My Daoist Life Chapter 64: Hunting

Haha, all jokes aside, I appreciate how the storyline was unfolding so effortlesly, full of bittersweet moments but none of them feel forced, it's like all the confrontations and climaxes make sense, all the crazy elements are well balanced.

Yond the Ba Jiao Mountain was dotted with star shadows against a boundless white background. The heaven and earth seemed to have merged into one. The thick white snow was so thick that it was able to swallow shoes heels. We rushed over the land, leaving strings of footprints.

Snow added an extra layer of tranquility to everything. The figure of Red Autumn had disappeared in the expansive white world of blizzard, but its scream was still clearly audible.

Though Huang Shulang was puffing and gasping from the running, he was able to catch up with the team due to his regular workout.

"Alas, I can run no more. Master, I really can't." Huang Shulang muttered this sentence for numerous times, but his steps never stopped.

"If you really can't make it, don't come out with me in the future." I didn't bother to comfort this lazy fat boy.

Huang Shulang continued to run desperately with his face clouded.

He wished to be lazy, but he simply didn't dare to. Ma Jindong was running as fast as his feet could carry him. On the surface, Ma Jindong barely talked, but in fact, there wasn't one second that he didn't want to outperform Huang Shulang, who, though a slacker by nature, was more reluctant to lose to Ma Jindong.

When Huang Shulang went all out, his stamina and endurance was astonishing.

"Bark bark…"

From front sent the barks of Black Bean and his several madams. I guessed they had discovered the traces of the prey.

"Hurry, come on, otherwise, when you arrive, everything is long gone." I turned to yell back at Huang Shulang.

Li Lijuan practiced much later than Huang Shulang, and a girl was constitutionally weaker in physical strength, so after running for some time, she puffed heavily in an unsteady rhythm of breath.

"Li Lijuan, you can take a break when you feel exhausted. We'll come back to pick you up." I believed she could hold on no more and told her in a hurry.

"It's okay, I can do it." Li Lijuan was determined.

When we reached the foot of the Ba Jiao Mountain, Black Bean and Red Autumn had formed an encirclement that tightly besieged the prey from the sky and the ground. It was a fat grey hare. It hided under the brush, shaking and giving up its desire to run away because its way out had been completely blocked in every direction.

The bitter winter just began. After a winter's accumulation, a thick layer of fat was stored under the hare's thick fluffy hair. This was exactly the time when hares were fat and meaty. 

Bad luck for the hare. There was no way to survive our hunting team.

Red Autumn chirped to me, then soared to the sky, taking its families to search for more preys.

Black Bean drilled its way into the bushes, picked the hare by the mouth and put it to my feet. The hare was about to run when Black Bean slapped it down to the ground at once. Black Bean indeed had IQ so horribly high that it could see beforehand every intention of the hare.

Huang Shulang at once pounced over and picked it up. Yet, even Black Bean showed distain at the fat guy's behavior. It snorted and left with its three wives. Black Bean wasn't willing to lose to Red Autumn, since the hare was the latter's credit.

Red Autumn, with the advantage of flying and sharp vision, was able to see clearly in the air every animal walking or running on the ground. But Black Bean also had advantage of its own. Once in the forest, Red Autumn would perform less good than Black Bean who had an unmatchable nose.

"Huang Shulang, the hare is not dead yet; be careful it may run away." I said, a little worried.

"Master, please trust me. Don't worry, I can handle it." Huang Shulang pulled a long face and tightly tied the hare's legs together with a few straws he just pulled out.

Huang Shulang was really tired after the long run. He slumped down on the ground covered with snow. Luckily the snow was thick enough, sparing them the worry of getting dirty mud on the clothes. Ma Jindong and Li Lijuan were also breathing heavily. I stopped moving forward though I neither puffed nor felt tired.

"Sit down and have a rest. It's too dangerous to mount the mountain in such weather. Besides, we didn't have breakfast or make any preparation. Let's stop here and go back in a while." I stood in the snow.

Li Lijuan and Ma Jindong were really exhausted, so they also sat down like Huang Shulang.

It began to snow again and got bigger and bigger. We all put on our hats.

"How I wish my Tiger was as good as Black Bean!" Huang Shulang exclaimed with admiration.

"How I wish my Leopard was as good as Black Bean!" Ma Jindong also liked Black Bean very much.

"Master, if Black Bean has babies in the future, can I have one?" Li Lijuan's family didn't raise a dog, but she had a sensitive mind.

Um?

Ma Jindong and Huang Shulang momentarily turned to look at Li Lijuan with a look of why-didn't-I-think-of-this-idea.

"No problem. I also don't know how many babies Black Bean will have in the future. I guess I can't feed a whole lot even if I want to!" I smiled.

Huang Shulang's eyes lit up, "Master, if so, I also preserve one, no, two. I want two."

"Huang Shulang, why do you join us in this? Don't you have Black Tiger already?" I asked.

"Compared with Black Bean, Black Tiger is totally a cat. Black Bean's children must be amazing. I must have too!" Huang Shulang requested.

Ma Jindong cut in quickly, "I…I also want one…one, no, two…two."

Huang Shulang instantly jumped up and knocked Ma Jindong down into the snow.

"What…what are you doing? If you can have two, why can't I?" Ma Jindong rolled himself up and huffed at Huang Shulang.

"What're you doing? To disrespect me? Am I beating you because of dogs? You owe me one beating. If you stutter again, the number doubles." Huang Shulang said disdainfully.

"Huang Shulang, it's not proper to beat Ma Jindong under this excuse. From this day one, drop it. Don't always beat your younger brother, otherwise I'll punish you severely." I had grudged the fat guy beating Ma Jindong under this pretext.

"I won't always beat him, master. Look how he still keeps this bad habit. If you drop the ban now, I bet he'll relapse immediately." Huang Shulang had been using this panacelike excuse all the time. If it was cancelled suddenly, he would definitely feel at loss.

"It's okay if he can't change the habit. I got used to it. Maybe I'll feel strange if Ma Jindong suddenly stops stuttering." I decided to deprive Huang of this right. After all, if this situation lasted long, they would absolutely have a fierce fight. This kind of potential risk must be eliminated as soon as possible.

"Gre…great. I was beat up by this vicious man for many times. In the fu…future, if he beat me again, I'll kill him even if to die!" Ma Jindong felt relieved at once. This silent guy instantly turned active. The reason why he had barely talked was because he would be beaten up as long as he stuttered. Now the ban was dropped, Ma Jindong became all smiles in joy.

Chen Andong shook his head pitifully since Ma Jindong's disease couldn't be cured. But Chen Andong didn't want to restrain him any longer either. If Ma Jindong could realize it in the future, just let him slowly correct it on his own.

"Ah!"

Huang Shulang shrieked in horror.

Everyone glanced at him and saw him throwing the hare to the ground in fluster. The hare was already awake, kicking desperately to get rid of the straws around its legs. Huang Shulang had no idea of how to tie it up, so the hare succeeded only after a few kicking. Once the bondage lost, the hare momentarily fled away.

"Shit!"

We sighed at the same time.

It turned out that when the hare woke up, it tossed its head suddenly and pretended to be biting Huang Shulang, who immediately dropped it to the ground out of fear. And the draws didn't tie in a dead knot. After so long, it went loose so that the hare easily got off it.

"You, you…you, what's wrong with you?" Ma Jindong stuttered his complaint at Huang Shulang. Usually, Huang Shulang would give him a flying kick, but now with guiltiness, how would he dare to do that?

"Stop bickering. Go and chase it back!" I had set off for it. Luckily, we got it halfway. There was a spacious vacant lot. If the hare wanted to find a place to hide, it must reach the Ba Jiao Mountain first. A hare indeed ran fast, but snow everywhere weakened its advantage.
