regent poisoned her in order to get rid of her and control the throne. How hateful! Why didn’t she realize that sooner?

Li Wei’s hands reached out and tried to hang on to something, muttering, sweating…

“Weiwei, Weiwei… ”

Li Wei opened her eyes and saw the face of an older woman’s face. The woman looked plain, probably around 40 years, and dressed in an outfit that Li didn’t recognize. The woman also had short hair that ended at ear level. She was dressed in a dark blue short robe and black pants. While groggy, Li murmured in her mind, “Is that mom?”

Li Wei looked up. Across the central beam of the roof was a single small black line that stretched down, and a small glass ball hung from it. There was a ball of light in the globe that illuminated the entire room with an orange light.

What is that?

“Weiwei, what happened to you? Say something.” The older woman asked in frustration.

Li Wei was picked as a royal servant at 14, became a royal concubine at 19, and became the Empress Dowager after two months. Nobody had called her Weiwei for years…

(T/N: Basically, she suddenly woke up in the present day world.)
