Chapter 11: Eos and Styx (1)
Watching the four Titans fight to the bitter death high above the azure, Themis' eyes blurred with pools of melancholic sadness.
In their youth, Phoebe and Theía looked similar in appearance. Their godhood was also similar; one was in charge of the radiant light in the world and the other in charge of bright intellects and glory. Amongst the twelve Titans, their relationship seemed better than all the others.
Hence… Themis never imagined she'd see the two close sisters fight.
Phoebe and Theía we're dressed in white chiffon. Their hands moved about countless times as they drew powers from their godhood. Flashes of light roamed in the sky.
They restrained themselves.
The same could also be said for Coeus and Hyperion. Their battle looked lazy and comfortable, but to the mortals, the sight would only make them run to the Underworld.
Coeus and Hyperion put their battle armor on. Coeus held a spear as his bow and arrow rested on his back whereas Hyperion settled with a lance.
When Hyperion waved his lance, shooting stars fell onto the world and a raging sea of fire burned the lands.
The fight between the Titans lasted many days and night. During the day, Hyperion, God of Heavenly Light, had the advantage, but as night fell, Coeus dominated the battle.
Zeus stood atop of Olympus as he watched the ongoing battle from high above. Though there are gods numerous in numbers and strength, there were only a few able to compete with the Titans. They were Zeus, Hera, and Themis. The other gods wield no such power as they've yet to release their godhood to its maximum potential or they were minor gods who held no such importance.
But nevertheless, the battle of the Titans allowed them to fully comprehend the world of the Titans and powers.
Zeus hadn't closed his eyes. His eyes remained opened all throughout. There were no signs of sadness and disappointment found in his eyes.
As for Hera who was always depressed felt slightly relieved at the moment.
Since the birth of Artemis and Apollo, she returned to Olympus with longings of having children of her own with Zeus. Though her wish was fulfilled and gave birth to a boy, she grew frightened of her child's monstrous appearance. Remembering Iris speak of Apollo who was not only handsome and lovely, Hera felt rage blooming from depths of her heart. Out of fury, she threw her child out of Olympus, not once bothering to name him.
She didn't tell Zeus of the matter, only stating her child died from birth. Saddened, Zeus comforted her and complied to her wishes.
The fight between the Titans lasted for seven days and nights. Not only the gods on Olympus, the major and minor gods elsewhere paid close attention to the battles of the Titans. This had been the first great conflict between the gods after Cronus and his bands were imprisoned to Tartarus.
The gods knew that after this battle, the Titans will slowly fall apart. They'd have no power to go against Zeus and his two brothers.
Soon, the era of the Titans would end and new gods would rise. The threads of fate and destiny seemed ever so clear.
Zeus grew impatient of the battle that he called the Nine Muses and request they liven the mood with their art. The gods and goddesses soon danced and sang to their heart's content as an ongoing battle occurred above them.
Standing next to Zeus, Themis' delicate brows wrinkled. The air near her was silent and she said nothing as she looked above bitterly.
From a faraway place, many gods whispered amongst each other.
"Is the new King of Gods chosen merely because of Mother Gaia? Nothing more than this?"
"Each god who takes the mantle as King of Gods are really worse off from generation after generation."
"Not to mention Uranus, he is far worse than Cronus."
At this time, the standstill battle in the azure began to change. During daylight, streams of fireballs extracted from the sun attacked Coeus. At night, the white moonlight that was like a sharp sword shot at Phoebe.
Coeus and Phoebe who'd been evenly matched with their counterparts began extracting energy sources from the sun and moon which ultimately led to Coeus and Phoebe's downfall.
Dawn came and it was the eighth day. The sun and moon lighted the sky at the same time. Coeus was stabbed on his lower abdomen by Hyperion's lance. Phoebe was by Theia's light spell.
They coughed violently and spat out a deep red liquid.
Hyperion looked at Theia. Each had thoughts of finishing the battle. On the other side, Coeus and Phoebe knelt down weakly. They thought they'd face another rounds of attack only to have a sharp pain running through Theia's stomach. Her body grew weak as she leaned on Hyperion.
Coeus and Phoebe saw an open door of opportunity and hurriedly flew far away from Olympus. Hera seeing their escape flew in rage. She stood up ready to attack and capture them only for her path to be blocked by the Goddess of Justice, Themis.
Themis stood in front of her with an expressionless look. Hera knew she'd not be able to do anything when the Goddess of Justice makes a move so she merely laughed and returned to her seat.
Zeus looked at the scene in front of him and said nothing. He looked towards the direction Coeus and Phoebe fled to and did not react. Instead, he went quickly to Theia's side and inquired of her situation.
"Most likely the strains of the fight took a toll on her body and affected the fetus." Hyperion revealed that his wife was pregnant with his child, however, Zeus already knew of it. Because of this, they decided to stay in Olympus to hell enhance the strength of their children.
The universe endowed the gods with divine power but the power given was neither endless nor immutable. If the gods wished to improve their own strength, they'd need to understand a divine position. During the process, the gods would use their comprehension to gain a deeper understanding of the laws of the universe and their divine gift.
This is the prerequisite for a god to further step into godhood. Moreover, there exists major divine positions which only a major god can wield due to its strict requirements. Whoever holds such divine positions can increase their understanding of the laws of the universe and strengthen the powers of their divine gifts at a faster pace.
