The enemy ships seem to falter after taking the bombardment.

The ally ships adjust their rudders carefully to maneuver in between enemy ships, unleashing a barrage of cannonfire.
It can be considered point-blank range so the enemy fleet has started to suffer casualties too.

No matter how close the ships get, those small cannons can't take down large battleships.
Still, they can destroy masts and the on-deck cannons, plus more importantly distract the enemy's attention and make it hard to concentrate on what's in front of them.
