Chapter 23: Yiqin of Esports

A lot of people know about video games, a lot of people also know about esports.

But who knows how many esports clubs there are, how many professional tournaments there are, and what are the most prestigious tournaments?

Otakus are everywhere and players are numerous. Then why does everyone know about the NBA and CBA[1], but not many people know about the G League, LPL, and IMBA stand for?

Many know about Barcelona, the Lakers, and the Rockets; but how many know which esports club wins international championships at various esports competitions in popular games like DotA, LoL, Warcraft III, Starcraft, or CrazyRacing KartRider?

Few know these facts.

There are obviously numerous players, numerous game lovers, however the rise and fall of several esports clubs hasn’t received any attention at all.

The rewards are only meager money amounts for those heroes who won international honors. There’s no respect, no glory.

Yiqin, GTV event planner and game commentator, felt quite helpless with the lack of attention esports had.

Yiqin had been in the esports business since her sophomore year in college. She was still in the business after graduation. With the development of the internet, esports had begun to gain popularity.

But it is far from enough.

Overseas, esports has developed into a regular business and the professional players also received a salary and the honor they deserved.

Back in this country, professional players have yet to earn an ounce of respect.

After another one of her applications was rejected, she felt tired and lied down on the bed without taking off her business suit.

She was an attractive woman. Perhaps, just as her family had told her, she could easily find a good family to marry herself off to and enjoy the easy life of a wealthy wife.  She didn’t have to struggle in this esports business that no one saw a future in.

But she loved esports from the bottom of her heart.

She put her hands behind her head, with eyes wide open, staring at the vanilla colored wall facing her bed.

There was a poster on that wall; it had been there for quite some time.

The person on the poster was laughing. She didn’t know why but everytime she saw that smile, she felt like crying.

“Ong~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ong~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ong~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~”

Her cell phone next to the bed rang. Yiqin didn’t reacted to it after a while.

When she saw the number of the incoming call, her pretty face scrunched in irritation.

“Hello, dad.” Yiqin feebly answered.

“Have you packed all your stuff!” A cold voice came from the other end.

“Not yet.” Yiqin replied.

“Then hurry up. You want me to go pack for you?”

“Dad, I don’t want to go abroad.” Yiqin said.

“Your mom and I came back from the U.S. specifically to bring you over with us. You tell me you don’t want to go? Don’t throw a tantrum. The flight is on Sunday; get everything packed tonight!” The man ordered.

“Dududu~dududu~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~”

The other end hung up the phone.

Yiqin disappointedly threw the cell down and tears welled up in her eyes.

“Why do they always force me to do things that I don’t want to do!”

Yiqin buried her face in the blanket and tears came down.

They went abroad when she was ten years old and only came back to visit every one or two years.

When she was lonely, she played internet games and pc games which became part of her life.

After she grew up, she was not afraid of being alone anymore. But her parents turned around to abuse their parental authority now of all times and forced her to go work in a finance company!

Over there, the salary for one day was higher than what she earned here in a month.

But once she was over there, it would be so boring that one day would feel longer than a month!!

By evening, Yiqin was so tired from crying that she had lost her appetite for dinner. She went to the bathroom, took off her business suit, took a shower, and changed into a clean, comfortable robe.

After she had adjusted her mood, she picked up the phone to call her colleague.

“Hello, Yiqin jie, do you have some other things you want me to do?” It was a young lady’s voice at the other end.

“I’m leaving tomorrow. You will be handling all the event planning at GTV from now on.” Yiqin said.

“Ah? Leaving tomorrow? But I have a lot of things that I don’t know how to do still. Yiqin jie……” The young lady seemed a bit flustered.

“I have made a deal with the sponsor. It will start around mid June. You just follow what I have listed on that form. You can make adjustments when it actually starts.  You’re smart, so you’ll pick it up very easily.” Yiqin warmly said with a smile.

“But…...Yiqin jie, we don’t want you to go. There aren’t many brilliant female commentators like Yiqin jie, if you leave……” The young lady said.

“It’s alright. There will be girls who truly love esports. They will be even more talented, more beautiful, and attract more attention……” Yiqin painfully said.

“Then, Yiqin jie, let us give you a going away party tonight. Let’s have a going away dinner together.” The young lady said.

“I have a date tonight. Don’t have a party, I’ll feel even worse.” Yiqin hung up the phone after she finished talking.

The more she talked about it the heavier her heart felt.

After working hard in the esports business for so many years, was she going to give up like that?

“Ai, how do I say goodbye to him.”

Yiqin turned on her computer, plugged in the earphones.

She just bought this pair of earphones. Usually she had to wear earphones at the studio and sometimes she felt uncomfortable after wearing it for too long. Therefore, she never kept earphones at home.

As QQ turned on, Yiqin found the person she was waiting for already online.

She couldn’t figure it out why but everytime she saw his status icon lit, she would feel like smiling.

As usual, she sent over a smiling face.

It seemed that the other side was waiting, too, and returned a ‘horny’ expression right away.

Yiqin curled up her lips and scolded “pervert.”

“To prevent any mistakes, let’s voice chat?”

“Ah? I forgot to buy the microphone!”

“It can’t be. You know how long I have waited for today.  Give me your address, I’ll mail one to you.”

“Hum, are you trying to get my address? Are you trying to sneak to my home?”

“You have unhealthy thoughts.”

“You are the one who’s unhealthy!”

“Alright then, we will have to rely on our telepathy this time to bust bot!”

“I lied. I just bought a brand new one. You send the invitation over.”

“For real! ! ! !”

“Send it.”

Far away in the city of Lecheng, Yu Luocheng was so excited when he saw those words.

Finally, finally, finally he could hear her voice!

He had to calm down!

He had to prepare for whatever happens. What if it was a male’s voice from the other end!

What if it was a female? ?

Even a female with a sweet voice? ? ?
