Chapter 16. An unusual patient

In the past, Conrad became a hunter because he hoped he could find a cure for his comatose parents. This happened due to an attack by monsters when Conrad's parents, as well as his younger sister, were traveling from Dolsen, the city closest to the Frontier.

That day they were attacked by winged monsters, which, in the general classification of monsters, are called [Harpies]. These monsters crossed the border between the human and monster worlds undetected and then killed many innocent people, including Conrad's younger sister, Arias Reseda, who was only 15 years old.

Their parents miraculously survived; they were rescued by hunters who patrolled intercity roads to prevent such cases from occurring. But due to the fact that such incidents rarely happen, such hunters are very relaxed personalities, so then they were unable to react in time, which led to a large number of victims. Moreover, such jobs are sought after by people who do not want to fight monsters, but are element users and want to make good money.

---

- My name is Immanuel Persena, I am the commander of the Knights of the Frontier, I think you understand why I am here?

Conrad, an elderly doctor and a young nurse gathered in the chief physician's office, where an adult woman dressed in an officer's outfit was talking to them. Behind her stood two imposing men who wore the Knights' signature clothing for everyday use.

Persena looked at Conrad shrewdly with her unusual eyes, one of which was blue and the other golden.

- I think that the reason is the nonsense that frightened people told you.

Conrad was calm, he looked intently into the woman's eyes, without looking away.

- Stop talking nonsense, you broke Kairos's arm and almost killed me!

The nurse sitting opposite Conrad shouted angrily at the warrior.

- Alice, you are behaving inappropriately.

The elderly doctor looked edifyingly at his ward.

- But Mr. Lenn, I'm telling the truth, this psycho could have killed everyone in the hospital.

Alice complained to her boss, who just sighed deeply.

- Dear Mrs. Persena, I am afraid that everything that was previously reported to you is an incorrect perception of the situation that occurred.

- Mister Lenn!

The nurse interrupted the elderly doctor, but instantly became silent when he looked at her with a serious look.

- I was informed that a terrorist who uses the element of wind has appeared in the hospital. According to the applicants, he wanted to kill them all.

Persena turned her gaze to old Lenn.

Conrad looked around at the Knights in the room, and the young nurse looked at him angrily, waiting for a chance to expose the warrior as a criminal.

- I assure you, this is complete nonsense. This young man, mistakenly believed to be a terrorist...

- Mister Lenn!

The nurse could not contain her anger and jumped out of her chair.

- Stop shielding this freak.

- Alice, do you understand that you are being rude to your superiors?

The old man's tone became much more serious.

- Do you understand that you are trying to shield an asshole who should rot in prison!

- Enough.

Even though Persena's voice was calm, it scared the young nurse.

- Trevor, take the girl out the door.

The Knight Commander gave an order to one of her subordinates.

- You can't, I'm a victim!

- Please, do not resist, later I will definitely listen to everything you say about the situation that happened, but in private, so that no one bothers you.

- Fine.

The girl smiled joyfully and allowed the Knight to lead her out of the room. When the door closed and the Knight returned to his original place, Persena's voice dispelled the silence:

- You can continue, Mr. Lenn.

- Thank you. So, this person is our patient, he was admitted to us two days ago with numerous injuries, but, as you can see, now his body is in perfect order.

The old man turned his gaze to Conrad.

- Which, unfortunately, cannot be said about his consciousness, since this man suffers from partial memory loss. I think when he woke up, my patient went into shock and believed he was still on a monster raid, so he used the power of the element in a public place.

Persena listened carefully to the elderly doctor.

- As for his rapid recovery, I think that this young man went through an elemental awakening, which could also cause a shock in his mind. In other words, what happened is a manifestation of post-traumatic syndrome and cannot be regarded as some kind of crime.

- I heard you, and now I would like to listen to you, Mr. Conrad. What caused you to use elemental power in civilian territory, break a hunter's arm, and attack an ordinary person?

The woman looked piercingly at Conrad.

- Apparently, I went back in time twenty years ago, so I didn't quite understand where I was and what was happening. I acted according to the situation, it was self-defense.

All the people in the room opened their eyes wide; they did not expect to hear such a thing.

*Ahem*

The elderly doctor coughed.

- As you can see, my patient needs further treatment.

- A hunter with mental disabilities poses a serious danger to society.

Persena frowned.

- I'm fine. I need to kill the monsters as quickly as possible, before the catastrophe that I experienced repeats itself.

Everyone was shocked by Conrad's words, and believed that everything was definitely not all right with him.

- I will assign an observer to your patient, who will not only contact me if such an incident occurs again, but will also prevent possible damage.

- Then I will accompany Mr. Conrad to his room.

Lenn nervously wiped the sweat from his forehead.

- Trevor, you heard everything, right? From this day forward you will watch this hunter.

- Yes ma'am!

Persena and Lenn stood up from their chairs.

- In 3 days, Omirovana will be destroyed by monsters whose strength is unimaginable.

- I heard you, but I don't want to hear such nonsense anymore, so I ask you to stop and follow the doctor if you don't want to face serious consequences.

- I urgently need equipment, then I can prevent a disaster.

Conrad's voice was calm.

- Mr. Conrad, before coming here, I was told all the known information about you. You are a member of the [Hopelessness] guild as a «Delta» rank hunter. But I feel very well that your strength is undoubtedly at the «Alpha» rank level. Apparently, you really went through the procedure of awakening the element, as Mr. Lenn said. This may have caused you some shock, so you'd better get some tests done and then we can get back to this conversation.

Persena walked towards the exit with a calm expression on her face.

Despite the fact that humanity was in dire need of strong hunters, she could not pin any hopes on a person who, in her opinion, was behaving in an extremely strange manner.

The knight commander left with one of her subordinates. The elderly doctor stood in the doorway, looking expectantly at Conrad.

Trevor walked up to Conrad and put his hand on his shoulder.

- Let's not complicate everything and calmly listen to our commander.

There was a threat in the Knight's voice.

Conrad just took a deep breath.

---

- Commander, with all due respect, will Trevor, if something happens, be able to cope with the supposed "Alpha" rank?

The knight followed Persena through the busy crowd of people straight to the exit of the hospital.

- Don't worry, I don't think this person will decide to do something as stupid as attacking a knight on duty.

- What about that girl? You seemed to say that you were going to listen to her separately.

- There is no need for this, I am aware of her family and their past, so I can clearly see what she is trying to achieve.

As Persena and her guard exited the building, they heard the sound of glass breaking from above, and then Trevor fell right in front of them. He lay unconscious.

Conrad, who jumped out of the office window, calmly landed next to him.

- And how to understand this?

Persena's voice became angry, she reached for the sword that hung on her belt. The knight has already taken out his weapon.

- In three days the one I must kill will appear. And I won't let you interfere with me.

Despite the blank look, Conrad was clearly irritated by what was happening.
