(Part 5)
After that, Cougar and I had nothing to say, so we stared at one another.
*Ding Dong*
“Sorry for the wait!”
Such bad timing… No, perhaps it was the right moment to arrive.
Lucca returned to the store looking even more beautiful than before, now that she had changed out of her work clothes.
Her outfit conveyed a seasonal feeling with its autumn hues; the skirt was trimmed with a lovely ribbon. Her headdress was the same as always, but a crystal necklace shone around her neck, reflecting the light. It was the one that Cougar bought at one of the accessory shops in En Passant Marketplace for Lucca… I recalled him telling me that at one point.
“Hahaha, you’ve turned into a beautiful princess,” the prince said to her in a tone so gentle that it wasn’t even slightly possible to sense the atmosphere from before.
“Is… Is that so? I’m happy.” Lucca’s embarrassed visage was loveable; even from the perspective of a girl like myself, she was completely enchanting.
“Let’s all go out together once you feel better, ok?” Lucca showed concern for me until the last moment, yet ultimately, I didn’t want to meet her gaze.
*Ding Dong*
The two of them opened the door and went out amicably; as I watch them off, I reached a decision. At that time, I was already thinking of postponing my hunt of Archwitch Meyrin for Lucca’s sake.
Lucca isn’t a witch. I’m sure she’s just a normal human, but…
The girl that seduced the man I love has to be a witch, after all.
I must exterminate witches. A warped zeal burned my body, as I calmly stared out the window at the street, where I saw the silhouettes of the pair gradually disappear.
Cougar might be angered by my choice. He might come to hate me. But I have to do it. I have to protect the prince…I have to protect Cougar.
At that moment, I suddenly heard a faint tapping. It was so soft that at first I thought it was my imagination, but then there was knock at the door of the store.
A client would just enter normally, and yet…
As the thought crossed my mind, I heard a whispering voice coming through the crevice of the door. “Lucca, Lucca! Are you there? If you are there, answer me!”
Instinct told me what to do: open the door and take a look at the person beyond the doorway. The doorbell chimed when I opened the door of the bakery; then, I saw a lone woman concealing her figure by bending forward.
“It’s me. I came today to say goodbye-” Even though it was spring already, the seasonal winds were still somewhat chilly. Despite that, the woman was wearing so little it was unbelievable.
I, having curled my fingers around the doorknob, couldn’t stop the corners of my mouth from turning upwards.
“Wh- Who are you?” Seemingly surprised to see a face she wasn’t expecting, the woman immediately backed away from me.
What expression I had in front of that woman, I wonder?
“Me? I’m…” The holy weapons under my robes activated with a flowing movement. Faced with my prey suddenly appearing before me, I was forced to rectify the plans I had been thinking about until moments earlier. However, that didn’t bother me.
After all…
“I’m the one that will exterminate all witches!”
