“You were very popular with the girls back then; our dormitory also consisted of some of your fans. I'm very happy and sincerely hope that you find an other half that you genuinely like. I admired you then and I still respect you deeply.”

“You say you hope that I find an other half that I genuinely like. When in actuality, I've found it early on. Yuntong, you clearly know the purpose of me coming here today. No matter what the outcome is, I won't push myself away and give up if certain words aren't said.” Guan Zexi actually extended his hands across the table and grabbed Zheng Yuntong's wrist.

The grip of his hands was not weak, shackling Zheng Yuntong. It hurt to a minor extent.

Zheng Yuntong felt displeased in her heart as she shot a glance at the hands that held her wrist. She wanted to break free, yet she could not do anything about it.

Guan Zexi was adamant about wanting to say his piece to her. Zheng Yuntong's reluctance to listen was out of the question.

Whatever, everything had to be said in one go, lest he came and looked for her once again.

“Yuntong,” he called; the previous hint of seriousness in his tone had disappeared and the tone became gentle and soft once more. “Previously when I thought about confessing my feelings for you. I wanted to first ensure I was successful so I could stand before you confidently. In a sense, I wanted to make others who like you feel inferior so they would stop chasing you. I wanted you to be able to show me off proudly and introduce me to people as your boyfriend; one who's young and has a successful career. I kept persevering until I reached the level of success I have now; the sole reason was because of you. At my toughest and saddest moments where I felt like my whole body was consumed in darkness, there was always a beam of light when I thought of you. My entire mind is flooded with images of your bright smile. By thinking of the vibrant aura you give off, I'd have the vigor to be able to continue again. Yuntong, I don't want to just be a senior, especially not an elder brother. Will you give me a chance to be your boyfriend?”

Zheng Yuntong did not hesitate this time and was not distressed over how to reject him.

Maybe it was due to Guan Zexi's series of actions that she felt repelled, but she did not really care whether it hurt his heart or not.

“Sorry, Senior. In my eyes, you're only a senior and——” Zheng Yuntong took a deep breath, “I already like someone else. I don't know whether he likes me or not and if it's possible for us to be together but I'm willing to continue chasing him. Because of this crush, I can't accept anyone else.”

“Who's that person?” Guan Zexi asked while frowning, “Is he from your company?”

His unpleasant tone gave the impression that he wanted to interrogate her after learning of this other person.

Zheng Yuntong shook her head, “It's still nothing more than a secret crush; I don't want to cause problems for him. In fact, it has nothing to do with Senior whether I like someone. I regarded Senior as just a senior in the past; I still see you as one now and I'll do so in the future as well.”

However, Guan Zexi seemed like he did not comprehend what she said and was still at a loss. He was still focused on the question he asked, “It isn't Wei Zilin, right? I know he's outstanding. For young ladies, Wei Zilin would be akin to something like an expensive and gorgeous trophy. It wouldn't take anyone by surprise if you liked him, but a romantic relationship between the two of you would be impossible.”

“It's not him; he's only a boss to me. I don't have unrealistic fantasies. The person I like is an ordinary person, not a boss of some company.” Zheng Yuntong became somewhat annoyed, “Senior, you don't need to know who it is. Even if there wasn't anyone else, it still wouldn't be. Please stop pestering me. Retain some of the respect that I still have for you, okay?”

Guan Zexi opened his mouth and was about to speak up again but was interrupted by the ringtone of Zheng Yuntong's cell phone.

Zheng Yuntong glanced at the incoming call and it was from Shen Zongyi.

For some unknown reason, joy and sweetness welled up in her heart from merely seeing his name even though he was not present.

Her originally tensed face had visibly relaxed. Zheng Yuntong herself was unaware that the corners of her lips were curled upwards like a little girl who was in love.

Guan Zexi's gaze was blank; he was somewhat indignant and unwilling to let go.

Zheng Yuntong had just picked up the phone call and before she could speak Shen Zongyi asked coldly, “You're on a date?”

Zheng Yuntong could not tell if she felt was happy or nervous as she was afraid that he misunderstood. These kinds of situations were difficult to explain but she did not feel worried.

Even though she was confronted by Shen Zongyi's hostile question, she did not feel it was excessive in the slightest. However, the same could not be said if it was Guan Zexi.

“Is this the case? Alright, I'll return at once.” Zheng Yuntong hung up the phone call hastily and told Guan Zexi in a rather apologetic manner, “Senior, sorry. The company has something urgent so I must return to the office immediately.”

She stood up, hesitated for a bit and said, “Let's go dutch for the meal.”

Guan Zexi followed after her and also stood up, “I told you that I want to treat you to lunch. Don't feel embarrassed because you just rejected me a moment ago.”

Raising his hand to take a glance at the wristwatch, he seemed to intentionally let Zheng Yuntong get a good look at the brand of the watch as it was not cheap, “I'll send you back.”

Standing outside the restaurant, Shen Zongyi put down his phone. Shen Zongyi actually laughed when she finished speaking and hung up the phone call so abruptly just now. Looking into the restaurant through the glass windows, he looked like a complete creep to outsiders.

The customers eating a meal by the window found a very big living person was peering in through the window. Horror instantly spread across their faces when they had spotted Shen Zongyi; on the other hand, Shen Zongyi was completely nonchalant as he was oblivious to what was happening.

One of the two young ladies who passed by behind him subtly pointed at Shen Zongyi and quietly whispered to her companion, “Seeing that he dresses quite well, why doesn't he have money to eat?”

Shen Zongyi was speechless.

He saw that the two of them had stood up and Guan Zexi looked like he wanted to see Zheng Yuntong off, but he could not hear Zheng Yuntong's reply. Shen Zongyi quickly turned around and began to walk toward the entrance. Upon entering the restaurant, he calmly walked to Zheng Yuntong's side with large strides.

Guan Zexi and Zheng Yuntong were both shocked by his sudden appearance. Shen Zongyi nodded toward Guan Zexi and greeted him in a respectful manner. Then, he told Zheng Yuntong, “I just received a call that I have to return to the company to deal with work-related matters. I heard that all departments must return as soon as possible. When I passed by this restaurant just now and saw that you were here as well, so I came over to fetch you on my way back.”

The excuse she cooked up just now was made ad-lib yet Shen Zongyi's excuse had coincidentally lined up perfectly with it. His expression was so solemn and serious that Zheng Yuntong could not help but doubt. Could it be that she unintentionally conjured up an authentic excuse and she indeed had to return to the company to work overtime?

“Oh, then that's great.” Zheng Yuntong said in haste and told Guan Zexi, “Senior, it's fine. I'll return with Assistant Shen. You didn't eat much, so why don't you finish eating here before you leave? You don't need to send me.”

After they finished talking, she then left with Shen Zongyi.

However, Shen Zongyi stopped when he reached the checkout counter by the entrance. He turned around and told the cashier sitting inside, “I'll pay the bill for table no. 7.”

Zheng Yuntong gaped open her mouth. How could I have the nerve to let Shen Zongyi cover the bill for a meal she had with Guan Zexi?

However, Shen Zongyi shot her a cold glance to make Zheng Yuntong shut up.

He then left with Zheng Yuntong after paying. As his pace was somewhat quick, Zheng Yuntong had to chase after him just to catch up.

“Assistant Shen, I'll return the money to you once I return, okay?” Zheng Yuntong said.

“There's no need.” Shen Zongyi said faintly.

“How am I supposed to not feel ashamed? You weren't the one who ate so how can I let you pay for the meal?” Zheng Yuntong said.

“Am I supposed to let him treat you instead?” Shen Zongyi narrowed his eyes, turned his head and glared at her.

Zheng Yuntong immediately withdrew her neck, as she wanted to say that it would have at least been acceptable if she treated him instead. However, under Shen Zongyi's intimidating gaze, she stopped herself from speaking.

“Oh yeah, Assistant Shen, do we actually have to return to the company to work overtime?” Zheng Yuntong asked again.

“No, weren't you making up an excuse that there was something on at the company during the phone call just now? I just spoke based on what you said.” Shen Zongyi sensed that Zheng Yuntong was slightly panting so Shen Zongyi slowed down his footsteps gradually to match Zheng Yuntong's pace.

He was slightly angry just now, which was why his pace had increased subconsciously. Now that he calmed down, he stopped walking to let Zheng Yuntong catch her breath.

Zheng Yuntong did not receive any care from Shen Zongyi, but she was still glad she could stop and rest for a while.

“What's wrong? Didn't you have a pleasant conversation with your senior? Why would you make an excuse to leave so abruptly?” Shen Zongyi looked suspiciously at her, “Weren't you rather happy when you met him earlier?”

“It wasn't bad, but it was far from pleasant. I just met someone I knew well but haven't seen in a long time. It felt close and dear.” Zheng Yuntong shook her head, “But I might not stay in touch with him from now on.”
