Chapter 0: Death
Kurai sighed. She'd finished her finals for college.
Now she didn't have to worry about exams and could relax for the summer...at least she hoped. Suddenly, her phone rang, and she paled as she looked at the caller ID. So much for relaxing.
She picked up, slightly trembling. The last time she talked to him...it didn't go well.
"Hello?" she asked.
"Kurai? Is..that you?" asked her father's drunken voice.
Kurai stopped at the sidewalk, her voice fearful as she said, "Yes, Father."
"You...passed the finals?" he mumbled, barely making out the words.
"Yes..." she said, slightly gulping.
She heard a lot of background noise, and then her father drinking down a cup. She heard as he placed his glass down with a THUMP! and then her father said, "Quit."
Did she hear him correctly?
"Quit?" she repeated.
"I want to quit!" he said angrily. "Your college cost so much money...money we can be using for more useful things!"
"Like your drinks?" she said, growing angry. How could he do this to her?
"DON'T QUESTION ME!" he roared in the phone.
Kurai flinched at the sound of her father's voice and started walking across the sidewalk.
"I've done so much to get to college!" she protested. "If...if I can graduate and get a good job, we'll have more money!"
"I don't care," snarled her father, rage seeping in his drunken voice.
She stopped for a moment, looking at her phone. Why did he always ruin her dreams and hopes? It was like his job to do so.
"You don't care?" she asked slowly, knowing that she couldn't talk back...but she always tried. She started walking again.
"I need you at home to work," came her father's slurred voice. "I barely have enough money!"
Kurai scoffed under her breath...
...not paying attention to the road...
...until the truck hit her.
She fell, her phone flying out of her hand, smashing into the sidewalk. Blood seeped from her head and trickled down, her thoughts slowing down. All she felt was pain...just pain. It hurt like hell.
Am I going to die? she thought.
Her eyes fluttered, and then her eyes shut.
Ten and a half minutes later, when the ambulance found her, they checked her heart.
It wasn't beating anymore.
She was dead.
