Chapter 1
Akatsuki no Yona Vol Chapter 1

‘Don’t you think we should use our time effectively?’

Jae-Ha’s serious voice echoed through the cave that they had run into for shelter from the rain.

Yun and the others stopped wringing the water out of their clothes and hair to look at him.

Jae-Ha confirmed that everyone’s gazes were on him before gracefully gesturing towards the exit.

'Look outside. With the clouds like that, the rain probably won’t stop for a while, don’t you think?’

’… Well, you’re probably right. What are you saying we should do?’

Yun thought that that he might as well hear Jae-Ha out, but he realised something after speaking –

That he probably should have just ignored Jae-Ha and said nothing.

(This is probably – definitely! – going to be no good, no doubt about it!)

Jae-Ha smiled, his almond eyes crinkling, and he continued in an ostentatious matter, with no regard towards Yun’s inner turmoil.

'Let’s do something we can’t do normally, since we’re stuck here anyway.’

There was silence, but only for a moment.

Yona, who seemed to have been thinking about the matter seriously, cocked her head and said, 'Something we can’t do normally… like shiritori[1]?’

'No, that’s not really something we need to do so formally,’ said Yun in a tone that suggested he wanted to roll his eyes. Then, Ki-Ja promptly spoke up from behind Yun.

His eyes blazed so brightly that it was possible to see them even in the dim cave.

'Do you not understand the princess’s thoughts? Jae-Ha said earlier that we should use our time effectively. It is because we would not normally do something like that that we should do it now.’

'Shiritori? Why?’

'Eh? Because, in short… to deepen our amity.’

'That’s very convincing, but what will Shin-Ah do?’

Yun’s point made Ki-Ja let out an 'Urgh’, at a loss for words.

Within this group of rather boisterous characters, Shin-Ah alone would rarely open his mouth. Though they had the minimum required level of mutual understanding, shiritori was out of the question.

(Ah, but maybe it’d be better to at least check with him…?)

Yun glanced at the entrance, where the person in question stood at guard, still wearing his furs. Since he had good ears, he could probably hear everything they were saying.

Shin-Ah’s eyes met Yun’s through his mask, and he shook his head.

Before Yun could say it was impossible, just as he’d thought, Ao called out. 'Pukyuu!’

Ao climbed off Shin-Ah’s shoulder and headed towards Yona.

'See, it’ll be fine. Shin-Ah has Ao.’

Yona let Ao climb onto her palm and smiled at him.

’… You know, that means that the person before Ao has to end all their words with “pu”, you know?’

'Wow! Suddenly the difficulty level’s jumped right up,’ Zeno said cheerfully, the complete opposite of Ki-Ja, whose eyebrows were furrowed.

'Don’t worry about the details. Things will work themselves out as we go along!’

'Right, definitely!’

'You also say some helpful things every once in a while.’

(No, no – nothing’s been solved at all, OK!?)

Before Yun could retort in response to Yona’s and Ki-Ja’s amazing airheadedness, Zeno clapped his hands together and said cheerfully, 'OK, Zeno’s going to start! If you think “ka”, it has to be “kaa-chan” (mother)!’

'Oh, it’s already over.’

'At least let everyone go once! And why did you start with “ka”!?’

Yun finally got a retort in, but he was exhausted. He plopped down onto the cloth laid out on the ground.

Hak, who was watching the scene silently across from him, seemed to want to say something in response to the exchange just now. He sopped leaning on the wall, let out a deep sigh and stood in front of Yona.

'We’re already cold, so could you stop making the temperature drop more[2]?’

Yun agreed with Hak, but Hak was talking to Yona.

As expected, Yona looked up at Hak with clear eyes and asked him, sounding confused, 'Why would the temperature drop?’

'Argh! Just explaining it would make the temperature drop even more…’ yelled Yun, at the limits of his patience. He glared at the culprit behind this.

Jae-Ha, who had put himself on the sidelines to watch, had been clutching his stomach in laughter since earlier.

'Jae-Ha, do something about this! This happened because you only ever say half-baked things while pretending they’re really clever…’

'R-right… Hehe, it was just sweeter than I thought it would be… Hehe, it just seemed like it’d be a waste to stop it…’

'I don’t want to hear your excuses. If you don’t stop laughing now, you’ll end up kicked, beaten and bound by the Thunder Beast!’

'Ah, I can’t have that.’

Hak opened his mouth, but Jae-Ha stopped laughing before Hak could say anything.

'So? What thing that we can’t do normally are we going to do?’

Now, not only Yun but Yona and the others as well were looking at Jae-Ha with interest.

Even Shin-Ah, who had finished wringing out his furs, which had been wet from the rain, had silently approached them.

The only exception was Hak, who was leaning against the wall again, his sharp gaze pointed downwards.

Jae-Ha gave Hak an amused glance before suddenly spreading out his arms.

'Young men and women of about the same age are living together! You should have a number of things on your mind! No – it’d be strange if there weren’t any! And troubles should be solved quickly.’

’… And?’

If Yun commented on everything, they would never get to the point. He held in his desire to retort and reluctantly urged Jae-Ha to continue.

Jae-Ha gave him a big nod in response and then said in a loud voice, 'So let me declare this the start of the first ever Big Brother Jae-Ha’s Counselling Room!’

Yun suddenly had no idea what was happening.

Hak swung his sword and Jae-Ha evaded it nimbly. Yun blinked once, and then the tip of the sword was in the wall.

And it was right beside Jae-Ha’s face.

'That would only make the temperature drop more, so give us a break…’

'Oh? I thought that my fervent speech would’ve heated things right up.’

As Hak and Jae-Ha both smiled, both putting up a feint for the other.

Though Yun thought there was nothing he could do there, he glanced up at Yona, who stood beside him.

Yona would normally rebuke the two of them, but she seemed troubled.

'Yona, what are you thinking about?’

’… Jae-Ha’s suggestion would be something like a comment box then.’

Her serious tone made Yun gulp.

Yona’s slightly unoccupied smile had vanished, leaving just a bright light in her eyes.

'I think that living with other people will always cause some form of discontent. Even if there isn’t, if anyone has anything troubling them, I want to hear it, and if possible, I want to solve it together.’

Yona’s words made the cave grow quiet.

Her eyes landed on each of them. Yun held his breath unconsciously.

'So she says. What’re you going to do, Hak?’

Jae-Ha called out to Hak. He had to have done that on purpose.

’… There’s nothing else I can do, right?’

With a sigh, Hak put his sword on his shoulders and returned to his position by the wall.

As Yun watched this, he murmured to himself, 'Well, of course.’ Once Yona decided something, she would not budge even a step. Everyone present knew that.

'Then who’s going to start?’ asked Yun, looking about him. Jae-Ha responded immediately.

'Of course it should be Hak, who looks like he has tons of troubles, and Ki-Ja, who’s in the prime of his life.’

'That’s you, isn’t it? Well, I can’t deny what you said about the White Dragon… Ah?’

Just when Yun thought that a light banter was going to start, Hak looked to his side and froze.

Yun thought it strange and so followed his gaze, which let him see Ki-Ja crying a waterfall of tears.

'Wha!? Ki-Ja, what’s wrong?’

'The p-princess’s kindness… just struck me so…’

'Ki-Ja, you’re exaggerating.’

Yuna’s giggling figure made Ki-Ja cry even more. He was saying something, looking deeply moved, but it was impossible to make out the words.

Yun cleared his throat and stood up, looking once more at everyone.

'Hey, isn’t there anyone?’

'Troubles, troubles…’

The first person to respond was Zeno, unexpectedly. He crossed his arms and furrowed his brows. He seemed to be thinking seriously, which was rare for him.

'Ah, I have one!’

Zeno clapped his hands together and looked up.

Ki-Ja sniffled and looked towards Zeno as well to see what he would say.

'The Blue Dragon’s…’

(Eh, Shin-Ah!?)

Another unexpected development had come. Yun’s eyes went wide.

He had been surprised already by the fact that Zeno had troubles when he looked the picture of carefree, but his trouble had something to do with Shin-Ah, who was the most harmless of the seven people here…

Even Shin-Ah seemed anxious enough that it was obvious even through his mask.

In that strange atmosphere, Zeno said, incredibly serious…

'The Blue Dragon’s fluffy fur… Why is it so comfy?’

That moment, time stopped.

Yun’s mouth gaped. Jae-Ha said, in the manner of an old wise man, 'It’s like this.’ It felt like he did want to bring things together, but his voice was shaking, as if he was holding in his laughter.

'That’s not a trouble. That’s a question.’

'The answer’s in the question!’

Yun retorted with all his energy, but then he heard Hak murmur something behind him.

'I see, so something like that is fine…’

(Ah. I have another bad feeling.)

Even though the bad feeling didn’t have to be right, Yun’s intuition was right on the mark.

Hak slowly raised his hand and spoke with a very serious expression.

'It’s annoying when this pervert from somewhere sometimes tries to act like a big brother just because he’s the oldest.’

'Hm, that’s not a trouble – it’s just complaining.’

Hak and Jae-Ha looked at each other, sparks flying. Yun just sighed. He didn’t know how many sighs that made.

Just as he’d thought, it was impossible for them to talk about their troubles. Though some of it came from unconscious differences, he didn’t think they could have a proper conversation.

However, Yona still seemed to be full of eagerness. Together with Ao, she turned towards Shin-Ah.

'How about you, Shin-Ah? Is anything troubling you?’

Shin-Ah cocked his head. Ki-Ja seemed to have recovered, as he added, 'The princess has been so kind as to ask you. It would be best to say what you think without holding back.’

’… Trouble…’

Though it was very faint, Shin-Ah spoke, which was unusual.

Ki-Ja nodded happily a number of times.

'Yes,’ said Yona, waiting for Shin-Ah to continue without hurrying him.

’… Ao…’

'Pukyu?’

Ao called out from Yona’s shoulder, like he understood that his name had been called.

'Ao… is a bit fatter, I think…’

'My, that is a problem.’

Finally, a proper problem. Yun could go with this.

’… Well, yes. Suddenly gaining weight can burden the body.’

Yona pet Ao gently with a finger, but her expression had clouded over.

'We need to watch out for him too. He’s so cute when his cheeks are stuffed with food that I just end up feeding him…’

'But as you say that, he’s just eating your hair, isn’t he, Yona!?’

You couldn’t take your eyes off this squirrel. Yun picked Ao up from Yona’s shoulder and scolded him.

'Reprimanding legendary dragons and squirrels – I can’t keep up…’

'Is that your trouble?’

Yona peered at him, which made Yun gulp.

(Yona’s really close! She’s too defenceless!)

Though Yun had a mountain of troubles, he hesitated to say it directly.

In the end, Yun began, 'If I had to say,’ and chose his words in a slightly meandering way.

’… Recently, people seem to forget that I’m a pretty “boy”.’

'We haven’t forgotten.’

'No, you have.’

The emotions in Yun’s immediately reply didn’t seem to reach Yona at all.

Yun let out a deep sigh, so Jae-Ha spoke, looking like a man of the world.

'That is to say that even beautiful things have a gender.’

Of course the sex-obsessed dragon seemed to understand what Yun wanted to say.

Yun turned the conversation to Ki-Ja before things turned troublesome.

Ki-Ja looked truly concerned as he hmmed to himself.

Yun didn’t have to say anything. Ki-Ja himself seemed to have realised that he hadn’t revealed his own troubles yet and felt it necessary to say something.

(But if I let him continue like that, something strange might be born…)

The endless mumbling made Yun want to hold his head in his hands.

It would probably be better if he helped here.

'Ki-Ja, you always tell us your troubles, so maybe you’ve used them up already.’

Yun’s words made Yona say, 'Eh?’

'Perhaps that is the case…’

'Yona, you should’ve heard them too. Like how he’s afraid of insects.’

Though Yun thought he had been convincing, his words seemed to alarm Ki-Ja.

Ki-Ja let out a voiceless scream and then objected furiously, 'I never said I was s-s-s-scared!’

Ki-Ja was putting up a strong front, but Hak just smirked.

'White Dragon, there is a centipede at your feet…’

'Gya!? S-stay away! Keep away from me!’

Ki-Ja was in a frenzy, but Yona, beside him, looked at the ground calmly.

Then, she looked up and puffed her cheeks out like Ao as she glared at Hak.

'Hak, there’s no centipede.’

'I apologise. I must have mistaken something else for it.’

Though Hak was apologising, he had his usual mischievous smile. Yun didn’t have to ask – it was clear that Hak had been making fun of Ki-Ja.

NOTES:

[1] Shiritori is a word game where participants take turns saying words using the last character of the word before them. The game ends when a participant says a word that ends in 'n’. For example: senpai, ichigo, goron.

[2] In Japan (and China too, actually), a joke that is bad is said to make you feel cold. (You shudder because the joke is so bad.)
