The Great Conqueror Chapter 5

Chapter 5 – Beast Spirit Engraver

When Ou Nisi Te opened his dreary eyes early in the morning, his wounds had already healed a decent amount and Ya Se was already no longer next to him. Let’s not say that he’s very resilient to being beaten….

“Older brother, what are you doing, is this a new technique?”, Ou Nisi Te curiously asked as he watched Ya Se energetically performing his maneuvers. Perhaps his brother had gained an understanding on some techniques over the past few days.

Zuo Liang blushed and almost tripped himself up. Thinking back on how he had wasted around half a month in this world, he thought that it was a pity since he now has many things he wishes to achieve.

“Nothing, just doing some exercise. Are you going to do your morning exercises now?”

“Yes”, Ou Nisi Te honestly laughed.

“How do you practice?”

“How? Doesn’t everyone practice the same way?”, Ou Nisi Te replied finding it strange.

The memories that Ya Se left were not completely comprehensive as some were reflexively overlooked. When Zuo Liang first arrived in this world and his memories were merged with Ya Se’s, he had disregarded it as a dream, then afterwards everything became disordered as he trudgingly lived day by day.

Ou Nisi Te’s daily practice involved lifting a large rock ….. Then putting it back down ….. Then lifting it up again …… Then putting it back down, finally proceeding to incline his head towards the sky beating his chest and yelling. (He assumed that Ya Se would think that it was too noisy so he only did this much, else he would’ve screamed instead).

Zuo Liang was stupefied, this…. Was called practice???

This could train someone into a warrior?

Zuo Liang vomited blood, yesterday he had carefully pondered on some things. The most key part to being successful was how the first step is taken. Even though this world was very developed but he still believed that he had an advantage. However a lot of the concepts could not be compared equally to his previous worlds, if he had an opportunity to apply these it could become some kind of job 1,  that would let Ou Nisi Te and him easily live a happy life.

Currently the most important thing was not to become stronger but to thoroughly understand this world and its constitution. Zuo Liang was conscious of how he used to be a research student, he was not stupid either. They say only when a person is under pressure can they draw their full potential to achieve what is necessary to be done, this potential when drawn out was unmeasurable.

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”, Zuo Liang glanced at Ou Nisi Te.

Ou Nisi Te scratched his head and stated “I don’t know, I feel that big brother is not quite the same, but I can’t clearly understand why.”

Zuo Liang smiled, he was not anxious to change Ou Nisi Te’s daily martial training. He had to plan carefully so he let him continue his little routine for now.

As they were low ranked students they lived in the most remote parts of the school and were also given the worst provisions. Ya Se was very dissatisfied by this at first, but now he was very satisfied with the location as few people came and annoy them.

In the morning, Zuo Liang listened with matchless concentration; listening and summarising. The beastman’s educational system could be counted as pretty good however to an experienced person in cramming and memorising all information thrown at them, it could only be counted as too easy. Especially as he was a science student, and compared to that damned advanced mathematics, this could only be considered of lower difficulty.

However to Ou Nisi Te this without a doubt is like incomprehensible writings. Nobles and merchants would often hire professional teachers of their respectable disciplines to teach their children. This was because the War Academy mainly taught common subjects.

In the afternoon Zuo Liang impatiently scoffed down his food before he rushed to the library. Honestly speaking beastmen did not appreciate reading books; unless one needed to obtain information or they were a non-combatant student they would not be seen in the library. However the library was pretty well made.

Speed reading and speed summarising to someone who had made their way through the black hearted university entrance exams could only be counted as a small dish of vegetables. Zuo Liang studied with a new passion like a maiden having her second shot at love, trying to understand within the depths of his heart. After an hour he had finished reading four books in regards to the history of the Meng Jia Empire.

The Empire had experienced many different periods such as the Monarchy period, the Theocratic period, there were even periods that had Beastmen Emperors. But for these past few centuries it has been under the control of the Theocracy, where the Pope was considered the ruler. The administrators of the empire were the magistrate and the civil officer, the magistrate governed over politics while the civil officer held the power to veto2. These lofty positions were usually held by the Tai Ge tribe or the Lai Yin tribe 3, this was a trick that the pope used to keep the powers in balance, the imperial theory seemed to be the same regardless of the world.

Zuo Liang considered reading history akin to reading stories. All eight provinces were rather similar where eight lords guarded each province respectively. Each of these lords were the highest magistrate of their province. The Theocratic power and the Monarchy obviously had their relationships and conflicts. This was as the Meng Jia Empires history was written by the struggles of these two powers. 4

However in this world one entity piqued Zuo Liang’s interest, this was as an entity that had to be respected even by the Theocracy and the Monarchy and still remained powerful through the centuries of power struggle. Zuo Liang understood that for an entity to remain powerful it must be sufficiently large, also through the conflicts of these powers the amount of riches and strength they obtained would be unimaginable, to the extent that it would induce the jealousy of others. However they still managed to stay safe and sound, what exactly was this entity?

The Spirit Engraving Master’s!

Any Beastman would look up to and not wish to offend one holding this status.

To Beastmen, being able to utilize Beast Transformation was more important than their lives, this transformation would decide the future of a beastman. As the Spirit Engraving Masters directed this process, not a single beastman would be willing to separate with one. Regardless of whether you were the pope or the highest ranking magistrate as the higher grade you were, the more you relied on a Spirit Engraving master. For example a high grade Beast Transformation would require the cooperation of a high grade Engraving Master.

The entity that organised these Spirit Engraving Masters was a place called the Spirit Engraving Master Guild, a place that no one could offend.

If the temple was considered a place that one must take in mind not to offend, the Spirit Engraving Masters Guild would an entity that no one would offend. 5

If a beastman managed to accumulate enough beast spirit they would still need to obtain the help of a Spirit Engraving master to help them upgrade their Beast Transformation or Armour Transformation. Let’s say if one did offend a Spirit Engraving master the Engraving master could be neglectful causing one to expend a lot of Beast Spirit so much so that the upgrade could even fail; even then you couldn’t even curse. To all beastmen and especially the high grade beastmen this was a very difficult burden to carry.

Take Ou Nisi Te as an example, as he has already failed twice. Though he was very carefree he would go through a period of depression each time he failed: failing was truly painful.

The Spirit Engraving Masters Guild was not a charity service. So people like Ou Nisi Te with no money, no influence and no notable talent they could only follow the foundational guidance the academy provided to achieve Beast Transformation. Ou Nisi Te’s talent was obviously very poor as he had failed twice in a row already.

Zuo Liang closed his thick book and closed his fatigued eyes with the countless cells in his brain operating at high speeds.

I used job here as the chinese word is actually closer to job than occupation and also I did not want the occupation in the story (Archer, Assassin etc) to be mixed up with his daily job  Veto is the power to turn down decisions or proposal made  These tribes are of the Tiger or Lion tribes  Previously the Theocracy and the Monarchy was mentioned as the Church and the Secular Council as there was no significant evidence that they were ruled under these powers  They have used Temple, Church and Shrine interchangeably
